Course Duration: Certificate III - one year full-time Diploma - 18 months full-time CERTIFICATE III IN (SIS30413) DIPLOMA OF (SIS50310) Avondale s Outdoor Recreation courses can provide you with professional training at Certificate III and Diploma levels in an exciting array of challenging adventure activities. The courses provide nationally recognised competency-based training qualifications which will equip you for employment in outdoor recreation, tourism and education sectors. Certificate III The Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation provides you with the skills to independently participate in and guide several outdoor recreation activities. Diploma The Diploma of Outdoor Recreation provides you with the professional competencies required to facilitate recreational experiences in a broad range of outdoor settings. The program provides a theoretical understanding of the physiological and psychological needs of clients required for safe leadership in remote wilderness environments. The Diploma builds on the Certificate III program and further extends the skills to guide and manage outdoor recreation programs. For this reason, the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation or a specified cluster of units from the Certificate III is a prerequisite of this course. 2 COURSE INFORMATION ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Entry into the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation or the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation requires that a student demonstrate they have an interest in outdoor pursuits or a formal outdoor recreation qualification at a lower AQF level and are physically and academically suited to the course. Specific course entry requirements are: A Senior Secondary Certificate of Education that has been awarded to the student by an agency or authority of a State or Territory for the student s completion of year 12; or both The student is assessed as displaying competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework* (ACSF) in both reading and numeracy; and Avondale reasonably believes that the student displays that competence. * To assess competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the ACSF the Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) will be applied. WHERE IT COULD TAKE YOU The Outdoor Recreation courses are designed to train you for employment in the following areas: Sport and recreation centres Wilderness adventure camping and tourism Guiding with commercial adventure-based operators Outdoor education and adventure therapy programs Commercial guiding and management Camping and outdoor recreation centres Youth at Risk programs Vocational training. Outdoor Recreation courses are also a pathway to further study in related higher education programs such as undergraduate education courses at Avondale or the Bachelor of Applied Science (Adventure Ecotourism) offered by Charles Sturt University (CSU). PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE The Outdoor Recreation courses are highly practical, with much of the instruction for both courses taking place in the field throughout Australia. Trips can range from excursions of a few hours in duration at local abseiling sites to extended expeditions in the high country of the Snowy Mountains. INDUSTRY PLACEMENT To help provide you with a thorough understanding of workplace operations and current methods of guiding and instructing, industry placements are built into your course. Participation requirements are as follows: Certificate III - minimum of 10 days of industry placement Diploma - minimum of 15 days The Course Convenor and training staff will assist in the organisation of this component. 2

5 COURSE INFORMATION EQUIPMENT AND ACTIVITY COSTS Avondale provides all abseiling and canoeing equipment, including personal flotation devices, canoes/kayaks, helmets, harnesses and safety gear. You are expected to provide: Camping essentials: personal effects, sleeping bag, stove and cooking equipment, torch, compass and First-aid kit Boots, waterproof jacket and other appropriate clothing Neoprene booties. PERSONAL INJURY INSURANCE While personal insurance is not compulsory, you may wish to obtain some level of coverage. ARTICULATION ARRANGEMENTS WITH CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY Formal articulation arrangements are in place for Avondale s Diploma of Outdoor Recreation graduates to gain one year of credit into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Adventure Ecotourism) offered by Charles Sturt University. Further details on this articulation arrangement are available at ACCREDITATION Avondale is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). The range of training packages Avondale has approval to offer can be viewed at The course provides nationally recognised competency-based training qualifications to the standard set by industry. All Outdoor Recreation courses are approved for Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy purposes. AUSTRALIAN CANOEING NATIONAL TRAINING PROVIDER (REG#014) As a National Training Provider, Avondale is entitled to train and assess candidates for all canoeing and kayaking awards up to level three. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) As neither the route nor the method of learning is considered in the assessment process for entry into Outdoor Recreation, Avondale takes into account a range of prior learning experience, including experiences other than those accredited by other registered providers. If you consider yourself to already possess the skills and knowledge necessary to be deemed competent in any learning outcome, you may have the opportunity to have this substantiated through formal qualifications or assessment via a bridging course prior to the commencement of the academic year. All units included in the course are nationally recognised and therefore if you have completed a recognised unit at another registered provider, you will be granted credit. For further information on specific credit, please contact the Outdoor Recreation Course Convenor, David Low at david.low@avondale.edu.au ADVANCED STANDING After successfully completing the Certificate III (or a specified cluster of units from the Certificate III) and the relevant core units from Certificate IV, you may gain direct entry into the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation. After successfully completing the Diploma of Outdoor Recreation, you will then be considered for advanced standing of up to one year of credit into undergraduate education courses at Avondale or the Bachelor of Applied Science (Adventure Ecotourism) offered by Charles Sturt University (CSU) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Overseas applicants will have their qualifications assessed by Avondale Admissions. Overseas applicants are also required to satisfy Australian Government visa requirements. DELIVERY APPROACHES Methods of teaching and learning include: Field trips Lectures and tutorials DVDs Case studies Demonstrations and scenarios. ASSESSMENT METHODS A wide range of methods are used to assess your performance.
