Instructor Information Name: Rita Daniel, BS; M Ed; DC Adjunct Instructor Office Hours: By appointment rita.daniel@tstc.edu Skype Office Hours By Appointment Department Chair: Troy Williamson (troy.williamson@tstc.edu) II. Class Time & Location This is an online class, and the entirety of the course content will be conducted through the Moodle learning management system. The Mid-term and Final Exam are proctored examination. III. Course Description & Introduction Study of the structure and function of human anatomy, including the neuroendocrine, integumentary, musculoskeletal, digestive, urinary, reproductive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Content may be either integrated or specialized. IV. Learning Outcomes A. Describe the flow of information within the cell and between cells. B. Describe the regulation of cellular activities including communication, growth, division, metabolism and cellular energy production. C. Describe the four tissues that make up the human body and where they occur within each organ and organ system. D. Identify the components and functions of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. E. Describe the importance of homeostasis, its parameters for the human and the mechanisms used by each of the studied body systems to maintain it. Describe how attempts to maintain homeostasis by individual body systems affect the other body systems and processes.

3 Course Syllabus Page 3 F. Demonstrate the correct use of widely accepted anatomical and physiological terminology. G. Demonstrate and apply the concept that anatomical structure and physiology (function) are complimentary. H. Apply the above knowledge to problem-solving situations. V. Core Curriculum Objectives The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has established six Core Curriculum Objectives which apply to general academic courses. These objectives are: 1) Critical Thinking Skills (including creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and the analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of information); 2) Communication Skills (including the effective development, interpretation, and expression of ideas through written, oral, and visual communication); 3) Empirical and Quantitative Skills (including the manipulation and analysis of numerical data or observable facts, resulting in informed conclusions); 4) Teamwork (including the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal); 5) Social Responsibility (including intercultural competency, a knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities); and 6) Personal Responsibility (including the ability to connect choices, actions, and consequences to ethical decision-making). In keeping with the guidelines established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, this course (BIOL 2401) will address the following Core Curriculum Objectives: Critical Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Empirical and Quantitative Skills, and Teamwork. VI. Assessment Methods & Grading Policy All assignments for each week of study should be completed by Sunday. Grades will be posted the following Thursday of each week; if grades cannot be posted by that time, for some unexpected reason, students will be notified. Course grades will be derived from assignments in the following categories: s 10 point per week Examinations (Mid-Term and Final) 100 points per exam

4 Course Syllabus Page 4 s Lab s 100 points each 100 points each Points Grade A B C D Below F Total Points All grades for assignments will be posted in the grade book each week and will be listed under the following categories: 1. s Maximum points - 10 points each 2. Homework Maximum points points each 3. Lab s Maximum points 100 each 4. Mid-term Examination Maximum points points (proctored exam) 5. Final Examination Maximum points 100 points (proctored exam) The Total points will be based upon the number of assignments completed during the class and may change from the 3140 points that is listed in the syllabus. How your final grade will be calculated: Your final grade will be calculated by dividing the total points earned in class (total points will be listed in the grade book) divided by the total possible points for the class. You will find this information listed at the bottom of your grade book next to Course Total. Weekly Grading Schedule All grades will be completed and posted each Thursday in the grade book. An announcement and will be send when the weekly grades have been completed. (If this schedule changes I will post an announcement). You are encouraged to check your grades each week and contact me immediately with questions. I reserve the right not to go back pass one week to answer questions about past grades. To review your grades each week, simply click on the Grades link located on the left side of your window!
