1 PM1: Print Media 1 TEC 181/182 Course Description General Goal PM1: Print Media 1, is a one semester course that provides students with a basic knowledge of the graphic arts industry and its technologies. Students will learn about desktop publishing software, graphic arts imaging, image assembly & lithographic plate making, offset & digital duplicator operation, bindery techniques, and the screen printing operations of stencil making and printing. Students will do assignments that will result in the generation of usable finished products. Course Objectives The student will be able to: 1. Perform printing operations, in quantity, using the technologies of offset lithography and screen printing. 2. Demonstrate a command of type characteristics and how they affect usage and design in assigned projects. 3. Demonstrate a command of various categories of artwork and how they affect usage and design in assigned projects. 4. Demonstrate a command of the use of desktop publishing equipment and software. 5. Prepare a one-color layout for precision duplication. 6. Properly expose and process print media photographic materials. 7. Prepare an offset plate properly for use on an offset duplicator. 8. Operate and maintain offset and digital duplicators. 9. Set-up and operate each of the lab's pieces of bindery equipment. 10. Prepare direct stencil and precisely screen print multiple copies. Specific Course Activities 1. Participate in class discussions, demonstrations, and note taking sessions. 2. Read textbook and handouts as assigned. 3. Be a positive role model in cleanup and maintenance groups. 4. Complete assigned graphic arts projects. 5. Be a positive role model with attendance patterns (minimum absences/tardies) Evaluation 80% - Assignments and Projects 20% - W.H.A.T. (Work Habits, Attendance, Trustworthiness) & Cleanup

Lesson 1.3: Counterfeit and Copyright 1. List counterfeit laws. 2. List copyright laws. Unit 2: Vector Imaging for Single Color Vinyl and Screen Printing Applications Lesson 2.1: Introduction to Vector Graphics 1. Define vector as it applies to vector graphics. 2. Draw the following shapes in Illustrator: rectangle, square, ellipse, circle, rounded rectangle, polygon, and star. 3. Apply stroke and fill colors to objects in Illustrator. 4. Adjust the number of sides on a polygon and number of points on a star. 5. Create text in a line, in a shape and on a path in Illustrator. 6. Create outlines from text. 7. Create smooth anchor point paths with the Pen Tool in Illustrator. 8. Create corner anchor point paths with the Pen Tool in Illustrator. 9. Create combination corner and smooth anchor point paths with the Pen Tool in Illustrator. 10. Insert templates in Illustrator. 11. Trace simple objects with the Pen Tool in Illustrator. 12. Trace moderately complex objects with the Pen Tool in Illustrator. 13. Manipulate paths with the Direct Selection Tool. 14. Combine shapes using Pathfinders in Illustrator. Lesson 2.2: Die Cutting 1. Attach a CDF stencil to a screen. 5. Expose the CDF stencil. 6. Mask a screen. 7. Screen print using the flood and print method. Unit 3: Raster Image Capture and Manipulation for Digital Print Applications Lesson 3.1: Digital Image Capture 1. Define raster graphics. 2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of vector and raster graphics. 3. Define ppi and discuss how it affects image quality. 4. Calculate the reduction and enlargement range of images for professional quality prints based on the resolution. 5. Demonstrate an understanding of lighting needs in a digital environment. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the 10 rules of composition in digital photography. 7. Scan images at proper resolution for output device and size. 8. Enhance, correct, and resize digital images in Photoshop. Lesson 3.2: Wide Format Ink-Jet Printing 1. Select proper color space for print. 2. Properly prepare and send file from the RIP software to the wide format ink- jet printer. 3. Load media in wide format ink- jet printer. Lesson 3.3: Image Manipulation 1. Make complex and precise selections in Photoshop. 2. Distribute, organize, resize and arrange images on layers in Photoshop. 3. Apply layer effects in Photoshop. 4. Apply filters in Photoshop. 5. Create gradients in Photoshop. 6. Adjust layer opacity and layer styles in Photoshop. Lesson 3.4: Heat Transfer Digital Printing 1. Create a professional grade raster graphic in Photoshop. 2. Prepare raster graphics for print. 3. Choose proper settings in InDesign for proper output on heat transfer material. 4. Transfer image from heat transfer material to final product. Unit 4: Page Layout for Digital Duplicator and Digital Print Applications Lesson 4.1 Typography 1. Identify the parts of type. 2. Format text using font, size, style, leading, and kerning in InDesign. 3. List the six type categories. 4. Describe characteristics of each type category. 5. Categorize typefaces in their type category. 6. Select appropriate typefaces for printed communications. 7. Insert, move, rotate, and resize images in InDesign. 8. Create design elements in InDesign.

Layout pages with precise measurements in InDesign. 2. Set tabs in Adobe InDesign. 3. Use multiple text boxes in Adobe InDesign for advanced layout. 4. Adjust leading in a document to place text in exact locations in InDesign. Lesson 6.2: Offset Press Operation 1. Prepare images for output on the offset press. 2. Set proper print settings in Adobe InDesign to print a polyester plate. 3. Demonstrate proper safety practices when operating the offset press. 4. Identify the main systems of an offset press. 5. Identify parts of the feeding system on the offset press. 6. Identify parts of the register system on the offset press. 7. Identify parts of the imaging system on the offset press.

Properly prepare and send file from the RIP software to the vinyl cutter. 4. Weed excess vinyl from each color of the decal. 5. Register colors using transfer taper with 1/32 tolerance. 6. Adhere vinyl without bubbling. Lesson 7.3: Preparing Spot Color Images with Trapping 1. Define trapping. 2. Discuss the difference between printing with spot colors and process colors. 3.
