3 INTRODUCTION The IIDA Student Design Competition celebrates the talent and fresh design ideas of interior design students throughout the world who are currently enrolled in a licensed interior design program or institution. The competition provides emerging professionals the opportunity to showcase their work and gain exposure in the interior design industry. CONCEPT There has been a paradigm shift in higher education due to multiple factors: rising tuition costs, increase in entrepreneurial hubs with hands-on apprenticeships and training, and new research on teaching best practices. With this shift comes the opportunity to rethink how educational institutions are managed, planned, and designed. Higher education facilities have historically segregated their functions: public versus private, learning versus social, hospitality versus study. Classrooms were often developed for maximum occupancy not one-on-one collaborative learning environments, and residence halls only focused on the basic housing needs of students. As the landscape of higher education evolves, institutions are beginning to experiment with entrepreneurial, creative hubs supported by changes in academic policies to incorporate multidisciplinary study and/or personalpaced learning programs, as well as increased interaction between students, faculty, community members, and professionals. Recent trends include retail and restaurant functions that are open to the community, partnerships with developers or corporations, professional research space within the confines of a campus, and the blending of social and academic experiences within residence halls. This year, IIDA would like SDC participants to look at the future of the urban university design where multiple functions inhabit a single, multilevel space that combines learning, living, business, and community within the classic academic and current social spheres of higher education. 3 Updated as of 9/02/15
4 CHALLENGE The 2015 IIDA SDC invites you to conceptualize the future of an urban university mixed-use building that integrates the multiple functions associated with a higher education campus while considering adaptive learning, integration of corporate and business resources, community involvement, and alternative education resources. Encouraging collaboration, health and well-being, and sustainability should be evident in your final design. It should also address new strategies and approaches to higher education. Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. is slated for a regrowth after years of financial struggles and urban flight. Students will need to design three floors of a high-rise in Detroit. The reference site of where your design will be located is the Free Press Building by architect Albert Kahn located at 321 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit, MI The now abandoned high-rise is 14 stories tall at the tower and has two basement levels. The building is a steel frame with a limestone facade. While floor plans are not readily available at this time, the basic dimensions have been provided. The design solution must take into account the living, academic, and social needs of the student body, faculty, staff, and community. Students are encouraged to investigate how academic, social, business, and realworld experiential elements can be blended together seamlessly to create balance between living and learning on an urban campus. Think about what aspects of design are important in both the recruitment and retention of students while also being mindful of the surrounding community s needs. Consider necessary collaborative spaces (flexible rooms for formal study, social activity, common spaces, classrooms, etc.), the need for private spaces (offices, individual dorm rooms, individual study spaces, possible residences for faculty and staff, etc.), the potential for business and entrepreneurial spaces, and the benefits of easy customization for all. Design Considerations: 1. Thermal comfort and temperature 2. Access to nature, views, and daylight 3. Noise/acoustic control 4. Indoor air quality 5. Sustainable design principles 6. Security 7. Accessible and usable buildings and facilities (ADA/IBC) 4 Updated as of 9/02/15
5 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS The following programmatic requirements must be included in your urban, mixeduse campus design. You may add additional programming elements if you feel it elevates and further evolves your design solution. Students must design the interior for at least three stories of the selected building. Students are required to design the first floor/lobby/community zone (use floor plans 2 and 3 for reference) plus two additional floors (use floor plans 4, 5, 6, and/or 7 for reference) of their choosing that include the below programmatic elements. Please note that you may, but are not required to, modify the current structure and exterior elements in the development of your concept. Product Requirements: Design solutions must incorporate a selection of furniture from the OFS Brands education brochure. Information on available products can be found here: Students are encouraged but not required to incorporate other products from OFS Brands in their design solutions from the following lines: - OFS Brands: - OFS: - First Office: - Carolina: - Loewenstein: - Highmark: 5 Updated as of 9/02/15

9 Consider the following questions in the development of your design solution: 1. How can you balance students social and academic needs in a mixed-use building? 2. How do you accommodate the collaborative needs of students and faculty from each academic program while also facilitating interaction among the programs? 3. How can you provide relaxation and entertainment spaces for students without disrupting the academic needs of others? 4. How can you offer outdoor respite to a community that resides within an urban environment? 5. How do you foster a sense of community with students within the mixeduse building as well as the outside community? 6. How do you distinguish different disciplines or classes within one building? 7. How do you create an atmosphere that is mutual to all parties including students, faculty, and the community at large? Helpful tips: 1. Remember, although this is a creative challenge, please keep functionality in mind. Ensure that you are getting the basic program requirements included and accurate. 2. Imagine yourself using the space and how you would like to see the space flow with your daily routine. Make it personal! 3. The project needs to keep sustainability as a basic principle. Keep this in mind throughout the facility. 4. Based upon your particular research for the future urban education facility, ensure that your project description matches your final design concept. 5. Although the program requirements are asking for the basic items to be included, should your research bring forward additional items or elements that you feel should be included to further provide interest, energy or enhanced effect, please include and allow for explanation. 9 Updated as of 9/02/15
