2 2 Basic Information Arnstadt Bundled Expertise for Solar Energy Arnstadt (Thuringia), Germany, is the site of Bosch Solar Energy s center of excellence and the central hub for crystalline photovoltaics: the next generations of products and manufacturing processes will be developed here. For about 530 million euros a new research and development center including nearly one hundred developers, a new training center for technology and commercial enterprises, as well as a headquarters were created adjacent to the production facilities for the entire value added chain from crystal growing to wafers, solar cells and modules. 3 On-Site Production 3 Bosch Solar Energy as an Integrated Manufacturer Bosch Solar Energy s core business is crystalline photovoltaics. As an integrated manufacturer Bosch covers all the relevant processing steps: from the crystal to the ingot, the wafer, the cell, the module, and the assemblymounting system. Since 2009, on behalf of private and institutional investors around the world, Bosch Solar Energy has built turnkey solar power plants mounted on roofs, freestanding, or integrated into facades. Thus, the Arnstadt site is a site for the future as much as anything else. The number of apprentices has been steadily rising since the emergence of the technical and commercial training center. From industrial or process engineering to commercial education or dual degree programs the scope of the jobs requiring training is enormous. In order to achieve defined goals and to be adequately prepared for the future, a qualified and highly motivated training team is available. 6 6 Sustainability and Security A Site for Sustainability Research and development at Bosch Solar Energy are aligned with a sustainable energy and environmental policy. Sustainability also influences everyday work at the Arnstadt site. This concept includes not just the manufactured product but also the processing of materials right up to the packaging. The local photovoltaic installation on site produces more than a million kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year enough to satisfy the needs of the headquarters, the staff cafeteria and the training center. Employees showers are heated with solar energy, while the waste heat from production is used to heat the buildings. The manufacturing processes are continuously monitored and optimized and in this way contribute to the reduction of emissions.
