1 ADVANCED GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS CURRICULUM GRADES RAHWAY HIGH SCHOOL Course Philosophy: We have a responsibility for modeling and teaching the skills and attitudes that each student will need to meet the challenges of our technological society. The staff member will work closely with parents to maintain open communication about the program, progress, and problems of each student. The staff member is committed to setting and fostering a climate in which classroom and other learning activities have first priority; in which discipline and order are maintained through mutual respect; in which a sense of dignity and self-esteem is fostered; and in which everyone is encouraged to do his best. It is only through such efforts that education remains alive and meaningful. Graphic Arts fosters this

2 development by giving a foundation of industrial skills, consumer knowledge, and desirable attitudes necessary for happier and more effective living. *Note: Highlighted Text is Technology Utilized Scope of Advanced : Graphic Arts is a course in which successful completion of Graphic Arts I is a pre-requisite. In the second year, a graphic arts student will learn to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the graphic communications industry. Electronic composition, digital imaging and desktop systems are utilized to prepare students and printing jobs. Jobs are output directly to plate material with a reproduction camera in a darkroom environment. Production jobs are finished and prepared for delivery through the use of various printing, folding, stitching, cutting and binding machines. Emphasis is placed on the development of quality standards and safe operation procedures. Economy of materials, quality standards, and school and industrial safety are stressed in all areas. Course Objectives: Create an awareness of how the communicated word is produced. Originate and make projects for personal use as well as for others. Develop skills in operating modern machinery. Experience inter-action among peers in sharing work to produce a product. Examine attitudes and occupations in related career fields. Understand the relationship with industry and the world of work. Help students to understand sequential steps in operating sophisticated equipment. Reinforcement of reading and math skills. Insure good work habits such as promptness, responsibility, cooperation, following directions, reading directions, and writing skills. Benchmark Assessments 50%...Class Work/Project Assignments 20%...Tests 10%...Open Book Reading/Writing Assignments 20%...Teacher Observation of Preparation/Participation/Attitude/Behavior Following the distribution and discussion of the Safety & Classroom rules, a test will be given to all students. Students must pass 2/3 of such questions before being permitted to operate shop equipment. Teacher observation will be used to evaluate student proficiency in operating various pieces of shop equipment. Following each demonstration, each student is required to immediately (or as soon as practicable) operate such machine in a practice mode. Students will be evaluated by the following methods: o Response to following directions o Class performance-work habits o Layout grades o Press copy grades o Teacher observation o Safety test results safe habits o Clean up & maintenance of room & equipment on daily, weekly, & end-of-year basis o Test results o Open book reading/writing assignments o Extra credit work

4 ADVANCED KEYBOARDING TECHNIQUES demonstrate correct keyboard techniques and proficiency.
