1 the dayton region where innovation and industry meet More than meets the eye. The Dayton Region is a diverse, 14-county region. Located at the crossroads of the nation s interstate highway system, it s within 90 minutes by air to more than half of the combined population of the U.S. and Canada and 75% of the U.S. workforce. Also within that 600 mile radius, are the headquarters of 74 of the nation s Fortune 100 companies and 344 of the Fortune 500 companies. The 90-minute market is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to access, industry, and opportunity. From Wright- Patterson Air Force Base to high-growth industry to colleges and universities, the Dayton Region is a vibrant, active community that is ready to meet your business needs.
2 We have something for everyone. The Dayton Region has big city amenities with a small town, Midwestern feel. Collectively, our 14-county region is home to 1.8 Million citizens and thousands of companies. Compared to the rest of the country, Dayton s cost of living is 27% lower than the U.S. average, the region is home to nationally acclaimed arts and entertainment, the largest aerospace and aviation museum in the world is in the region s backyard. From small business research and development to world-class academic institutions, Dayton Region s future is bright and getting brighter every day. Here are just some highlights of the region s amenities and future growth and development: The Greene: Dayton s first innovative town center with residential areas, retail, and office space. More than 500,000 monthly visitors take advantage of the 1.1 million sq ft development The Dayton Dragons: one of Sports Illustrated Top Ten Hottest Tickets, the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team holds the record for the most consecutive sell outs in North America National Museum of the United States Air Force: the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world with 17 acres of exhibit space. More than 1.2 Million people visit the museum each year The Dayton Art Institute: rated among the 10 best art museums for children. It ranked 3rd in the nation behind The Art Institute of Chicago and New York s Museum of Modern Art. Their collection spans 5,000 years of art history The Schuster Performing Arts Center: represents the cornerstone of Downtown Dayton s renaissance and is recognized as the premiere acoustically perfect performance hall in the country Fraze Pavilion: southwestern Ohio s premiere outdoor entertainment venue, is ranked among the top 25 amphitheaters in the world. The 4,300-seat venue is celebrating its 20th season of hosting national and international headline artists
3 Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) is the region s largest employer and the state of Ohio s largest single-site employer. It creates as many jobs as the second, third and fourth largest Dayton-based employers combined. WPAFB is, by many measures, the largest and most diverse Air Force installation. With a major command headquarters, nine primary missions and 60 tenant units, the base composition can be difficult to comprehend. The community has come to think of the base as a medium-size city with its own airport. 88th Air Base Wing = city management and mayor Air Force Materiel Command = a Fortune 40 company Aeronautical Systems Center = a Fortune 135 company Air Force Institute of Technology = a STEM focused university National Air and Space Intelligence Center = a major IT company Enterprise Logistics Directorate = a major software company 445th Airlift Wing = an international airline National Museum of the U.S. Air Force = a Smithsonian museum Air Force Security Assistance Center = an international company Air Force Research Laboratory = 5 university research institutes Wright-Patterson AFB Economic Impact TOTAL JOBS >60,469 TOTAL ANNUAL PAYROLL >$3.4 BILLION ANNUAL EXPENDITURES >$1.7 BILLION NUMBER OF RETIREES >20,000 RETIREE DISBURSEMENTS >$560 MILLION GRP (Gross Regional Product) 10.5% direct contribution BOTTOM LINE $5.7 BILLION ECONOMIC IMPACT This concentration of air power and policy has created a testbed for aerospace and aeronautical research, development, test, evaluation and acquisition. The Air Force Research Laboratory s (AFRL) R&D budget alone is nearly twice the R&D investment made by all Ohio Academic and public institutions. Top 15 SBIR/STTR States, 2001 to 2010 Additionally, federal agencies have invested $1.09 billion in Ohio (in millions) small businesses over the last ten years through Small Business $4,000 Phase I Phase II Innovative Research and Small Business Technology Transfer $3,500 (SBIR/STTR) contracts. This engine for innovation is driving the region s technology commercialization initiatives and venture capital $3,000 investments. $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000 $500 The combined strength of AFRL and the Aeronautical Systems Center offers cradle to grave program management requiring a workforce of more than 10,000 and regular travel to contractor locations. $- CA MA VA MD NY CO TX OH PA NJ WA FL MI AL NC
4 The Dayton Region s strategic industries drive innovation and job growth. The region has four driver industries: Aerospace Systems, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, Information Technology and Human Sciences. Cross-cutting to all the strategic industries are Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). A LQ of 1.00 is the national average, a number that is higher than that shows a greater specialization of the industry hese driver industries are foundational to the region s These driver industries are foundational to the region s Gross Regional Product (GRP) and are growing in job creation and concentration. The combined contribution of these industries is $5 Billion to just the MSA comprising only four of the region s 14 counties. The UAS industry is projected to grow to a $31 Billion industry over the next 10 years. The Dayton Region is pursuing initiatives that will secure FAA approved airspace, attract aerospace research, development, test and evaluation companies, and assist the military in meeting their mission requirements. The region s goal is to become a test bed for UAS integration into national airspace and to become the national center for UAS and aerospace research, development, acquisition and commercialization. 5 Commercial business attraction has taken off in the Dayton Region. Over the last four years, the Dayton MSA has garnered two first place finishes and two strong second place positions in Site Selection s list of the fastest growing metros. And the rest of the region has been just as busy. From 2008 to 2010, the region has reported more than 200 commercial recruitment and expansion projects that created nearly 11,000 direct jobs, $1.2 billion in capital investment and 6.8 Million square feet of commercial expansion. COMMERCIAL RECRUITMENT AND EXPANSION PROJECT CONCENTRATION, Auglaize From the available workforce to logistics and distribution access to the region s research parks, the Dayton Region is attracting commercial growth. 6 Education is a top priority as the region develops the workforce needed to support the defense missions and the driver industries. Within the 14-county region alone, Dayton is home to 25 national recognized colleges and universities. If you expand the radius to 50 miles, that number increases to 121 degree granting institutions. These institutions attract in-state and out of state students and international students. Over a four year period more than 6,500 students traveled from all over the world to attend schools in the Dayton Region. Within the 50-mile radius an additional 7,500 traveled to attend institutions in Cincinnati, Columbus and eastern Indiana.
