12 REGIONAL OVERVIEW NORTHERN WV OVERVIEW Brooke County, West Virginia, is situated in the Northern panhandle with the city of Beech Bottom centrally located between the Ohio River and WV Rt. 2, approximately 10 miles north of I-70. The location is within a 50-mile radius of Pittsburgh, PA, and Morgantown WV. These cities are rich in educational and medical facilities, transportation hubs and both enjoy diverse populations. Marcellus and Utica Shale The Marcellus and Utica Shale geologic formations run deep below the surface of eastern Ohio, West Virginia and parts of Pennyslvania. The presence of both wet and dry gas in the region has generated the interest of energy companies nationwide. These companies have leased land and are now drilling horizontally and vertically using the new hydraulic fracturing method developed as a result of recent advances in drilling technology numbers show 1,979 completed wells and an additional 954 active permits in West Virginia, these counts continue to grow monthly. The gas from these wells, combined with coal, oil and other alternative sources, have made West Virginia the fourth-leading electricity exporter in the nation. In the heart of the shale territory, West Virginia has moved swiftly to enable the development of the oil and gas industry. The state passed the Manufacturing and Development Act, which is aggressive legislation to attract ethane Cracker plants and other facilities related to energy production. The state is ranked sixth out of 135 international areas for Most Attractive Jurisdictions for Oil and Gas Investment. Additionally, there is nearly $2.5 billion slated for expansion of transport and processing natural gas. Industry related to the Marcellus formation is estimated to bring 50,000 jobs to West Virginia over the next 20 years. Affordable The WV panhandle counties measure 10% - 15% less than the U.S. average when comparing competitive labor, utilities and total annual costs. The same counties are 25% - 30% less than major urban centers. (Source: Deloitte Consulting Shared Services Capability Assessment ) These figures make the I-70 corridor an attractive region for existing and new companies to locate their operations. The housing market in West Virginia is ranked 6th in affordable housing costs with new and existing homes priced below the national average. Quality of Living West Virginia is home to an abundance of recreation attractions, including Oglebay Resort and Conference Center, Wheeling Island s greyhound racing and casino, Mountaineer Park offers thoroughbred racing and casino action. Outdoor activities include ski slopes, white water rafting and hiking. Regional hospitals include the Ohio Valley Medical Center with it s stat of the art cancer center and Wheeling Hospital, which is ranked in the top ten percentile for cardiac care. National crime statistics show that this area is one of the nations safest, the FBI Uniform Crime Statistics ranks the area as the second lowest in the country. REGIONAL OVERVIEW 12
13 REGIONAL OVERVIEW PITTSBURGH, PA OVERVIEW The Pittsburgh MSA has a population of 2.4 million the 22nd largest metro area in the U.S. making it the 2nd largest city in Pennsylvania. Historically viewed as an industrial giant in the production of steel, iron, aluminum and glass, Pittsburgh has gone through a major renaissance to become America s Most Livable City (Forbes, 2010; The Economist, 2009; Places Rated Almanac, 2007) and is now considered one of the most attractive larger cities to live and conduct business. Pittsburgh fares well as a Fortune 500 headquarters city compared with other larger cities. Compared to Pittsburgh s eight Fortune 500 companies, Denver and Washington, DC, each have three; Philadelphia has six; San Francisco has seven; and Chicago, nine. The region is the nation s center for nuclear engineering and has a diversified and balanced economy that emphasizes technology, world-renowned healthcare and outstanding universities. Recently, there has been a resurgence of some of Pittsburgh s major industrial corporations (such as U.S. Steel, Westinghouse and Consol) as well as growth of many small and mid-sized companies. It is because of this diversified economy that analysts are predicting an incremental population increase in Pittsburgh over the next 20 years, gaining 126,000 residents by Marcellus and Utica Shale Pittsburgh may always be known as a Steel Town, but today the Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling activities are a large influence on the regions economy. More than 150 companies have expanded in the region since this includes exploration, drilling and service operations. Economic activity attributed to the natural gas industry reached $5.4 billion, with 400 establishments employing nearly 38,000 people directly and indirectly, and more growth is anticipated. Technology Things like bytes and bots and bioengineering are helping drive Pittsburgh s economy. The Pittsburgh region boasts more than 8,438 technology and related companies, making it one of the largest technology hubs in the nation. These high-tech companies employ more than 248,000 individuals and account for 19.4% of the area s overall workforce. This translates into 27.5% of the region s total annual wages or a $14.5 billion total annual payroll! Six key industry clusters exist within the technology community in the Pittsburgh region: Information Technology, Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Materials, Environmental Technology and Energy Technology. An emerging market within these clusters includes the exploration and development of the Marcellus Shale gas field. Marcellus Shale development is helping Southwestern Pennsylvania establish itself as the energy innovation capital of the world. Little regarded five years ago, Marcellus Shale which sprawls across more than half of Pennsylvania and underlies Pittsburgh is now viewed as one of the world s leading reservoirs of recoverable natural gas. By 2020, Marcellus development could add $13.5 billion to Pennsylvania s economy and create more than 176,000 new jobs. Higher Education Pittsburgh offers an abundant talent pipeline from its 35 colleges and universities, which produce 31,000 graduates per year. The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) are among the four-year colleges located in the area that attract students from around the globe. The University of Pittsburgh has evolved into an internationally recognized center of learning and research with 12,000 employees and 34,000 students. The University of Pittsburgh ranks among the top universities nationally in terms of annual research support awarded by the National Institutes of Health. Carnegie Mellon has emerged as a global research university of more than 10,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff.
