1 Subject: Paper Airplane Toss Question: We are planning on doing a Paper Airplane Promotion for a summer trip giveaway at a basketball game. If anyone has done this promotion before, could you please pass on info regarding rules you have used. Please reply to robertd@sandiego.edu. Thanks, Brent DiGiacomo, University of San Diego Responses: We have done away with the paper airplane promotion here and adapted the hockey chuck-a-puck idea into basketball. I sell small 3 inch diameter stress balls prior to halftime. Each ball is numbered and the buyer writes his/her name down on a sheet of paper beside the corresponding number. Place a target at center court during halftime and count to three and all the balls come flying down! It is quite a site! We have teamed up with the Louisiana Lottery so our promotion is called Lotto Balls. You must be 21 to play, though the kids love to throw the balls, so as long as the name on the sheet and person winning is 21, all is good. If multiple balls enter the target, I draw them out one at a time listing the small prizes they have won ($10 gift certificates). The final ball drawn out is the power ball winner of whatever large prize is available for that night (usually a prize pack of goodies from Lottery as well as some other stuff like tickets to events and upcoming games). I ve always had at least one winner. Should no ball enter the target, which is a large bucket in the shape of a basketball, I will pick the ball that came to rest closest to the target. Clean up is pretty quick and easy, then separate the balls and sell them again at the next game. I have to inventory the balls ever so often since some do walk out. It has been a big hit so far. - Kevin Shipp, University of New Orleans Brent- We just did this last week at a men s basketball game. We had the contest sponsored by our local airport. They wanted to push their seasonal promotional prices to our students, so we printed off 5,000 fliers with the promotional information at the top and a space at the bottom for each person s name and seat location. At half time we had everyone throw their paper air plane at the same time, with the person getting closest to the target at center court winning 2 round trip airplane tickets. It worked really well. 2 We conducted a paper airplane promo at one of our basketball games this season. Our game sponsor, Old Town Canoe and Kayak, offered to give away a FREE canoe to one lucky fan. We handed out a flyer, see attached, to everyone in attendance with instructions on how to fold up a simple airplane. After the game we came on the floor, put the canoe in the middle, and with a wireless microphone gave the fans their instructions and told them to toss them on our mark. It is not easy to land a paper airplane into a canoe, and unfortunately none did go in, but we took the 4 closest to the canoe, put them inside and had one of our cheerleaders pick a winner randomly. Overall the promo was good, and the winner was happy, which goes without saying. Fans seemed to enjoy it, the sponsor liked it and the attention that came along with all the PAs. One thing to consider would be to use heavier stock paper as simple sheets don't fly well. At any rate, good luck and I hope this info helps. - Shaun Russell, University of Maine

8 Presents HawaiiAN FLY-IN CONTEST! Contest Rules 1. To be eligible to win the Grand prize, round trip coach airfare and 7 night hotel stay for two to Hawaii, each entry must be properly filled out with name, address, phone number, and seat number in the space provided. 2. All participants in the Hawaiian Fly-In contest must be 18 years or older or accompanied by a parent or guardian. 3. At halftime of tonight s game, a target will be placed at center court.
