2 Data Call for Abstracts Invitation The 2014 Australasian Data Conference will be held in Sydney on Tuesday 18 November and Wednesday 19 November. We are pleased to invite prospective presenters to submit their abstracts for consideration by the Program Committee. In 2014, the conference will be hosted by the Macquarie University, Australian Bureau of Statistics and the University of Sydney. The 2014 conference will bring together leading professionals from Australia, New Zealand and other countries for two days of discussion and networking about current issues surrounding mortality data, with particular emphasis on the Australasian region. Based around the theme of, the conference aims to: Present a selection of the latest research findings associated with mortality data Highlight innovations in examining and presenting data Identify international developments in mortality data Provide a forum for mortality data professionals and researchers to exchange information and forge constructive partnerships Highlight the links between research and the development of health policy We look forward to your involvement in what promises to be a rewarding experience. 3 Data Call for Abstracts Who Attends Key Dates The annual Australasian Data conference is now a regular feature on the calendars of practitioners and researchers who have an interest in mortality data within Australasia and beyond. This conference typically attracts around delegates from a wide range of government, industry, community and research organisations, and allows focused discussion and networking around common issues relating to the collection, processing, reporting and uses of mortality data. The conference should be relevant to a wide range of participants including: Epidemiologists within the health/mortality areas Researchers or policy makers who use mortality data Safety and injury prevention groups Members of death review panels ncies who are responsible for mortality data collections and / or distribution Coroners and Forensic practitioners 23 May Call for abstracts open 28 July Early bird registration opens 08 August Abstract submission deadline 29 August Abstract notification to authors 05 September Acceptance by authors 10 October Early bird registration closes 11 October Standard registration opens 13 November Standard registration closes 18 November Day 1 of conference 19 November Day 2 of conference

4 Data Call for Abstracts Themes The theme of this years Australasian Data (AMDIG) conference will be. As the ability to bring together data from different sources grows, the potential to enhance datasets and answer complex questions also increases. In 2014, priority will be given to presentations which focus on this theme. These might include: Examples of data linkage studies. Ways in which data linkage has been successfully facilitated in Australia or overseas. Challenges and/or barriers to linking data in Australia and New Zealand. Finding and using mortality data from multiple sources Governance and legislation for mortality data in the information age In addition to presentations associated with this theme, AMDIG would also be interested in other mortality related presentations, including those relating to: Methods and data sources; International developments and perspectives; Importance of geographical distribution research; Innovations in presentation of data; Examination of mortality data; How mortality data relates and links to life events. There has been interest from some stakeholders in presentations regarding other vital events, specifically birth statistics. AMDIG would be open to submissions on birth related topics, and may be able to include these in this years conference.

5 Data Presentation Types Papers for Oral Presentations Poster Presentations The Program Committee seeks abstracts from interested parties for two types of Presentation. Authors should state their preferred presentation type in their abstract submission. Paper for oral presentation Poster presentation Oral presentations will be minutes in duration with 5 10 minutes allowed for questions. Presenters who submit abstracts that have high significance and/or relevance to the conference theme may be offered an extended presentation time. Upon acceptance, oral presentation authors will be notified as to whether they have been allocated an extended presentation time. Oral presentations should be considered for participants who wish to demonstrate ideas or findings that will generate discussion, consist of new developments to the field and/or have a high relevance to the conference theme. The abstracts for papers accepted for oral presentation will be published in the conference proceedings. Poster presentations enable participants to present research in summary form which is suitable for descriptive outline, and requires little additional explanation or context. Posters will be permanently on display throughout the conference and authors will be given an opportunity to provide a 5 10 minute overview about their poster in a designated poster session. Poster content will also need to be submitted in the form of an abstract for publication in the conference proceedings.

6 Data Abstract Assessment Method of Submission All abstracts will be peer reviewed and the program will be finalised by the Program Committee. Confirmation of acceptance or rejection will be ed to each submitting author on 29 August using the address provided during the submission process. It is the responsibility of the submitting author to ensure they receive this communication. If your address changes after completing the abstract submission form, be sure to advise your new address to the workshop organisers. The selection criteria will be based on: Relevance to the workshop themes Importance to mortality data improvement Quality of reported work Originality of reported work Clarity of presentation Abstracts submitted for an oral presentation may be accepted as a poster presentation should the material be considered better suited to this format. In order to have their papers and posters included in the workshop program, authors must accept their invitation to present by 5 September. Submit abstracts via to: kate.black@abs.gov.au Please ensure the phrase AMDIG 2014 Abstract Submission [Author Surname] is in the subject heading. E.g. AMDIG 2014 Abstract Submission Smith. Abstracts must be submitted by 5pm 08 August 2014 (Brisbane time). An reply will acknowledge receipt of abstracts.

7 Data Method of Submission All submissions should be provided as a MS Office Word document, two pages in length, in the following format: Page One Relevant Workshop theme (refer above themes) Proposed presentation type Abstract title less than 15 words Name and contact details of corresponding author Authors names presenter underlined Authors affiliations Short biography of presenter (maximum 30 words). This information will be used by the session chair for introduction purposes and may possibly be published in workshop literature. Page Two Authors names (presenter underlined) Abstract title Abstract (250 words maximum) The abstract should follow one of the following outlines: A. Research Background Aims Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions or B. Policy and Practice Context Objectives Key Messages Discussion and Conclusions

8 Data Method of Submission All submissions should be thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar before submission. Abstracts should be the authors own work and be submitted in English, using Times New Roman 12 point font single-spaced with headings and sub-headings in bold type. Abstracts should be ed in a MS Office Word format. File names should represent the surname of the main, first-presenting author underscored with the initial of their first name (e.g. smith_w.doc or smith_w. docx). Submissions that do not comply with the above criteria may not be considered for inclusion. By submission of an abstract, all authors agree to allow publication of their abstract in workshop proceedings for distribution to participants. On acceptance of an abstract, authors will be invited (but not required to): 1. Allow publication of the full text version of papers for distribution to participants; 2. Allow publication of papers and slide presentations on the AMDIG website.

9 Data Guidelines for preparation of papers / posters For further information Guidelines for preparation of oral presentations or posters will be provided to authors on acceptance of abstracts. Costs Successful presenters will be responsible for all costs associated with attending the conference, and presentation of the paper. A small number of partial scholarships may be available.
