2 Who We Are There is a magic, an exhilaration, and a potent significance that comes from knowing you ve made an impact in someone s life. In 1997, my husband Austin and I founded Adventure Links with a resolute passion that profound experiences can uncover courage, build community, and inspire connection. The dream was built alongside the depth of patience we were granted from our two daughters (with TWO entrepreneurs as parents)! They now relish in their Adventure Links experiences and know, firsthand, the significance of building this community and family. We proudly embark on our 19th year of Adventure Links and thank our community of dedicated followers and impassioned staff who possess an artful ability to reach the hearts and adventurous spirits of thousands to truly make a difference. This is our life s purpose and we are privileged to have found it! -Anna Birch, Founder & CEO Adventure Links programs strive to challenge the individual, develop teamwork and empower the participant to protect the environment. We create a positive learning culture, and challenge ourselves to be on the forefront of outdoor educational practices. Our staff is motivated to educate youth in the outdoors. They create experiences that provide the back-drop for individual and team development through the use of high adventure, environmental, and team building activities during our summer camps. 12 Leadership In Training Our new LIT program provides an exciting opportunity for returning campers grades 10-12, through an immersive experience in leadership and group management. Following an initial three day training, LITs will participate and assist with a residential camp of their choosing. With the conclusion of their camp session, LITs will receive a feedback session with their instructors. Primary Responsibilities: Under the supervision of Adventure Links Lead Instructors, lead on-site activities for campers age 8 13 Provide supervision and guidance for campers throughout their camp experience. Assist Instructors with camp preparation, facilitation, and clean-up Assist with facility maintenance as necessary Specific responsibilities will be determined based on the specific camp session
13 Meet Our Camp Director Ryan Dale The main reason that I have chosen to step into the role of summer camp director is that I love the impact that we have on our campers throughout the time they spend with us at summer camp. I believe in the power of facilitation in the sense that people are more inclined to making sustainable changes within themselves when they are guided to a conclusion instead of told what to change. We, at Adventure Links, excel at catalyzing those personal changes all while having fun. -Ryan Dale, Summer Camp Director How long have you worked for Adventure Links? Two years in March. Where s home? I have been lucky enough to find a lot of places throughout my life that I consider home, but Virginia will always be my favorite. What are you looking forward to most this summer? I am most excited about watching our campers during our redeveloped residential camp program. We are putting a lot of time into making sure that our residential camp experience is the absolute best. What s your favorite outdoor activity? My favorite outdoor activity is sailing. Lasers, C-420, V15 s, J-22 s, Hobie Cats, Beneteau 46 s and even canoes with shirts as sails, it doesn t matter, I want to sail it. What s a fun fact about you? I once shook the mummified hand of a man who fought in the Crusades.
14 Frequently Asked Questions Are you accredited? Yes. The American Camping Association, a nationally recognized certifying body, accredits Adventure Links. How are my children transported? Participants are transported by both van and mini-bus. All drivers are screened and must be approved by our insurance company. All of our drivers are required to complete a supplemental Adventure Links driver training program. Adventure Links strictly adheres to regulations set forth by the Virginia Department of Transportation. What are your staff s qualifications? Our lead instructors must be over the age of 21 years old, hold appropriate certifications, and are subject to pre-employment drug screening and background checks. Our assistant instructors must be over the age of 18, hold a current minimum certification in First Aid and CPR and are subject to pre-employment drug screening and background checks. All of our instructors are selected based on their skills in outdoor leadership and a high degree of commitment to working with youth. What is the ratio of campers to instructors? We maintain a ratio of 7:1 during Day Camps and approximately 6:1 during overnight programs. Is there any special equipment I need to buy for the trip? Campers must be prepared to bring the items listed on the pack list for their specific camp. This may include specific items such as backpacks, sleeping bags, or certain types of clothing. All other adventure equipment such as helmets, harnesses, or paddles will be supplied by Adventure Links. Can my child bring a cellular phone or other electronic device to camp? No. The Adventure Links camp program is designed to immerse campers into the natural environment and dynamics of the group experience. The use of these items is severely disruptive to maintaining this atmosphere. In the event of an emergency, the staff is instructed to maintain contact with the Adventure Links office and the parents of the camper. All summer camp policies can be found by going to: In cooperation with NOVA Parks
