2 CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE (CDA 2.0) Child Development Associates (CDAs) are skilled caregivers with demonstrated ability to work with newborn through five-year-old children, infant and toddler or preschool children and their families. Some are center-based caregivers, while others are family day care providers. If you are interested in becoming a CDA, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges can provide you with the required training. College Credit is available through an articulation agreement with Scott Community College, Clinton Community College and Muscatine Community College. Students who have successfully completed the Child Development Associate Credential by completing their course work through the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, Continuing Education Division, successfully completed the portfolio, work experience and Credentialing Examination may be eligible to receive up to 17 hours of college credit towards a degree at Scott Community College, Clinton Community College or Muscatine Community College. COMPLETE PROGRAM LISTING A Child Development Associate (CDA) is a person who is able to meet the specific needs of children and who, with parents and other adults, works to nurture children s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth in a child development framework. - Council for Professional Recognition Eastern Iowa Community College s CDA program is for experienced child caregivers or those who want to enter the field. The program includes 120 hours of class work plus 480 hours of field experience, all designed to give you the background to provide quality, professional child care. When you complete the program, you will be eligible to take the CDA national credentialing assessment. Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old and have earned your high school diploma or GED. Class Fee: $29 ESSENTIALS UNIT II/ CDA CONTENT AREA 7 & 8 Observing and Recording Child Growth and Development Class work covers basic development concepts, normal developmental characteristics of children, appropriate activities and expectations for children at various ages, observation and recording children s behavior. 20 hours. 2.0 CEUs for child care providers. Class Fee: $49 ESSENTIALS UNIT III/ CDA CONTENT AREA 1 Safe and Healthy Environment It is important to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment for children in their early years. Class Fee: $49 ESSENTIALS UNIT VIII CDA Assessment Preparation Preparation for final assessment: parent questionnaires, resource files, personal interview with a council representative and review of materials for final assessment. 10 hours. 1.0 CEUs for child care providers. Class Fee: $29 CDA CREDENTIALING ASSESSMENT After you have completed the CDA training program, you are eligible to take the CDA national credentialing assessment, given by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition. The fee for the assessment is $485. 5 CHILD CARE - HOME STUDY CLASSES CHILD ABUSE MANDATORY REPORTER: HOME STUDY This home-study class will inform mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse and/or neglect of their role and responsibilities. It includes an explanation of legal issues and Iowa law regarding child abuse and neglect. You will be introduced to identification factors that indicate child abuse may have occurred. Reporting procedures--how, where and when to report suspected child abuse--will be included. This is an Iowa approved curriculum. This class does not meet the requirements for healthcare, school and dental personnel. Class materials will be sent after payment is received. Approved for 0.24 CEUs for Child Care Providers. An instructor presents while the technology synchronizes what you say with your visual aids and instantly streams both over the internet. Participants will learn the occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens standard (OSHA 29 CFR Part ). Including the different types of bloodborne pathogens, their transmission, proper handling of body fluids, and the available vaccines and prophylactic drugs. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association, and any fees charged for such a course do not represent income to the association. AHA PEDIATRIC FIRST AID/OPT TOPIC/CPR This course is designed for Child Care Providers and will teach how to handle basic first aid, medical, injury, and environmental emergencies. 6 5 IOWA HEALTHY KIDS ACT The Healthy Kids Act passed by the Iowa legislators during the 2008 session has four parts including: nutrition, dietetics, physical activity and CPR for all public and private school students. Every student by the end of grade twelve shall complete certification course for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR.) The administrator of a school may waive this requirement if the student is not physically able to successfully complete the training. A student is exempt from the requirement of this paragraph if the student presents satisfactory evidence school district or accredited nonpublic school that the student possesses CPR.
