4 4 Before You Arrive : Visa and Travel Information ENJOY A MULTI-CAMPUS EXPERIENCE The Culinary Arts Academy Switzerland has two locations: in downtown Lucerne, a world-renowned tourism destination in central Switzerland; and in Le Bouveret on the shores of Lake Geneva. In both Lucerne and Le Bouveret, the Culinary Arts Academy is located within the campus of Cesar Ritz Colleges, one of the world s leading hospitality management schools. VISA APPLICATION It is important to apply for a student visa at least 8-12 weeks before students begin their courses, at the respective Swiss Embassy/Consulate. To apply for a student visa, the following enclosures are required : 1. 3x visa application form, duly completed, dated and signed (available at the local Swiss Embassy/Consulate) /bfm/en/home/themen/einreise/ visumantragsformular.html 2. 4 recent passport-size photos in colour (must adhere to Schengen requirements) 3. Valid passport 4. School confirmation letter 5. Proof of financial resources (bank statement of the applicant or applicant s parents) 6. Diploma/certificates of completed studies with an official translation 7. English certification (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, etc.) 8. Résumé (curriculum vitae) 9. Motivation letter and study plan 10. Written confirmation that the applicant will leave Switzerland after the requested stay Visa requirements vary for each country so students should check with the Swiss Embassy/ Consulate in their country before applying. For more information : Upon students arrival to Switzerland, the school will obtain necessary permits for study and work placement. PRE-DEPARTURE SESSIONS Organised by the local representative in many countries for students to meet each other and to receive a briefing on how to prepare for their stay in Switzerland. ARRIVAL TIME/DATES 9am Check-in weekend begins at 1pm on the Friday of the induction weekend. From this time, students will be able to move into their accommodation and have their meals at the school. Students should not arrive at school before this time. If it is unavoidable for students to arrive before Friday, they will be required to arrange their own accommodation. TRANSFER FROM GENEVA AIRPORT For students arriving at Geneva airport, the school can arrange a transfer. For more information students should contact their local representative or the admissions office. For the train schedule and prices, please check the website : WELCOME DESK AT GENEVA AIRPORT Over the induction weekend, a Swiss Education Group welcome desk operates at Geneva airport (Friday 8 am until Sunday night 10:30 pm). Located immediately after the custom clearance, the desk is marked with the Swiss Education Group logo : Senior students /and or staff will welcome students at the desk, help with purchasing their train tickets and ensure that they take the correct train to Le Bouveret. It takes approximately two hours to Le Bouveret by train. TRANSFER FROM ZURICH AIRPORT Zurich airport has its own railway station in Basement 2 of Terminal B. It takes approximately one hour to Lucerne and 4 hours to Le Bouveret so for students going to Le Bouveret Campus, we recommend that they book their flight through to Geneva even though they may stop over in Zurich. Train tickets can be purchased at the ticket counter in Basement 1 or the ticket machine before boarding the train and all major credit cards are accepted. For the train schedule and price, please check the following website : Please note that transfers are not organised from Zurich airport. Lucerne students should arrive at the Zurich airport and inform us of their arrival details (arrival date, time, flight number and airline) well upon confirmation to administration-lucerne@ ritz.edu Our welcome team at Zurich airport will be happy to greet students and assist them with purchasing their train ticket and in taking the correct train to Lucerne. Students will be accompanied from Lucerne train station to the Lucerne campus. ARRIVAL BY CAR Students arriving by car should check their route on entering the school s address. INDUCTION WEEKEND During the induction weekend, students will be involved in an orientation programme. This gives an introduction to the programmes and lifestyle at school. A series of checkpoints are set up to help students get acquainted with the school. Uniform and class schedules will also be distributed during this time. 7 What to bring 7 LE BOUVERET AND LUCERNE CAMPUS Uniforms are to be worn by all students from Monday to Friday. The professional dress code applies from Monday through Friday starting at breakfast until after dinner, as well as during evening classes and events in all public areas (including but not limited to classrooms, office floors, reception areas and restaurants). FEMALE STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE : Kitchen uniforms 1 pair of black kitchen safety shoes 1 school blazer 1 skirt (knee length) or 1 pair of trousers 1 scarf MALE STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE : Kitchen uniforms 1 pair of black kitchen safety shoes 1 school blazer 1 pair of trousers 1 tie Please note that all culinary students will receive a professional knife set, and pastry students will receive a pastry set. TO COMPLETE THE SCHOOL UNIFORM, ALL FEMALE STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO BRING : A set of white shirts to wear underneath the kitchen jacket 6 white blouses with collar long sleeved, cotton, classic style 1 pair of black business shoes with heel (no loafers, slippers etc.) 1 grey or black wool sweater/pullover (to wear under the school blazer) 6 pairs of tights/stockings skin coloured, or gray/black transparent 2 black skirts or trousers (service uniform) TO COMPLETE THE SCHOOL UNIFORM, ALL MALE STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO BRING : A set of 6 white shirts to wear underneath the kitchen jacket 6 white shirts long sleeved, cotton, classic style 1 pair of black business shoes 1 grey or black wool sweater/pullover (to wear under the school blazer) 6 pairs of black socks 2 pairs of black trousers (service uniform) Additional blazers, skirts, trousers, scarves and ties can be purchased from the housekeeping department. 8 8 What to bring RESTAURANT UNIFORM Professional uniform for the restaurant practical classes are loaned to students during the academic term. ADDITIONAL CLOTHING Students should bring a business suit (to be worn when their uniform is being cleaned ; a uniform dispensation is required from the reception). FOR WINTER WEATHER : Thick padded jacket or overcoat Sweaters Gloves and scarves Sturdy waterproof shoes Warm hat FOR SPECIAL EVENTS : A traditional costume from students home countries could prove useful for special events. SMART CASUAL DRESS When not in school uniform, students must bear in mind that as a student of a hotel management school, it is important that the image projected is professional. During the welcome weekend, students lecturers will advise on dress codes. These comments should be taken as sound advice and respected accordingly. Students must adhere to the appropriate outlined standards during the academic term and during their internship. NAME TAG Students will receive a nametag and a school pin on arrival. These must be worn during class hours and while on professional excursions (they must both be worn horizontally on the left side of students jackets). LAPTOP Although the school provides a modern IT resource centre, all students are encouraged to bring a laptop. Laptops must be formatted to connect to the school network. This will be organised by the IT helpdesk upon arrival. It is essential that students computers run on an English operating system (Windows or Mac). 9 What to bring 9 INTERNATIONAL POWER ADAPTOR Below is a picture of a Swiss power socket. SPENDING MONEY Students will require pocket money in order to purchase toiletries, postage, phone calls and also to participate in leisure activities outside of school hours. The amount depends on the leisure activities undertaken, however a suggested minimum amount is CHF per week. An adaptor may be required to plug in electrical devices, these are available to purchase at most airports. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS Alarm clock Calculator Dictionary Toiletries (shampoo, soap etc) Stationary supplies (pens, paper etc) Backpack/book bag Travellers money belt Umbrella and raincoat Small sewing kit Photocopies of important documents (eg passport, previous educational qualifications and work experience) 4 passport-size photos in colour ITEMS FORBIDDEN ON ALL CAMPUSES Electrical appliances such as irons, heating elements, rice cookers, toasters, cooking appliances etc. (Hair dryers and sound systems are permitted. 1 kettle per room will be provided by the school). This is a very important fire prevention rule. Weapons and substitutes (pocket knives) are strictly forbidden. Only medicines issued on prescription by a registered doctor may be brought to school. 11 César Ritz Colleges Le Bouveret Campus 11 GENERAL INFORMATION Le Bouveret is a charismatic French-speaking town nestled on the shores of Lake Geneva, just a five-minute drive to neighbouring France. Known for its beautiful beach and many outdoor attractions, Le Bouveret is a popular summer resort. Conveniently located near the vibrant towns of Montreux and Lausanne, the nearest airport is Geneva International Airport. Located in a magnificent former hotel dating back to the early 1900s, the Culinary Arts Academy campus is just minutes away from the town centre and the lake. The new campus extension, finished in 2012, provides 100 fully equipped single superior deluxe rooms with state-of-the-art kitchen facilities in collaboration with the Cesar Ritz Colleges Switzerland. STUDY FACILITIES CAMPUS The entire campus is set in a magnificent 26,000 m 2 lakeside location and offers a tranquil and secure study environment. The main building holds classrooms, accommodation, The Ritz Lounge and the academic and operations offices. TRAINING RESTAURANT Students apply food and beverage theory they have learned and when performing service skills at the Cesar Ritz Fine Dining, a traditional fine-dining restaurant, serving an à la carte menu for lunch and dinner. LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE A full-time librarian is on hand, in the wellstocked library, to assist with students questions. Students also have access to a wide range of online catalogues and articles. 12 12 César Ritz Colleges Le Bouveret Campus RECREATIONAL FACILITIES RESTAURANTS Students have the choice to eat in any of the restaurants available on campus : The Cesar Ritz Fine Dining or The Lakeview Restaurant (international buffet). All meals in these restaurants are included in the fees. THE RITZ LOUNGE Renovated in 2013, the students can purchase a coffee, snacks or warm dishes from early morning until late in the evening. THE UNDERGROUND The students bar and nightclub, open four evenings per week, until late on weekends. GYM The gym provides a selection of weight machines, as well as aerobic training facilities. Located in the extension, it is the perfect place for students to expand their energy! Before using the fitness facilities, students must ensure that they are fully informed about the specifics of each machine and that they adhere to general and safety guidelines when using equipment to avoid any injury or misuse of the facilities. ACCOMMODATION All student accommodation is designed to offer students the comfort and privacy needed for study or to simply relax. Bedrooms are spacious, modern and comfortable ; all are non-smoking. Rooms are located both in the main school building overlooking the lake and in the adjacent Bellevue building set among the trees. All students must chose a room category before they enroll. If a key is lost or damaged, a replacement can be obtained from the reception for CHF Keys must be returned at the end of each term. INTERNET ACCESS A wireless connection is present throughout all school buildings for student use. PRINTERS Students receive a rechargeable print-card with credits at the start of each term the printers/ photocopiers, located around the campus. LAUNDRY ROOM A fully equipped student laundry room is available with washers, dryers and ironing boards. These facilities are card-operated. Cards are available to purchase from the reception at CHF 32 each. Each card lasts for approximately 5-6 washes. SCHOOL All students will be provided with a school address through which they will receive all school-related information. Students are required to check their on a regular basis in order to keep up to date with the school s operations. MAIL Incoming student mail will be distributed daily to students pigeonholes (located at the reception). Some of the facilities available include pools, water slides, wellness areas, a sauna, and steam bath to name a few. SWISS VAPEUR PARC This unique park situated on the shores of Lake Geneva displays miniature replicas from the rich heritage of Switzerland : castles, churches, bridges, tunnels and other viaducts. Stroll through the park or jump onboard the miniature train and experience the magnificent Swiss outdoors. PUBLIC TRANSPORT PUBLIC BUSES Public buses run between Le Bouveret and Aigle. Situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Lucerne, the city offers the perfect combination of tradition and modernity. STUDY FACILITIES CAMPUS The Culinary Arts Academy campus is located in the heart of the city of Lucerne, in the impressive former Union hotel that was built in the 1900s and underwent major renovations in 2012, to welcome students in modern facilities. Known for its culture and modern convention centre, Lucerne has a large selection of shops, cinemas, museums, theatres, restaurants, bars and clubs for students to enjoy. TRAINING RESTAURANT Students apply food and beverage theory when applying service skills at the Cesar Ritz Fine Dining in the Grand Hall, a traditional fine-dining restaurant serving from an à la carte menu for lunch and dinner. Coffee Beans is only open in the evenings for special occasions including Halloween and karaoke night. VENDING MACHINES Cold drinks and snacks are available in vending machines located on campus. GYM A number of membership cards for the local gym are available at the Front Desk of the school, which can be borrowed by students (upon availability). This service is free of charge, however the cards must be returned within three hours. Students are required to pay a one-time fee of CHF 50 for an introduction course at the gym, situated approximately 20 minutes walking distance or 7 minutes by bus. ACCOMMODATION The Lucerne campus offers a range of different room categories right in the heart of the city centre. All accommodation is modern, comfortable and spacious to enable students to feel at home. Rooms are located in the main campus building and also the Limelight building next door ; all are non-smoking. The top floor rooms, equipped with balconies allow a superb view over the city and the magnificent Lake Lucerne. 19 César Ritz Colleges Lucerne 19 ACTIVITIES IN LUCERNE CHAPEL BRIDGE Built in the first half of the 14th century, this is one of the most famous landmarks of the city of Lucerne and is a must see for all visitors. KKL LUZERN This Convention and Cultural Center is hosted in an iconic Jean Nouvel building and is home to a concert hall, an auditorium and various food and beverage outlets. Various types of events and concerts are held there throughout the year, ranging from classical music to modern pop music. EXCURSIONS AROUND LUCERNE Lucerne is nestled in the picturesque Lake Lucerne area where there are numerous boat cruise opportunities as well as trips and excursions to some of Switzerland s most famous mountain peaks. The Pilatus, the Rigi, the Engelberg-Titlis area or the Stanserhorn all offer breath taking views and panorama of Central Switzerland. SPORT AND LEISURE For students interested in sports there is a multitude of activities available : mountain biking, golf, ice-skating and tennis just to name a few. In the summer months the magnificent Lake Lucerne is home to many water sports, which include : dragon boat racing, canoeing, kayaking, wakeboarding and windsurfing. Students also have access to a fully equipped sports hall, located just two minutes away from the campus, for team sports, that can be used twice a week. For the winter months the campus is located within a onehour drive from many ski resorts situated in the Swiss Alps, for students to enjoy during their free time. A Sports and Leisure Coordinator is at the disposal of students and will organize weekly activities. (Some activities are at students own expenses, with others free of charge). HOTELS IN LUCERNE Due to space limitations, the school is unable to provide accommodation for visitors. However, the school has special rates with hotels in Lucerne. 21 Academic Services 21 ACADEMIC OFFICE Assists students with any administrative issues related to academics : study attestations, records of achievement, diplomas, class schedules, module exemptions etc. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE Available for questions regarding students visas, resident permits, invoices and other enrolment information. INTERNSHIP OFFICE Places every Bachelor, Postgraduate and direct entry students for professional training in Switzerland or abroad. They also assist older students with any internship questions. COMPUTER ROOM The computer room is accessible to students outside of class hours. MODULE EXEMPTION AND PROCEDURES Students may be exempt from carrying out a module(s) that they hold thorough knowledge or qualifications in. Exemption requests must be made during the first two weeks of term. The appropriate form, available from the academic office, must be submitted to the program manager in the first week of the academic term, accompanied by supporting documents (transcripts, course descriptions and learning objectives). 23 Your Life on Campus 23 HOLIDAY PERIODS Culinary Arts Academy Switzerland is able to accommodate students during term breaks free of charge. Accommodation can be provided in either one of The Swiss Education Group campuses (students may therefore be required to move campus for this duration). HOUSEKEEPING SERVICES Linen and towels are provided for students and rooms are cleaned once per week by the housekeeping team. Students are required to keep their room clean and tidy at all times. MEALS Full board is provided 7 days a week, 3 meals on weekdays and 2 meals (brunch and dinner) at weekends. A range of options is offered at all meal times with vegetarian and non-pork/beef menus available. Students requiring a special diet due to medical reasons should inform the student counselor upon their arrival at school. A medical certificate will be required. For students who observe Ramadan, special arrangements for meals can be arranged upon request. STUDENT COUNSELOR The student counselor is available for students who wish to discuss health issues or social problems. Any medical problems that may prevent students from attending class will need to be reported immediately to the student counselor and the Front Desk. Failure to inform the counselor may result in unexcused absences from class. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES At Culinary Arts Academy, learning continues beyond the classroom walls. There are excellent opportunities to participate in social and sporting activities throughout Switzerland and Europe. Many of these activities are organised by the Student Ambassador Forum and Sports and Leisure Coordinator. STUDENT AMBASSADOR FORUM The aim of the Student Ambassador Forum is to represent the entire student body. The committee strives to offer students a diverse, unique and unforgettable college experience by : Developing the student activities calendar every term Organising extracurricular activities Helping students solve communal and personal problems Promoting a positive, tolerant and multicultural school environment SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Social activities provide students with the opportunity to get to know their fellow students away from the campus environment and can often help develop professional knowledge. Some of these are open to the public. GRADUATION CEREMONY Graduation takes place in Brig each March and September. Note : these events are subject to change. 26 26 Other Facilities and Useful Information RECEPTION The reception staff is available to students from Monday to Friday. Outside of opening hours, a residence supervisor is on call. LUGGAGE ROOM During students internship they will have the opportunity to store one piece of luggage or one standard box in the school s storage room for a maximum period of six months. All items must be clearly labeled and locked or sealed. This service is free of charge and the school will not be held responsible for any damages or loss of possessions. HEALTH CARE AND MEDICAL INSURANCE The school provides students with health care coverage (including the daily cost of hospitalization in a shared room) and for corporal accident both on and off school premises in Switzerland and abroad. In case of accident or illness, students should first contact the reception or the student counselor who will organise further action. Only medicines provided by doctors are covered and dental care is not included in the coverage. All medical bills should be forwarded to the schools health insurance coordinator and must not be paid by the student. MEDICATION Some standard medicines are available at the student counselor s office or the front desk. REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT This deposit is a security deposit from which the following can be deducted : Damages caused directly by a student in his/her room and/ or the school premises Health insurance during students internship Unpaid school fees under CHF The refundable deposit is paid once in full and in the following terms the student will pay what has been used during the terms preceeding. The refundable deposit will be refunded six months after the end of the last academic term. SAFETY AND SECURITY ON CAMPUS Both Culinary Arts Academy buildings are equipped with camera surveillance. A fire drill will be carried out at the beginning of each term. For safety reasons, students must familiarise themselves with emergency procedures and fire escape routes. SMOKING AREAS For safety reasons, smoking is strictly prohibited except in designated areas. VISITORS Visitors are welcome on campus during certain hours. All visitors must report to the reception upon arrival and will be provided with a visitor badge. 28 28 Switzerland and General Information There are a vast range of activities and destinations for students to enjoy during their time in Switzerland and students are encouraged to explore as much as possible during their stay. SWISS REGIONS LAUSANNE Attractions include the Olympic museum, the Quai d Ouchy promenade and the old town. GENEVA Visit the St-Pierre Cathedral and its ancient vaults, the old town and one of the most popular attractions, the Jet d eau. An ideal destination for a shopping trip on a Saturday! BERN Switzerland s capital city has a very attractive old town with lots of style! Highly recommended for an impressive Saturday excursion. ZURICH Zurich is often referred to as the economic capital of Switzerland, it is a vibrant city, with a lot to offer ; home to a variety of trendy bars and restaurants, also offering great nightlife. POPULATION AND LANGUAGE Switzerland has a population of 8.1 million people. There are four native languages spoken and many people also have a good English level. SWISS PEOPLE AND SWISS CULTURE Switzerland s independence and neutrality have long played a role in the country s culture. In more recent history, Switzerland has opened up to its European neighbours and is now an active member of the United Nations. Switzerland is active in many international organisations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality. HISTORY Switzerland s history has been greatly influenced by its geography, which divides the country into small regions. These regions were independent until 1848 when the country became a confederation. Since this time the number of regions joining the confederation has grown to a total of 26 that now make up the country of Switzerland. CLIMATE Generally speaking, spring is wet and cool, summer is warm and dry with maximum temperatures up to 35 C. Fall is usually dry, but cool. Winter is cold and dry and the temperature may drop below 0 C, especially at night. The Alps usually get a lot of snow, but even at lower elevations, it is not unusual to get a snowfall. 29 Switzerland and General Information 29 AIRPORTS Geneva airport is the closest international airport to Le Bouveret campus (approximately two hours by car or train). There are daily flights between Geneva, most European capitals and some American and Middle Eastern cities. Zurich airport is the closest international airport to the Lucerne campus (about one hour by train). There are daily flights between Zurich and numerous international cities worldwide. GETTING AROUND The easiest and most affordable means of travel in Switzerland is by train. A half-fare card (demi-tarif) can be obtained at any train station and allows travel on trains at 50% of the normal fare. This card also allows for reductions on tram tickets throughout Switzerland. Combined with the half-fare card, students can also buy the Voie 7 pass allowing free to travel in second from 7pm onwards. Students must be between years old to be eligible for this pass. For more info, please visit CURRENCY The local currency is the Swiss franc. The franc notes come in CHF 10.-, 20.-, 50.-, 100.-, and 1,000.- denominations. BANKS Banks are opened from Monday to Friday from 8 am until 5 pm depending on the branch. Foreign currency and traveller s checks can be exchanged in most branches. TELEPHONE Phone cards are available in Switzerland and can be bought from any post office or news agency. For mobile phone subscriptions, Swiss Education Group has partnered with Sunrise and offers all students a special mobile phone contract at a very attractive rate. BUSINESS AND SHOPPING HOURS Most offices are open between 8 am and 5 pm (Monday to Friday) while retail shops open from 9 am until 6.30 pm (Monday to Friday) and 8 am until 5 pm on Saturdays. RELIGIOUS SERVICES The predominant religions in Switzerland are Catholicism and Protestantism. Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish and Anglican communities are also established in most major cities of Switzerland. Some services are held in English; more information can be found from the local tourist information centre.
