3 The 54th Annual Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards and Innovation Showcase For fifty-four years, the FPA Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Competition has honored the amazing innovation taking place in the flexible packaging industry. The innovative developments in materials, design, structure and sustainability have advanced the use of flexible packaging into numerous markets and various industries. FPA continues to celebrate the outstanding industry achievements that are meeting the diverse needs of both end-users and consumers. The entries and award winning packages of the 2010 FPA Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Competition incorporate outstanding manufacturing and design breakthroughs that improve product protection and reduce spoilage during distribution; unique designs and graphics that enhance the presence of packaging on store shelves; and, consumer-friendly features that ease food preparation and reduce waste. This publication features all the entries and winning packages of the 2010 competition. The Achievement Awards section showcases the twenty-two winning entries by award (Highest Achievement, Gold and Silver) level. The Innovation Showcase section includes the competition entries, which are presented in alphabetical order by package name. This unique package consists of a twopart, thermoformed rollstock that separates meat/poultry from a restaurant quality marinade. To begin the marinade process, the end-user simply squeezes the marinade pocket to break the seal. This easy, sanitary, and controlled process preserves the quality of the meat/poultry and meets the demand for convenient, high performance packaging materials. Highest Achievement Awards are given to a Gold Award winning package ranked by the judges as having contributed most to the advancement of the industry. 9

9 Gold Awards Amcor Contour Perforation Emmi Cheese Plate Gold Award Winner Packaging Excellence Manufacturer: Amcor Flexibles, Incorporated End User/Customer: Emmi Käse AG Plant: Amcor Flexibles Schüpbach Burgdorf, Switzerland Designer/Design Firm: Birte Dorenkamp, Emmi Schweiz Package Description: The innovative packaging format used to pack Emmi s cheese plate consists of a tray with four separate cavities, sealed with a lidding film from Amcor Flexibles, which plays an important role in the launch of this new product. Through Amcor s know-how in contour perforation technology, Emmi was able to give consumers the choice to either open the whole pack at once or to access individual portions only. Fresenius Dialyzer Package Forming Web Gold Award Winner Technical Innovation Manufacturer: Berry Plastics Corporation End User/Customer: Fresenius Medical Plant: Dalton, GA Designer/Design Firm: Flow wrap film, Berry Plastics Corporation; Package design, Fresenius Medical Package Description: The Fresenius Dialyzer Package Forming Web is a new packaging solution for dialyzers. This innovative flow wrap package is cost competitive and features a two-component thermoformable Nylon/PE laminated bottom web, which is sealed to coated Tyvek. The flow wrap package provides improved manufacturing efficiencies twofold. Through this package, the customer has improved sterilization techniques and converted from an EO gas to an E-Beam radiation technique. 11

The retortable zipper withstands the stresses of the retort process and conveniently stores remaining portions. The linear tear technology provides consumer convenience by opening cleanly and straight every time. Product breakage was virtually eliminated as compared to existing glass packaging. 12

The film formulation offers the perfect balance of stiffness for high load containment, elasticity to allow the user to pull the film tight around a load, and superior puncture resistance for excellent corner handling. In addition, the folded edge virtually eliminates product loss from edge hang while significantly improving load containment and tear resistance. Rotogravure printing combined with KromaSilk technology provides enhanced printing over the normal rotogravure print on metal containing substrates. KromaSilk utilizes a unique separation process that delivers a variety of graphic effects from silky gradation transitions to pseudo holographic color shifts. Werther s Original Caramel Chocolate Stabilo Bag Gold Award Winner Printing Achievement Manufacturer: Sonoco Flexible Packaging End User/Customer: Storck USA Plant: Sonoco Flexible Packaging Hartsville, SC Designer/Design Firm: Pat Pellizzaro, Technical Lead Package Description: The Werther s Original Caramel Chocolate Stabilo Bag represents an improvement over existing package. The package incorporates a quad seal flat bottom bag offering excellent shelf presence. Its 3-ply structure offers great stiffness and excellent machineability on quad seal VFFS packaging equipment. 14

The customer s expectations were met with an exceptional print job that includes tight registration, proper color and shading in the graphics. Amcor Stickpack Kerry Foods Cheestrings Shots Silver Award Winner Packaging Excellence Manufacturer: Amcor Flexibles, Incorporated End User/Customer: Kerry Foods Charleville Ltd. Plant: Amcor Flexibles Schüpbach Burgdorf, Switzerland Designer/Design Firm: Jones Knowles Ritchie, JKR Package Description: Kerry Foods Cheestrings Shots are aimed at children and promote a shake and shoot consumption behavior. The Amcor Stickpack aids in the fun nature of the new product. A child-friendly, easy opening has been achieved by applying microperforation on the top of the package. Consumers simply shake the pack, tear it open, and shoot the Cheestrings Shots into their mouths. The package combines high barrier properties with an easy-opening and direct consumption from the package. Eliminating the need for the cardboard box used in typical bag-in-box designs, the Bag Without A Box removes a cost element, logistical challenge, and breeding ground for microbes and pests. The technology is extremely versatile, and it is being used for products ranging from soups to antifreeze. 15

Creating new and innovative packaging is one of the ways to retain and grow appeal with customers. By creating an environmentally-friendly ink system that creates a shimmer and reflective effect, clients are getting the results they want without having to invest in expensive foils, solvent inks or UV chemicals. Plant: Oliver-Tolas Healthcare Packaging, Feasterville, PA Designer/Design Firm: Oliver-Tolas Healthcare Packaging Key Suppliers: Oracle Packaging, E.I. dupont de Nemours & Company, Monadnock Paper Mills, Incorporated Package Description: The Dispos-a-Vent is a combination of good design and good manufacturing capabilities, which result in reduced cost and time for OEMs. The package eliminates the possibility of a compromise in sterility by providing a generous high barrier film or foil pouch area for easy product transport after sterilization. Halls Nite Silver Award Winner Printing Achievement Manufacturer: Sonoco Flexible Packaging End User/Customer: Cadbury Adams Plant: Sonoco Flexible Packaging Hartsville, SC Designer/Design Firm: Don McArthur Package Description: The Halls Nite is a new Halls product, which is sold as a confectionery product globally and not as an over the counter medication. The printing process and the colors chosen for these designs make the Halls Nite a beautiful package with great shelf appeal. 16

This structure can withstand a multitude of chemicals and solutions, without compromising lamination bond strength or seal integrity for long periods of time. The true flat bottom bag provides all these benefits in one. Increased film stiffness from the four corner seals provides the consumer with the feel of a durable package. These features along with enhanced graphics provide the consumer with an unbeatable combination of innovation and shelf appeal. 17

By using completely sustainable materials which are compostable, Key West Gourmet and Genpak LP are proving that there are eco-friendly solutions to flexible packaging.
