1 Login to My Classes Online: Go to Enter your Username (which is your college wide i.d. number found by logging into HawkNet) and your Password (which is the first initial of your first name and the first 3 digits of your college wide i.d. number) then click the Log In button. Navigate your My Workspace page: The first page a student sees after logging in is the My Workspace page. The My Workspace page provides a quick way to view all courses Announcements, Calendar events, Course Mail and allows the uploading of personal files. 1

2 The Course Guide menu is available on the left hand side of the page and provides: My Workspace: Clicking this link from anywhere inside a My Workspace tool returns you to the My Workspace homepage. Announcements: Displays all available announcements from each course. Calendar: Displays course events from each course. The student can Add personal events to the My Workspace Calendar (only the student can see them; no other student or the instructor can view them). The student can remove private calendar events, but cannot remove events placed on the calendar by the instructor. My Files: A place to upload and store your personal files (250MB of storage is available). Support Services: Displays website for support services available at Northeast Community College to help students succeed. Preferences: Allows you to control which courses display, set notifications, and pick your time zone. Account: Allows you to reset your password. Site Setup: Allows you to create, edit and delete sites from the top navigation menu. Help: Displays contact information for Online Technology Support, Web Support and support. It also provides information about different topics related to the learning management system. Change your login password: On your My Workspace page, click the Account section, enter and re enter (verify) the new password, and click the Update Details button. Change your address: The course tool only allows s to be sent within the course unless the student enters a forwarding address. On your My Workspace page, click the Account section, enter the forwarding address into the box, and click the Update Details button. Forward course and announcements to your private account: messages from the instructor and other students remain inside the course unless the student allows Sakai to forward course s and announcements to a private account. If you do not prefer to have your messages forwarded, on your My Workspace page, click the Preferences option > click the Notifications tab > select the methods related to how you wish to be notified, then click the Update Preferences button. Change your time zone: Central Time is the default time zone. Changing the time zone will cause any dates/times entered by the instructor to be converted into your local time zone. On your My Workspace page, click the Preferences option > click the Time Zone tab > click once on your preferred time zone from the menu, then click the Update Preferences button > click My Workspace to return to your My Workspace page. 2

3 To enter an online course: Click the My Sites tab (in the upper right hand corner of any page) > click on a course title Your courses can also be accessed by clicking on the course title in the Quicklinks list: 3

4 To customize the Quicklinks list, click the Edit button. Click on a course title then use the arrow buttons to move Sites into Active or Hidden. Click the Update Preferences button when finished. Navigate a course site: Once you have entered a course, read the course Recent Announcements to get the most recent directions from your instructor about the tasks you are to perform. Click on linked words to view your tasks and begin work (you can always find these same tasks located in the Course Guide to the left). 4

5 The Course Guide now provides: Announcements: Instructors create course announcements to provide directions to the student. View all available announcements here. Click the Announcements link in the Course Guide > click on the announcement s title to view it Calendar: The Calendar provides additional information on student tasks such as due dates for assignments. View the Calendar: Click the Calendar link in the Course Guide > click on the calendar event to view all its details Change the view of the Calendar: Click the Calendar option in the Course Guide > in the View dropdown menu, select your preference: display the Calendar by Day (or Week, Month, Year) or List of Events Course Mail: Use the course mail tool to send e mail messages to your instructor and other students. Enter a Discussion and read the discussion topic: Click the Discussions link in the Course Guide > click on the title of the discussion > click on the View Full Description link to view the discussion question Create a Post: Click the Post New Thread button > enter a Title and compose a Message > Click the Post Message button when finished. Read a Post: Click on the title of the post. Click the Display Entire Message button to expand all posts for easy viewing; click it again to collapse the post text. Reply to a Post: Click on the title to open it, and then click the Reply to Thread button (or you can also click the Reply option in the right hand corner of the posting) > compose a Message then click the Post Message button Reply to a Reply: Click on the title of the Reply message (has Re: in front of the title) > click the Reply to Message button > compose a Message then click the Post Message button 5

6 Syllabus: The course syllabus provides course objectives, details on grading, and other instructor expectations. Click the Syllabus link in the Course Guide to read the course syllabus. Assignments: The instructor may assign a task that requires you to compose an answer and/or submit a file to be graded. An Assignment will provide directions needed to complete the task and provide you with an option to submit your finished work. Click the Assignments link in the Course Guide > click on the title of the Assignment to open it > read the directions from the instructor > type a submission in the Assignment Text box and/or click the Add Attachment button to attach a file > click the Submit button when finished Tests & Quizzes: Your instructor may require you take an exam. To start an exam, click on the Test & Quizzes link in the Course Guide > click on the title of the exam > read the assessment details then click the Begin Assessment button to start taking the exam > complete the questions asked > when you are completely finished click the Submit for Grading button Gradebook: A student can always monitor earned scores and grades from here. Support Services: This link presents a webpage that includes information about online student support services. Library: This link opens the Northeast Learning Resource Center (Library) webpage. Moving back a page: Avoid using the browser s Back button to go back to a previously viewed page. Instead click on the blue arrows provided to return to a previously viewed page: 6
