6 Introducing TV Navigator Welcome to TV Navigator. TV Navigator provides you with the following features: Channel banner This is a bar that displays at the bottom of your TV screen. It shows program information for the currently tuned program. You can browse with the channel banner to display program information for programs and channels other than the one you are tuned to. Program guide The program guide shows what s on TV. You can also use it to tune to programs, to record programs, or to purchase pay-per-view (PPV) programs. Quick Settings menu This menu allows you to set certain TV Navigator options quickly and easily, such as activating parental control and making the current channel a favorite. General Settings menu This menu allows you to set many TV Navigator preferences. Parental control Parental control allows you to restrict what channels, ratings, and time periods your household members can watch. Pay-per-view purchasing Pay-per-view purchasing allows you to purchase, watch, and record pay-per-view programs. About this guide This guide helps you to start using TV Navigator and includes instructions for the following: Using the remote control, turning on the TV, VCR, and cable settop (digital terminal), and displaying the channel banner. Using the program guide, including displaying it, navigating in it, and arranging the information by themes and titles. Specifying quick settings, such as activating parental control, recording a channel, making a channel a favorite, playing secondary audio, and activating the sleep timer. Specifying general settings, such as setting up purchase and blocking PINs, timers, blocked channels, ratings, and time periods, and many other preferences. Recording programs now and setting recording timers to record future programs. Setting up parental control, including setting the blocking PIN, specifying which channels, ratings, and time periods you want blocked, and activating parental control. Purchasing pay-per-view programs, including setting or changing the purchase PIN and canceling pending purchases. 1
7 Getting Started This section describes the remote control, how you turn on the TV, cable settop (digital terminal), and VCR, and how you display and use the channel banner and program guide. About the remote control The picture on page 3 shows the Pioneer remote control. The table below lists all buttons on the remote with a description of each button. Your digital remote control may vary slighty from the one pictured. Please consult the Operating Instructions sheet that came with your digital remote. It will give you step-by-step directions for programming the remote to work with your television, VCR, and/or stereo system. To turn on the Stereo Press the AUD button. The stereo turns on. Changing channels To change channels If you know the channel number, enter the number using the number buttons. Press the SELECT button for immediate tuning. Adjusting the volume level To adjust the volume level To increase the volume, press + on the VOL button. To decrease the volume, press - on the VOL button. To turn the volume off completely, press the MUTE button. To unmute the volume and continue listening to the program, press the MUTE button again. Displaying the channel banner TV Navigator includes the channel banner to provide quick access to program information about the program title and the program s start and end time. The figure below shows the channel banner. To go one channel up from the current channel, press + on the CH button. To go one channel down from the current channel, press - on the CH button. To see previously tuned channel (tuned to with the numbered buttons), press the LAST button. To see the next channel that you specified as a favorite channel, press the FAV button. Note: Refer to Choosing Quick Settings on page 12 and the Favorite Channels option in the General Settings menu on page 11. 4
10 Getting Started Displaying the channel banner The channel banner shows the following information: The channel logo, number, and call letters The program title, start time, and end time The current time TV Navigator symbols where appropriate (for example, the star symbol for a favorite channel) You can browse program title and time information with the channel banner this allows you to continue watching the current program while checking program information for other channels and other times in the banner. The figure below shows the channel banner while you are browsing. To display the channel banner 1 Press the INFO button. The channel banner displays the program title and time of the currently tuned program. 2 To browse other program title and times, use the arrow buttons as shown below: Press this button To browse program titles in the channel banner for The channel that is one channel up from the current channel The channel that is one channel down from the current channel The program scheduled after the program shown in the channel banner The program scheduled previous to the program shown in the channel banner 3 To tune to a channel shown in the channel banner, press the SELECT button. The following procedure describes how to display the channel banner and how to browse program title and time information in the channel banner. Note: The channel banner automatically displays when you change channels. 4 To exit browse mode, press the C button. The channel banner displays the current program s title and time. 5 To exit the channel banner, press the INFO button. The channel banner disappears. Note: If you do not exit the channel banner, it automatically disappears after several seconds. 5
11 Getting Started Displaying and browsing QuickInfo Displaying and browsing QuickInfo TV Navigator provides QuickInfo for channels to give you quick access to program descriptions, programs start and end times. QuickInfo shows the following information: The channel logo, number, and call letters The program title, start time, and end time The current time Passport symbols where appropriate (for example, the star symbol for a favorite channel) The program s rating The program description You can browse QuickInfo this allows you to continue watching the current program while checking program information for other channels and other times. The following procedure describes how to display QuickInfo and how to browse program descriptions in QuickInfo. To display QuickInfo 1 Press the INFO button. The channel banner displays the program title and time of the currently selected program. 2 Press the INFO button again. QuickInfo appears, displaying the current program information. 4 To browse other program title and times, use the arrow buttons as shown below: Press this button To browse program titles in QuickInfo for The channel that is one channel up from the current channel The channel that is one channel down from the current channel The program scheduled after the program shown in QuickInfo The program scheduled previous to the program shown in QuickInfo 5 To select to a channel shown in QuickInfo, press the SELECT button. 6 To exit browse mode, press the C button. 12 Getting Started Understanding TV Navigator symbols Understanding TV Navigator symbols This symbol Indicates There are several symbols that you may see in TV Navigator, for example, in the program guide. The table below lists the symbols and describes each symbol. A program with secondary audio viewers can choose to hear audio in another language This symbol Indicates A program blocked by channel, rating, or time period with parental control currently enabled A program blocked by channel, rating, or time period with parental control currently disabled A program that will be recorded a VCR timer has been set to record this program A program that has been purchased A program with a reminder timer A channel marked as a favorite channel A program with stereo sound A program with closed caption information (subtitles for hearing-impaired viewers) 7
13 Using the Program Guide TV Navigator includes the program guide to give you an overview of what is playing on different channels during the day. From the program guide, you can select programs to watch, record, or purchase. The figure below shows the program guide. Displaying the program guide To display the program guide Press the GUIDE button. The program guide displays the time grid. The current program is highlighted in the time grid. Tuning to a program from the program guide To tune to a program from the program guide 1 In the program guide, press the up, down, left, or right arrow buttons to highlight the program you want to tune to. 2 Press the SELECT button to tune to the program. The program guide disappears and the selected program appears. The program guide shows you: The currently tuned channel in the upper right-hand corner with the current time, channel call letters, and channel number The channel logo, name, and number for the currently selected program in the upper left-hand corner Note: If the program you tuned is a future program (one that is not playing currently), you see a message asking you if you want to record the program, set a reminder timer, or to cancel the attempt (exit). Press the button indicated for the option you want. The title, start and ending time, and a brief description of the currently selected program The time grid or a list of programs by theme or title Note: As shown in the figure above, there are sometimes symbols in the program description. For an explanation of these symbols, refer to page 8. 8
14 Using the Program Guide Viewing more information about a program Viewing more information about a program You can use the program guide to get additional information about a program. The screen below shows an example of additional information in the program guide. Displaying information for a few days ahead You can display programming information in the program guide for up to a week ahead. The procedure below describes how you can quickly display information without scrolling through the program guide day by day. To display information for a few days ahead 1 In the program guide, press the number button for the number of days out, that indicates the day you want to view information for. For example, if today is Wednesday and you want to see programming information for Saturday, press 3. (Saturday is three days ahead of Wednesday.) To get more information about a program 1 In the program guide, press the arrow buttons to find the program for which you want more information. 2 Make sure the program is highlighted, and then press the INFO button. TV Navigator displays an extended description of the selected program. 3 To return to the program guide, press the C button. 2 Press the right arrow button. The program guide displays the programming information for the day you selected. To redisplay the information for today, do either of the following: Press the number button you pressed in step 1 and press the left arrow button. Press the GUIDE button to exit the program guide and press the GUIDE button again to display the program guide. Please note: if you scroll too quickly through the program guide, the words No Data may appear. Wait just a few seconds and the programming information will return. 9
15 Using the Program Guide Displaying the program guide by theme Displaying the program guide by theme To display the program guide by theme 1 In the program guide, press the B button. A list of themes appears for you to select from. 2 Press the up or down arrow button to scroll through the list of themes. To jump from one theme category to another, press the B button. 3 To scroll through the list of programs, press the right arrow button to highlight the list of programs, then press the up or down arrow button to scroll. Programs that are currently playing are marked by a dot in front of the program title. Exiting the program guide To exit the program guide Press the GUIDE button. For each theme selected, the program guide displays all available programs for that theme to the right. 3 To scroll through the list of programs, press the right arrow button to highlight the list of programs, then press the up or down arrow button to scroll. Programs that are currently playing are marked by a dot in front of the program name. Displaying the program guide by title To display the program guide by title 1 In the program guide, press the C button. An alphabetical list of letters appears. 2 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the first letter of the program title you want view to information for. The program guide shows all program titles that start with the letter you selected. 10
16 Choosing Quick Settings TV Navigator provides the Quick Settings menu to let you do the following quickly and easily: Activate parental control Make a channel a favorite Record a channel immediately Play secondary audio Activate the sleep timer The figure below shows the Quick Settings menu. Choosing quick settings To choose quick settings 1 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the setting you want to activate or deactivate. 2 To change a setting from NO to YES, press the left arrow button. 3 To change a setting from YES to NO, press the right arrow button. Note: From the Quick Settings menu, you can display the General Settings menu by pressing the A button. For information about the General Settings menu, refer to page 12 Exiting the Quick Settings menu To exit the Quick Settings menu Displaying the Quick Settings menu Press the C button. 17 Choosing General Settings This general setting Lets you TV Navigator provides the General Settings menu to let you tailor TV Navigator to your needs. The figure below shows the General Settings menu. VCR timer Specify channels, dates and times to be recorded (refer to page 16) Power-on timer Specify the channel, day(s), and time you want the cable settop (digital terminal) to turn on automatically Power-off timer Specify the day(s) and time you want the cable settop (digital terminal) to turn off automatically The table below shows all the options you can specify in the General Settings menu and gives a brief description of each option. What options are available depends on your cable company. This displays the Quick Settings menu. The figure below shows the SETTINGS button. 2 Press the A button. The General Settings menu displays. A message shows a description of the setting. 3 To exit the help message, press the C button. Exiting the General Settings menu To exit the General Settings menu Press the EXIT button. The General Settings menu disappears and you return to the channel you were watching. To choose general settings 1 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the general settings option you want to specify. 2 Press the right arrow button. The settings for the selection appear in a column to the right. 3 Press the up or down arrow button to select the setting you want to specify. For multiple columns, press the right arrow button to access the columns. 14
20 Recording Programs Using Parental Control When recording, always make sure VCR is ON and tuned to channel 3, with a blank tape inserted. Selecting a future program to record from the program guide To record a future program press, highlight the progam and press. Press to Set VCR Tuner. Press again to accept reminder. Then program your VCR manually to record channel 3 at the proper time. TV Navigator provides you with parental control to allow you to restrict viewing of certain channels, ratings, and programs during certain time periods. When you tune to a blocked item when parental control is activated, a screen appears informing you that the channel or program is blocked. Only those household members who know the blocking PIN can bypass this screen and view blocked channels or programs. To set up parental control, you do the following: 1 Specify which channels, ratings, and times you want to block. 2 Activate parental control and enter your blocking PIN. If you do not activate parental control, all channels, ratings and times are available to all household members. The General Settings menu appears. 3 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Blocked Channels or Blocked Ratings option. 4 Press the right arrow button. A list of channels or ratings appears. 6 To block the highlighted channel or rating, press the SELECT button. This adds the channel or ratings to the list of blocked channels or ratings. 7 To block additional items, return to step 4. 8 To exit the General Settings menu, press the EXIT button. 9 To activate parental control, see the next page. Blocking time periods To block time periods 1 Press the SETTINGS button. The Quick Settings menu appears. 2 Press the A button. The General Settings menu appears. 3 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Blocked Time option. 4 Press the right arrow button. A screen similar to the one below appears. Channels or ratings that are currently blocked have a locked or unlocked symbol. The screen also shows a list of currently blocked items. 5 Press the up or down arrow buttons to highlight the channel or rating you want to block. 5 Press the up arrow button to highlight the On option. 16
22 Using Parental Control Activating parental control 6 Press the right arrow button to move to the Day, Start or Stop column. 7 For the Day, Start, or Stop column, press the up or down arrow button to enter the day(s), hour, minute, and AM or PM for the time period. You can also use numbered buttons in the Start and Stop columns. 8 When you have specified the time period, press the A button. This adds a new option called Blocked Time with a number, for example Blocked Time 1. 9 To specify additional time periods, return to step 2. You can specify up to four blocked time periods. 10 To exit the General Settings menu, press the EXIT button. 11 To activate parental control, refer to the next column. To Block Adult Orientated Titles and Descriptions To block adult-oriented titles and descriptions 1 Press the SETTINGS button. The Quick Settings menu appears. 6 Press the up arrow button to highlight the Enable option. 7 Press the A button to enable title blocking. You return to the Preference column. 8 To exit the General Settings menu, press the EXIT button. 9 To activate parental control, refer to the section below. Activating parental control Before you activate parental control, you must have specified which channels, ratings, or time periods you want to block. For information, refer to page 16. To activate parental control 1 Press the SETTINGS button. The Quick Settings menu appears. Please note that the BLOCKING PIN (Personal Identification Number) on your digital terminal has been pre-set to To change your blocking PIN, see the instructions on page Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Activate Parental Control option. 2 Press the A button. The General Settings menu appears. 3 Press the PAGE or + button repeatedly to move to the Parental Control category. 4 Press the down arrow button to highlight the Blocked Titles preference. 5 Press the right arrow button. 17
23 Using Parental Control Disabling parental control 3 Press the left arrow button to change the setting from NO to YES. A screen appears asking you to enter your blocking PIN. To disable parental control 1 Press the SETTINGS button. The Quick Settings menu displays. 2 Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Activate Parental Control option. 4 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your blocking PIN. A message confirms that all channel, time, and rating blocks are now active. 5 Press the A button to accept the message. The Quick Settings menu disappears and parental control is now activated. Disabling parental control You can disable (deactivate) parental control just for the channel you re watching or for all channels, ratings, and time periods. This procedure disables parental control until you turn the cable settop (digital terminal) off and on; parental control then activates again automatically. To disable parental control permanently, you disable the blocking PIN. For information, refer to Changing your blocking PIN on page Press the right arrow button to change the setting from YES to NO. If you get a message asking if you want to unblock this channel only or all channels, press the A button to unblock only the channel you are watching; press the B button to unblock all channels and deactivate parental control. A screen asks you to enter your blocking PIN. 4 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your blocking PIN. If you are disabling parental control for the current channel only, the TV now shows the channel. If you are disabling parental control for all channels, ratings, and time periods, a message confirms that parental control is now disabled, and all blocked channels, ratings, and time periods are now unblocked. 5 Press the A button to accept the message. You return to the currently tuned channel. 18
24 Using Parental Control Changing your blocking PIN Disabling parental control temporarily for a single blocked channel To disable parental control temporarily for a single blocked channel 1 Tune to the blocked channel you want to watch. A black screen indicates the channel has been blocked from viewing due to a channel block. If this channel is blocked due to a rating or time block, you cannot disable parental control for this channel only; you must disable it for all channels, ratings, and times. 2 Press the SETTINGS button on the remote. The Quick Settings menu displays. 3 Press the up and down browse arrow buttons on the remote to highlight the Activate Parental Control option. 4 Press the right browse arrow button to change the setting from YES to NO. The following message appears: 7 Press the A button accept the message. The message disappears and the channel now shows the program. Parental control stays active for all the other blocked channels, ratings, and times. Changing your blocking PIN To change your blocking PIN 1 On the remote, press the SETTINGS button. The Quick Settings menu appears. 2 Press the A button. The General Settings menu appears. Please note that the BLOCKING PIN (Personal Identification Number) on your digital terminal has been pre-set to Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the blocking PIN option. 5 Press the A button to disable the current channel only. A message appears asking you to enter your blocking PIN. 6 Press the number buttons on the remote to enter the four numbers of your blocking PIN. A message indicates that the channel has been temporarily unblocked. 4 In the State Column, check if the blocking PIN is enabled. If it is, go to step 10. If it is disabled, go to the next step. 5 To enable the blocking PIN, press the right arrow button to move to the State column. 19
25 Using Parental Control Changing your blocking PIN 6 Press the up arrow button to highlight the Enable option. 7 Press the SELECT button to enable the current blocking PIN. A screen appears asking you to enter your blocking PIN. Purchasing Video-on-Demand 8 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your blocking PIN. A message confirms that all blocking now requires you to enter the blocking PIN. 9 Press the A button to accept the message. 10 To change your blocking PIN, press the right arrow button. 11 Press the up arrow button to highlight the Change option. 12 Press the SELECT button. A screen asks you to enter your current blocking PIN. 13 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your blocking PIN. The screen asks you to enter your new PIN. 14 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your new blocking PIN. The screen asks you to re-enter your new PIN. 15 Press the number buttons to re-enter the four numbers of your new blocking PIN. The screen confirms that your blocking PIN has been changed. How To Order 1. Tune to the On Demand channel you wish to view (see list on next page). Make sure the VCR/VOD switch in the lower right corner of your Digital remote is set to VOD. 2. Use the right/left arrows on your remote control to choose a programming category. 3. Use the up/down arrows to view the list of programs in that category. 4. Highlight the program or movie you wish to view. For Pay Per View Movies On Demand, press B to buy. For all other On Demand channels press play. You can control your On Demand selection using the controls at the bottom of your Digital remote, including pause, rewind, fast forward, play and stop. 16 Press the A button to accept the message. The General Settings menu displays the Blocking PIN option as enabled. 20

To change your Purchase PIN, press and then to highlight Change. 6. Press and enter 1234 (or your current PIN). 7. Enter your new PIN, then re-enter it when prompted. 8. Press and your new Purchase PIN is registered. For detailed instructions for displaying the General Settings menu, refer to page Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the purchase PIN option. The screen shows whether the PIN is enabled or disabled. 7 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your purchase PIN. A message confirms that a PIN is required for all purchasing. 8 Press the A button to accept the message. 9 To change your purchase PIN, press the right arrow button. 10 Press the up arrow button to highlight the Change option. 11 Press the SELECT button. A screen asks you to enter your current purchase PIN. 12 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your purchase PIN. The screen asks you to enter the number for your new PIN. 13 Press the number buttons to enter the four numbers of your new purchase PIN. 3 Check if the purchase PIN is enabled. If it is, go to step 10. If it is disabled, go to the next step. 4 To enable the purchase PIN, press the right arrow button. You move to the State column. 5 Press the up arrow button to highlight the Enable option. 6 Press the SELECT button to enable the current purchase PIN. A screen asks you to enter your current purchase PIN. The screen asks you to re-enter the number for your new PIN. 14 Press the number buttons to re-enter the four numbers of your new purchase PIN.
