2 LABOR MARKET SNAPSHOT Regional projected growth for health science careers to 2018 is 30.82%; one of the highest projected growth rates of any other industry. Cluster Overview McKinney ISD s CTE Health Science program is one of the best programs in the North Texas region. Students have an opportunity for practicum hours and certifications in the area of Pharmaceutical medicine, Certified Nursing Assistance and Emergency Medical Technician training. Health science students participate in the HOSA organization earning National recognition in medical competitions. Students will gain a wide range of industry standard skills and experience to prepare them for any medical profession. CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE As a CNA, students can start a career in nursing at the basic nursing level. Students work with residents in nursing homes or work in hospitals or doctor s offices to monitor vital signs and provide basic patient care. This is a great introduction to the medical profession and a study in what characteristics are needed to be in the healthcare field. The first semester will end with testing for CNA license and second semester will be spent shadowing healthcare professionals in surrounding hospitals and doctor s offices. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN Pharmacy Technicians study medications that treat patients with pharmacological interventions. Pharmacy techs work in retail pharmacies, family compounding pharmacies, or with pharmaceutical companies; and could continue their studies to become a pharmacist. This class is also a great foundation for other advanced health careers such as physician or nurse. During the training, students will get the opportunity to work in a hospital pharmacy learning to mix IV medications for patients. Pharmacy students do an internship in surrounding pharmacies during their training to further their understanding of the career. EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN As an EMT, students treat patients in life threatening situations. Our EMT program is partnered with Collin College so our students get 9 hours of dual credit EMS courses from a top ranking EMS institution. EMT students are trained in medical and trauma emergencies, vehicle extractions and efficient transport of patient to the hospital. EMT students are also trained in basic patient assessment and airway management. EMT students will complete rotations in area emergency rooms and a 24 hour rotation at an area fire station to ride out with 911 ambulances. Additional fees for certification/licenses and industry standard equipment may be required. See counselor for details. Page 1 - Health Sciences Career & Technical Education - mckinneyisd.net/cte
