7 Auswertungsteil der offenen Fragen Prof. Dr. Daniel Becker, The Economics of European Integration. Concluding questions.) <label>do you have comments about the general conditions of this course? (for example. Number of students, lecture structure, exam, overlapping, continuity, punctuality of the lecturer)</label> - - it s impossible to plan the amount of work in the semester: it was announced that there is a final exam, but in the end there was also an essay and for Master students a full paper. An announcement BEFORE the course in order to plan the semester would have been very helpful. Surely we have other courses to prepare and other papers to write... - I don't feel well prepared for the fina exam, there should have been a worksheet since weeks or so but until now we have not gotten anything like that Frustration about participants of the course, different level of knowledge of the subject as students came from different study programs. Lecturer was trying to make it understandable for both, in the end it were students who had a major disadvantage. I found the professor rather unprepared for lecture, he didn't adapt the textbook slides to the course and did not edit them for errors. Sometimes when students participated or asked questions he would not provide a clear answer. As well, he did not seem to care about the students, specifically stated he did not want to use his office hours for us but for students in another course of his. Due to his attitude and poor presentation of the course work, I found I learned much more by reading the textbook and other materials in my own time then when I attended lecture. Insgesamt hätte die Vorlesung klarer strukturiert sein müssen; zwar ist es sehr angenehm, dass Sie auf die Studenten eingehen, doch müssten sie einen besseren Mix zwischen eigener Linie und Studentenfreundlichkeit finden. Dadurch würden Sie sich besonders auch Ihr eigenes Leben einfacher machen (zb klare Ansage wg Essays - damit hätten Sie h vor Abgabe keine Fragen mehr beantworten müssen) Wie immer haben Sie sich viel Mühe gegeben, was Ihnen hoch anzurechnen ist, aber leider hat die Vorlesung erst in den letzten beiden Wochen wirklich neue Erkenntnisse gebracht, vorher war vieles einfache Wiederholung ohne große Verbindung zum Hauptthema. Struture was clear but nothing specified to be able to prepare for the clases The lecturer does not give any useful information about the structure of the exam. Call backs from the audience make him insecure. He should perform more competent. Wahrscheinlich wäre es sinnvoller gewesen die Veranstaltung mal pro Woche 90 Minuten lang zu halten anstatt mal Minuten, mal abgesehen davon, dass dadurch die Mittagspause für die Studenten garantiert wäre, sind mal 90 Minuten auch für den Dozenten wohl einfacher vorzubereiten. not clear what the exam will be like. too much content of the lectures, hard to learn. lecturer shoule be more confident. great idea to ask for essays instead of a long exam!.) <label>do you have accolade, criticism or suggestions for improvement of the lecture or this evaluation questionary?</label> I am highly disappointed of the english skills of the lecturer. Because of the fact, that they are not as good, explainations could not clearly be made. It is hard to follow his class, due to the described. I had to do assignments like essays only abroad and I like it since you really have to get into the material to understand it. That is how I learn much more and it doesn't feel like only learning for the exam. Another good thing is the interactive lecture. The lecturer asked for the students demands and combined them with his own idea how the lecture should be. Very good lecturer! Keep up the good work! I never understand the sense of "interdisciplinary working" I think that concerning this course, the university should be aware of the diversity among it's students, as there are three types of students I noticed while in the class. The first being full-time students who study economics and have a good understanding of basic economic principles. The second group would be full-time students not in economy however have a really strong knowledge of the structure of the European Union. Finally the third group - the exchange students who may only have a basic knowledge of economics and little to no knowledge of the EU (depending on the country of origin). I realize that this may be a problem in other class due to Viadrina being so international, however I found with such a diverse group of students in such a specific course, the professor struggled with who he would cater to and the outline of what would be included in the course and what wouldn't was slightly confusing for me as he tried to adapt to certain groups needs. It s a shame for the whole faculty that a professor teaches a clas in english who has not enough language knowledge to explain even the simplest facts. He could not answer the questions he was ask. Besides his bad english skills the professsor teached simple micro and macro economics WRONG and then he admitted that he has no clue about it and told us that we better should read the book. --> why do we have lecture if we better learn it on our own to avoid the risk to get wrong informations. Might be that it is hard to find a professor for economics but to have one like him makes students ask if they better should change the EvaSys Auswertung Seite 7

8 university. Leider wurde in der Veranstaltung nur sehr wenig das Thema Europa behandelt und hauptsächlich auf bekannte Makro/Mikro-Modelle eingegangen. Auch war oft kein klarer Faden in der Veranstaltung zu erkennen und alles recht konfus. Für die nächste Veranstaltung würde ich mir wünschen, dass viel stärker auf das Thema Europa eingegangen wir und die Veranstaltung einem klaren Konzept folgt.
