Online registration will be available at early in NURSE AIDE TRAINING This 75-hour class is designed to meet the training requirements of the 1987 OBRA for aides working in nursing facilities. It prepares the student to provide safe, effective care of the resident by acquiring a basic level of knowledge and skill. It is composed of 45 hours classroom instruction and 30 hours clinical experience. Eastern Iowa Community Colleges schedules classes continually throughout the year at Scott, Clinton and Muscatine Community Colleges. Payment is required at the time of registration. IOWA HEALTHY KIDS ACT The Healthy Kids Act passed by the Iowa legislators during the 2008 session has four parts including: nutrition, dietetics, physical activity and CPR for all public and school students. Every student by the end of grade twelve shall take a CPR course that leads to certification. Effective for class 2011/2012 The administrator of a school may waive this requirement if the student is not physically able to successfully complete the training. This class is designed to assist the practical nurse in gaining knowledge and skills useful in managing personnel and client care. The learner will examine selected management problems, discuss related basic theory and principles, and apply these in solving problems. Healthcare facilities as organizations, management tasks and skills, leadership qualities and nursing care modifications for chronically ill and geriatric clients will be covered. Also open to RNs who need supervisory skills. Participants must attend the complete 45 hours to be eligible for CEUs. At the conclusion, the participant should be able to: 1. SHORT-TERM TRAINING IV THERAPY Credit: Approved for 4.5 CEUs for Nurses (Eastern Iowa Community Colleges Approved Provider No. 8 by the Iowa Board of Nursing) Fee: $450 (includes book) Kelly Schmidt, BSN, RN, CNIII Mon & Weds, March 3 31, XHECP-1097-SMB01 5:00 10:00 p.m. Final exam is April 2, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. PURPOSE: This course is designed to prepare the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy, using a peripheral intravenous catheter, a midline catheter and a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line), in a licensed hospital, a nursing facility and a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit as identified in 655 IAC Chapter 6. Major emphasis is placed on the specialized skills needed to provide intravenous therapy related to the expanded scope of the licensed practical nurse for clients who are age 12 or older and for clients who weigh 80 pounds or more. PREREQUISITES: The licensed practical nurse shall hold a current unrestricted Iowa license to practice; Must be a licensed practical nurse and provide documentation of 1040 hours of practice as a licensed practical nurse; Be practicing in a licensed hospital, a nursing facility or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit whose policies allow the licensed practical nurse to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will: 1. Summarize the major legal implications of intravenous therapy (IV) relative to Iowa Code chapter 152 and 655 IAC Chapters 4 and Select IV devices used in administering intravenous solution and drugs, indicating the criteria for use, precautions, complications of each, and documentation of equipment used. 3. Be knowledgeable of the anatomy and physiology of peripheral and central veins. 4. Select peripheral veins used for venipuncture, locating each, and listing factors that influence their size and condition for use. 8

Perform nursing responsibilities in preparation for and during venipuncture, maintenance and care of the client with an IV infusion in simulated and clinical situations, according to agency policy, with appropriate supervision. 6. Demonstrate the principles of infection control. 7. Manage IV therapy to decrease the risk of complications. 8. Summarize the fundamentals of fluid and electrolyte metabolism, listing principles of fluid therapy and classification of intravenous fluids. 9. Analyze the major drugs used intravenously, giving precautions, dose and effects, rate of infusion, side effects and reactions, factors controlling stability and compatibility, preparation, and administration of each drug. 10. Demonstrate correct technique in preparation for and during venipuncture and the maintenance and care of the client with an infusion in a simulated laboratory setting and in a clinical setting in accordance with 655 IAC Chapter Demonstrate the maintenance and care of the client with a peripheral, midline or PICC line site and/or infusion, in a simulated laboratory setting and in a clinical setting in accordance with 655 IAC Chapter Perform techniques for preparing and administering IV solutions and additives in simulated and clinical situations with appropriate supervision, according to agency policy. Clinical experience will occur in a licensed hospital, a licensed skilled nursing facility or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit. Students must complete the clinical portion of the class within 60 days of completing the simulation laboratory requirements. Please notify the Continuing Education Department for further information at or toll-free COURSE REQUIREMENTS: In order to pass the course and be awarded a certificate, the following requirements must be met: 1. Achieve a score of 90% on the math test. 2. An average score of 80% is required on the unit exams. Tests are to be given throughout the course and will reflect content of the unit/s covered. 3. Achieve a score of at least 85% on the final exam. 4. Demonstrate, with 100% accuracy in the simulation laboratory, the following skills: a. Preparation of IV equipment essential to accurate delivery of IV solution to include selection of equipment, preparing a bag, preparing a nonvented bottle, priming the tubing, connecting the tubing to the catheter, setting the drip rate. b. Insertion of a peripheral intravenous line, with a 3 inch or less catheter. c. Change tubing on an existing IV. d. Administration of medication using primary and secondary set. e. Simulation of problem solving approaches when common complications occur, such as infiltration, kinked tubing, infection. f. Midline/PICC line flush and dressing change. 5. Satisfactorily complete the theory portion and the simulation portion of the course prior to the clinical portion of the course. Clinical experience will occur in a licensed hospital, a skilled nursing facility or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit. Successful completion of each of the following activities a minimum of 3 times is required for the clinical portion of the course: a. Preparation of IV equipment essential to the accurate delivery of IV solution including selection of equipment, preparing a bag, preparing a nonvented bottle, priming the tubing, connecting the tubing to the catheter, setting the drip rate. b. Insertion of a peripheral intravenous line, with a 3 inch or less catheter. c. Preparation and administration of IV piggyback medication. d. Changing the fluid container on an existing IV. e. Midline/PICC line flush and dressing change. Each of these activities is to be performed for clients requiring the services. Students are encouraged to seek the opportunity to perform additional skills identified in the expanded and limited scope of practice for IV therapy. The Board of Nursing approved provider (EICC) will document and maintain records of the student's clinical experiences. The student will spend a minimum of 4 contact hours (50 minutes each) in the simulation laboratory performing return demonstrations. The student is allotted credit for the 16-hour laboratory and clinical portion of the course, upon completion of the laboratory and clinical requirements. The student must complete the clinical portion of the course within 60 days of completing the simulation laboratory requirements. 9

This introduction to the field of hemodialysis will provide the necessary introduction to dialysis which is required for all aspiring Dialysis Technicians. This program will provide you with a foundation to pursue a career in the field of hemodialysis. Other topics including: dietary regulation; medication problems and dialysis; acute renal failure and dialysis; kidney transplantation; peritoneal dialysis; diabetes and hemodialysis; psychological aspects of dialysis therapy; and Pediatric hemodialysis. Dialysis Technician Program - 50 Classroom Hours. At the end of the program, students should be able to: 1. Understand the role of the Dialysis Technician. 2. Review of basic chemistry of body fluids, renal physiology, and the pathology of renal failure. 3. Students will develop comprehensive skills to perform venipuncture accurately and completely safe, while also assuring to obtain good testing specimens for future analysis. As a Phlebotomy Technician applicant, you are required to have a criminal background check from the Department of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Health & Human Services Abuse Registry. The criminal background check and abuse registry check is a mandatory requirement for all students. A fee of $25 is payable first day of class to EICC. EMS EMT CLASS The Emergency Medical Technician Course is a 16 week program that includes theory, practical lab., clinical practice and field internship.
