2 Background Biogas is recognised as suitable and sustainable energy option Mostly biogas is used to produce electricity in combined heat and power (CHP) plants In many cases the heat from the electricity generation plant is not used, but wasted leading to: macroeconomic and microeconomic losses challenges in an increasing land use competition New plants, existing plants and plants undergoing renovation or extension need concrete solutions to efficiently use the heat BiogasHeat project address the problem of how to efficiently use the heat from biogas plants 2

3 Objectives Objectives of BiogasHeat project are: - To enable economic and sustainable utilisation of heat from existing and future biogas plants, which is currently wasted - To increase capability and capacity in biogas heat utilisation in project target countries and abroad 3

4 Main steps - Good practice biogas heat use examples and development of Handbook on sustainable heat use from biogas plants - Promising business models and entrepreneurial strategies for biogas heat use (feasibility studies and analysis of technical options) in cooperation with biogas and heat market actors - Field testing of models and strategies in real projects - Round table discussions and workshops for policy makers, authorities and biogas plant operators - Coaching events and European conference to transfer experience of developing sustainable heat markets for biogas plants to other European countries 4

6 Results achieved so far (1) 20 good practice biogas heat use examples, including: District heating to residential areas Heating to SPA center Transporting biogas to remote CHP Use of heat in ORC plant Use of heat in aquaculture Use of heat for cooling Heat for industrial processes Drying Heating greenhouses etc... 6

8 Results achieved so far (3) National and European policy enforcement regarding the heat utilisation in biogas plants strategy paper Presentations at relevant DGs Expert interviews in several European countries and European workshop Implementation of feasibility checks for real biogas plants and following the implementation of heat use solutions on site 1 st round of National workshops 8

9 Further planned activities: Direct technical assistance to biogas heat market players through Helpdesk and FAQ list Regional/national roundtable discussions National workshops disseminating the main project results and lessons learnt European conference in Brussels in October 2014 Coaching events to other European regions 9
