1 Cycling Information Booklet 2014 Welcome to Cycling, please use this handbook to learn about how the cycling programme operates at St Cuthbert's College. It will be updated during the year as more dates and information become available. Enjoy the season! Information Presentation: An Information Presentation for the cycling squad will be held on Wednesday 26 th February starting at 3.45pm in the Middle School Centre. We encourage all parents whose daughters are involved in the Cycling programme to attend. The presentation will outline the logistics of the programme, give parents and students the opportunity to meet the coaching team, other families and ask any questions regarding the programme, including camps, competitions and training programme. The Role of the Coaches We are lucky to have the strong coaching programme of Susy Pryde and Chris Drake working alongside us to create a programme that is supporting the development of the cycling squad. Their coaching is vital to the success of the St Cuthbert s Cycling Programme. The role of the coach is to ensure that the players and team have the appropriate skills and knowledge to take the road or track to compete to the best of their ability whether they are working as a team or as an individual. A Coach is expected to: Plan and facilitate a weekly training session appropriate to the needs of the squad throughout the season. Attend races and competitions, coordinate the warm up, speak to teams and individuals about strategies and tactics depending on the conditions. Create a positive learning environment for the whole squad Work closely with the Sports Department to communicate important information Liaise with parents to aid the development of the cyclist. Be organised, reliable, approachable and decisive.

2 Training Days: Weekly training session run from 3.30pm on a Tuesday and 6am Thursday mornings. Sunday trainings will run from 8.30am. Race training runs from the Under ground car park. Training session may meet at alternative locations to best meet the needs of the riders at a specific point in the season. All trainings are ed at the start of the week. Times and days are subject to change to ensure students stay refreshed. Year 7/8 riders will only train once a week and on the weekend. All families within the cycling community are expected to support with training whether that be as a parent rider or a safety car driver. The safety of our cyclist is paramount to the College and the Coaching team. If at any point they feel the group is unsafe they will stop. For all training sessions students need to ensure they have lights fitted and working, a floro vest top that is hi vis and contains reflective strips, helmet, phone, drink and food. Cycling Fee: The cycling fee for this academic year will be $140. This fee will cover all Auckland Time Trial competition entries, equipment, coaching expenses and the sports levy. All Camps, extra trainings outside of the season or prescribed school training, Road Race, North Island and National entry and accommodation charges will be estimated and charged on entry. All fees will be charged to your St Cuthbert s Account. ASSC Time Trial Series The ASSC Time Trial Series take place from Pavillion Drive in Mangere. We are lucky enough to have the use of a warehouse about 2km from the start line to warm up in. This venue is open from 6.30am and arrival times will depend on race start times. All students will need to arrive 75 mins prior to their race start. All students are responsible for the transportation of their own equipment, and will require a wind trainer, bike, shoes, skin suit and jacket, food and a warm change of clothes. Teams for the time trials will be selected by the Coaching team. Race times will be subject to change for each race. Draft times will be issued at the start of each race week. Final times will be issued by the Friday morning. Senior Under 20 years of age on 31 st December in year of competition Junior Under 16 years of age on 31 st December in year of competition Year 7/8 students race as juniors until the finals weekend. On the finals weekend the Year 7/8 students race as year 7/8. NISS Cycling Championships This event takes place around Cambridge High School. Families will travel on Friday evening or Saturday morning to the High School. The team are based out of Cambridge High School, with warm ups and meeting areas being in a hired class room. Day one consists of a Team Time Trial. Start times will be confirmed nearer the time and teams will need to arrive a minimum of 75 minutes before the race start. Day two consists of a Road Race. Start times will be confirmed nearer the time. Start times will be in age groups. 4 Under 20 as of the 31 st December in year of competing NISS Track Cycling Championships This event is new for 2014 please look back here for further information as it is released. NZSS Individual Cycling Nationals This is a two day event, with 3 races Saturday 6 th September Individual Time Trial and Hill Climb. The individual Time Trials take place in the early morning in Panmure followed by the Hill Climb up Mount Wellington. Sunday 7 th September Criterium takes place in East Tamaki All arrival times to each venues and event are depending the race start times which are done via age groups. Under 14 as of the 31 st December in year of competing Under 15 as of the 31 st December in year of competing Under 16 as of the 31 st December in year of competing Under 17 as of the 31 st December in year of competing Under 20 as of the 31 st December in year of competing NZSS Cycling Nationals Palmerston North This is a three day event, plus a practice day. Thursday 25 th September Travel to Palmerston North short ride to get the legs moving around the Road Race course. Friday 26 th September Team Time Trial Practice on the time trial course. Saturday 27 th September Team Time Trial Race day Races commence at approximately 10am, meet times will depend on age. Sunday 28 th September Road Race Races commence at approximately 10am, meet times will depend on age. Monday 29 th September Individual Points Race Races commence at approximately 9am, meet times will depend on age. All Prize Giving s will take place at the end of each day. This event is the last school event of the season and the team will be having a meal out together on the Sunday night to celebrate the year. Year 7/8 in year of competing

5 Junior Under 16 in year of competing Senior Under 20 in year of competing Behaviour and Attendance: To ensure everyone involved in a team gets the most out of the season it is essential that cyclist attend training and competitions. Where possible please ensure that your daughter is able to attend training sessions and competitions particularly those events that are team based. The Coach and Manager/Sports Coordinator must be notified if a player is unable to attend a training and team competitions to ensure they are able to plan the session and teams for that event accordingly. Cyclists and the teams will learn the most at training if all are present and able to train as a complete unit It is essential that players also arrive at the time specified by the Coach. The behaviour that is expected at trainings is the same of which is required in a classroom. Training is for learning and all cyclist need to respect not only the coach but the other team members that are keen to listen and progress their skills. Please discuss these values with your daughter prior to attending training. Transport: Students will need to make their own way to all Auckland Events; all other arrangements for events will be based on family and student requirements. Uniform Uniforms are to be purchased before the competition starts from Black Watch House. All orders need to be with Black Watch House by Monday 31 st March to ensure delivery by the first team time trial. Girls should always race in the St Cuthbert s cycling skin suit. The cycling jacket is an optional extra. This is a light weight cycling jacket. All students are expected to wear the following items for all prize giving s, arrival and departure. Sports teams are expected to wear any of the following College Sportswear over the top of their playing uniform to protect from the elements. Green tracksuit Cycling Jacket Black wet weather Sports Jacket Blue Polar Fleece Any other gear (eg puffa jackets, non-regulation polar fleeces, Ugg boots) are not appropriate for school sports teams and we respectfully request that players do not come dressed in such items.

6 Equipment All students are expected to supply their own equipment, Bike, safety gear (including helmet, lights and floro jackets), shoes, training cycling clothing, wind trainer. The school does have a small amount of bikes and wind trainers that can be issued on request at a charge of approximately $100 per term for the bikes and $30 per term for the wind trainers. Bikes and trainers are issued on a term by term basis. These items are a tool to encouraging students to try the sport. Once the student has decided if she would like to stay with the sport the student will need to provide their own equipment.
