COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will introduce students to the practice of dentistry and dental specialties. It covers topics such as: professional and legal responsibilities, the roles of the dental auxiliary, responsibilities of the dental assistant; including oral communications, written communications and psychology. The student shall learn patient and office personnel communication and relations, proper charting, record keeping and professionalism. VIII. REQUIRED TEXT: Doni L. 2 A. Critical Thinking: Analyze problems by differentiating fact from opinions, using evidence, and sound reasoning to specify multiple solutions and their consequences. B. Communication: Effectively communicate thoughts in a clear, well-organized manner to persuade, inform, and convey ideas in academic, work, family, and communiy settings. C. Ethics: Practice and demonstrate standards of personal and professional integrity, honesty and fairness. Students will apply ethical principles in submission of all college work. XII. PROGRAM STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: I. Professionalism The dental assisting students must appreciate their role as health professionals at the local, state, and national levels. Students will demonstrate the necessary knowledge and values in legal regulations and ethical issues for the practice of dental assisting. II. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention The dental assisting students will demonstrate competency in the performance and delivery of oral health promotion and disease prevention service in public health, private practice, and alternative settings. The dental assisting students will be able to apply principles in assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of treatment. The student must also be prepared to influence others to facilitiate access to care and services. III. Patient Care The dental assisting students will demonstrate a thorough foundation in the biomedical, clinical, and behavioral sciences to achieve successful patient treatment outcomes. Students will utilize critical thinking and sound clinical judgment and cultural sensitivity with patients. XIII. COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Course SLO #1: At the end of this course, the successful student will be able to apply knowledge and skills required to evaluate various components of the patient record. Assessment Method: Instructor will evaluate students through representative outside assignments such as online research and skills assessments in the textbook and supplemental workbook. -2-
3 Criterion Level: The students will complete each representative outside assignment at a passing level (75%) for this course SLO on the first attempt. Course SLO #2: At the end of this course, the successful student will utilize knowledge obtained to determine the different roles in dentistry and employ permitted duties of the dental assistant. Assessment Method: Instructor will evaluate students by means of multiple choice quizzes, midterm and final examinations. Criterion Level: Students will complete each quiz, and examinations at a passing level (75%) for this course SLO on the first attempt. XIV. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to discuss the historical importance of the dental assisting profession, and distinguish the various members of the dental team and scope of practice. The student will be able to explain what is the professional and legal aspects in dentistry; attitude, teamwork, confidentiality, personal qualities, and professional attire in the dental environment. The student will be able to relate the types of laws and legal aspects according to the American Dental Assisting Association, State Dental Practice Act, licensure and state board of dentistry, and identify Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The student will be able to describe the importance of scope of practice, and identify the responsibilities of the dental assistant. The student will be able to distinguish significant information on a medical history such as allergies, medications and medical conditions prior to dental treatment. The student will be able to review medical histories and evaluate forms, have awareness of allergies, assessment of periodontal lesions and evaluate information materials on a periodontal evaluation sheet. -3-
4 The student will be able to distinguish responsibilities toward patients: knowledge of health history, protocol for emergency visits and referrals, explanation of procedures, and post-operative care. The student will be able to arrange a dental chart using dental forms (medical, dental history and examination forms) and identify tooth surfaces and common materials seen in the oral cavity, apply symbols and dental abbreviations using professional terms. The student will be able to recognize and apply standards according to JACHO, OSHA, and OSAP in a dental setting. The student will be able to record periodontal conditions and dental restorative materials on a periodontal evaluation form. The student will be able to prepare armamentarium for vital signs and temperature. The student will identify systematic methods for dental material/supply inventory. XV. INSTRUCTION METHODOLOGIES: 1. Completion of all assignments within designated time framework Each assignment/project will receive an "A" grade if all components are completed according to all criteria given for the assignment/project and is turned in at due date. GRADING AND MAKE UP POLICIES: A midterm exam will be administered. This exam will have 40 multiple-choice questions. The midterm exam content will be largely based on lectures and assigned reading. A final exam will be administered. This exam will consist of fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and written questions. The final exam content will be comprehensive of the semester s course content. Make up: Students are expected to take the exams on the date given. If for any reason a student cannot attend on the exam date, he or she must notify the instructor prior to the due date of the project or the date of the examination. If the student fails the midterm exam, remediation will be given in the form of outlining the chapter(s), researching content on the specific subject(s), and then taking a similar midterm exam. If the student does not pass the exam after remediation, the grade will stand. No 2 nd final exam will be given. The student must pass the final exam with a C or better in order to pass the class.
