1 Summit National Training Center Combining world class Summit facilities with core values of Adventure, Service, Sustainability, and Leadership creates a unique learning environment to help you take your Scouting further! Outdoor training and education is the perfect opportunity to hone leadership skills, build confidence and learn skills to contribute to Scouting on a whole new level. Officially opening in 2016, The Summit National Training Center will offer some specialized leadership training and educational opportunities in DEVELOPMENT TRAINING COURSES NATIONAL ADVANCED YOUTH LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE (NAYLE) July & July 19 25, 2015 NAYLE is an outdoor leadership program designed to further expand on skills learned in the National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course offered by your local council. Some fun facts: Be there for the first NAYLE course to be held at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Use your NYLT Leadership skills while camping at the new BSA high adventure base in West Virginia. Explore The Summit while learning new ways to use your NYLT toolbox. Be one of the first Scouts to participate in a NAYLE program at the Summit. SUMMIT LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE July 12 18, 2015 This adult program is the culmination of expanding the leadership and servant leadership skills developed throughout your volunteerism with the Boy Scouts of America. The unique setting and activities at The Summit are the perfect place for Scout leaders to take their talents further. Requirements: Wood Badge, or NYLT staff experience. BSA Annual Health and Medical Record Parts A, B, C, and D.

2 GIS / ORIENTEERING July 12 18, 2015 You will learn everything you need to know to navigate the landscape using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. Also, you ll work on your orienteering skills for those times when map and compass are your only tools. UNIT KEY 3 RETREAT July 5 11 & July 19 25, 2015 The moment you arrive at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, you ll know you re in for an adventure of a lifetime! Build an effective leadership team within your Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Varsity Team while exploring the world class activity venues of The Summit. DISTRICT KEY 3 RETREAT July 5 11 & July 19 25, 2015 Similar to the Unit Key 3 opportunity, this exciting experience focuses on improving District Operations within your local council. Build relationships and your Scouting knowledge in The Summit s inspiring setting. WILDERNESS FIRST AID: INSTRUCTOR TRAINER DEVELOPMENT July 12 18, 2015 Using the wilderness setting of The Summit as a backdrop, learn to train those who are on the front lines of emergency care in remote settings. Take this training back to your local council or unit and help others learn wilderness first aid.

3 2015 ADVENTURE TRAINING COURSES These program experiences provide the fundamental knowledge and skills that serve as the basis for teaching and assisting others in adventure sports participation. Please note that these adventure training course require a minimum number of participants. If the minimum number is not reached, participants will be re assigned to their next available program choice. RIVER GUIDE SCHOOL The seven day program includes five days of training for prospective river guides. Topics and skills covered include: Hydrology River Terminology Reading the water Steering strokes Guide strategies for Class III & IV rapids How to rescue swimmers How to right a flipped raft How to unwrap a boat Strategies for self rescue How to swim rapids The program includes classroom time, swift water rescue training and several days of on thewater rafting culminating in guiding a raft through a Class IV rapid on the New River. Participants must be at least 16 years old, 56 inches tall and successfully complete the BSA Swim test. Please note that this is NOT a certification course, but does provide foundational skills for those who wish to pursue whitewater raft guiding as a hobby or vocation. MOUNTAIN BIKING INSTRUCTOR SCHOOL The seven day mountain biking instructor class includes five days of learning how to teach mountain biking skills, including proper body position, shifting, braking, climbing, cornering and

4 more. In addition, participants will learn how to prepare for a guided ride, assess participants and take participants through a guided mountain bike trek. Participants must be at least 16 years old and have intermediate mountain biking skills. This course can be especially helpful for individuals who want to assist councils in operating or creating a mountain biking program. SHOOTING SPORTS ACADEMY Gain the knowledge and skills to teach various shooting disciplines using NRA and NAA instructor qualification programs. Participants will develop skills to teach rifle, shotgun, muzzle loading rifle, pistol and archery. Participants who successfully complete the course can submit their course completion materials to the NRA and NAA to receive instructor credentials. The certification level depends on the participants age and test scores. All participants, regardless of age, may receive the NAA Level 1 Archery instructor designation. For NRA instructor disciplines, the following age guidelines apply: yrs old Apprentice Instructor yrs old Assistant Instructor 21+ yrs old Instructor Course will include: NRA Rifle Instructor NRA Shotgun Instructor NRA Muzzle loading Rifle Instructor NRA Pistol Instructor NAA Level 1 Archery Instructor AMGA SINGLE PITCH INSTRUCTOR If you are an experienced climber who wants to share your skills with others, the AMGA Single Pitch Climbing instructor course may be for you. You will spend two days climbing sport and traditional routes in the New River Gorge. Then, the next three days will focus on the skills of the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA)

5 Single Pitch Instructor program. In this course, you will learn the skills necessary to plan and execute climbing experiences for others. Participants must be 18 years old and have previous climbing experience. NOTE: To certify as an AMGA single pitch instructor, a third party test is required. Those who successfully complete the course will be provided a list of testing opportunities in their area. The arrangements and cost of the test are the responsibility of the participant. ACCT LEVEL 1 INSTRUCTOR Challenge courses provide an exciting program that helps participants develop self confidence and encourages teamwork. The ACCT Level 1 Instructor course prepares participants to become challenge course facilitators by developing the skills to safely operate a course as well understand how to facilitate an experience that is beneficial to course participants. Participants must 18 years old and in good physical condition.
