2 Hello, You would not be reading this letter if you weren t concerned about knowing if camp, and specifically Camp Woodstock, was a good fit for your child. We wouldn t be writing it if we didn t think that your concerns were important. WHY CAMP The retreat indoors of many children, according to the Public Health Association, may have significant repercussions. Their concerns were expressed by a recent cartoon that pictured two children playing a video game on a television screen that displayed a trail winding through a forest. The caption read, Wow, this is almost as good as actually being outside. Hundreds of studies have chronicled the alarming rise of childhood obesity, Attention Deficit Disorder, and the loss of social competencies to texting, tweeting and gaming. Camp is the original social network. As I write this sentence, children now spend on average seven hours a day wired to a screen! Camp is also an opportunity for kids to grow and develop independence. I think children need to get away from their parents from time to time to truly get a sense of what they are capable of and build their confidence to handle whatever life throws at them later on. That is what camp does for kids. It gives them a capacity to cope with going away to college, sharing their first apartment and dealing with it on their own. The most common thing I hear from campers is, camp allows me to be myself. They learn to overcome adversity on their own and take ownership in accomplishing it by them selves. WHY WOODSTOCK Like all great camps, we have a beautiful facility, enriched by exceptional counselors, where all the pines and people are real. Our games, activities and adventures are wireless. What sets us apart is our culture. We connect our campers to themselves and to each other by living our CHoRR values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Friendships happen here. So, if Woodstock sounds right for your child, all you need to do is register. We will take it from there. Sincerely, Tony Gronski Executive Director I love everything about Woodstock. The counselors have been like a big sister to me. I really enjoy all the bonding with them and other campers. Everyone I met at camp is great and I am just so glad to be a part of it. Camper 2014

3 SUMMER OVERNIGHT CAMP One-Week Sessions Two-Week Sessions Three-Week Sessions Four-Week Sessions Ages 7 16 Visit our website for Session dates, prices, and Open House Dates. CampWoodstock.org Since 1922 our program has been based on strong values and building relationships. We get to know every camper by name and know their interests. Camp develops independence, self-confidence, creativity and new skills. Every day we have reflection topics which help the counselors and campers share thoughts and feelings that strengthen bonds and develop life long friendships. Campers become part of the Woodstock community. We are a community that prides itself on being Caring, Honest, Respect and Responsibility. We call it being CHoRR! Campers hear about our values at the very beginning. Every cabin has a CHoRR necklace and it is passed on to every camper that exhibits one of the CHoRR values. It is an honor to wear a one of these necklaces and also another honor to pass it on to someone else. 98 % of our campers say they learned Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility The campers get to choose their activities on the first day of camp. Here are just some of the activities they can choose from; Archery, Arts & Crafts, Basketball, BB Gunnery, Canoeing, Chorus, Climbing, Court Sports, Choreography, Creative Writing, Dance, Drawing, Fitness Fun, Fishing, Floor Hockey, Football, Guitar, Gym Class Heroes, High Ropes, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Junior Life-Guarding, Kayaking, LARPing, Letter Boxing, Mountain Biking, Mountain Boarding, Movie Making, Drama, Navy Seals, Newcomb, Origami, Outdoor Adventures, Outdoor Cooking, Radio, Sailing, Snorkeling, Soccer, Stupid But Fun, Swimming, Swim Lessons, Ultimate Frisbee, Video making, Volleyball, Wiffleball, Windsurfing, Yoga, Yurt Media And that s not mentioning our Ga-Ga pit, our water Blob, rope swing and our replica Fenway Park. To see photos of our cabins and facilities visit us at CampWoodstock.org At night the real action begins here at Camp Woodstock. After dinner the staff will put on costumes and role play so the campers have to save the world from ALIENS, ZOMBIES, and CHAOS. They will also help complete a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, SPACE INVASION or I SPY game. We also have fun evening CARNIVALS, CAPTURE THE FLAG and GREEK TREASURE HUNTS. This is what brings out the creative side in every child. The camper s imagination and the staffs wonderful energy is the fuel for these fun and exciting evening games. Visit our website to see videos of summer camp in action at CampWoodstock.org The evening games are really fun and crazy. Everyone in camp gets really excited and the costumes are really cool. Woodstock Camper What separates us from other overnight camps is our staff. Our staff has come up through the ranks of our selective leadership programs. It is a selection process that allows us to have the best staff in the country. Their passion and commitment to your child s well being make Woodstock so special. We have three counselors assigned to every cabin. They mentor your child and help them overcome any anxiety they may have about overnight camp. 99% of our staff were also campers here at Woodstock. They went through every emotion your child will fell away from home. Sleeping away from home can be challenging but your child s confidence will soar when they overcome that adversity. Checkout our Staff Creed online at CampWoodstock.org

4 All the group activities and all the guest speakers made me think about myself and who I want to be, and how much I want to be a leader. It made me want to be responsible for changing someone else s life. Leader-In-Training Participant LEADERS IN TRAINING PROGRAM Our popular four-week Leader-In-Training Program is designed to teach leadership skills to year-olds and includes trips to Vermont s Green Mountains and the beach. In this program each child will have an opportunity to receive Red Cross certifications in Life Guarding, CPR and First Aid. After learning about leadership they will have opportunities to lead the younger campers not only in games but also in evening programs, cabin clean up and choice activities. Many LIT s say this summer is the most meaningful of their life. Each LIT will be evaluated twice during the four week program. This will help the LIT improve on the skills they are learning and developing. My counselors were very good examples of the Woodstock spirit and what a good Woodstocker is supposed to be like. Woodstock Camper TENDERFEET Do you want your child to experience overnight camp but are a bit hesitant to send them for a week? Our new Tenderfeet program allows first time campers, ranging in age 7 to 9, to get a taste of all that Woodstock has to offer. Campers will spend three nights and four days sleeping in a cabin, swimming in Black pond, climbing the rock wall, participating in evening activities and making new friends. Your child can experience camp from either Sunday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Saturday. Spaces are limited so register today! A ton of activities helped me to be able to talk to people better, and be more comfortable with myself. Leader-In-Training participant TEEN ADVENTURE TRIPS These adventures are out of camp trips planned for teens year-olds. They get to live in tents for a week and do everything from rock climbing to rafting, whale watching to hiking. If you have a love for the outdoors and are looking for a fun challenge the adventure trips are for you! Visit our website and check out the teen adventure link to choose your adventure this summer.

6 Camp Woodstock YMCA A branch of the YMCA of Greater Hartford Registration Form - Page 2 Camper s Commitment I want to become a camper at Camp Woodstock YMCA. If accepted, I agree to abide by the camp s code of conduct and camp rules. I will do my best to make this a good experience for myself and my fellow campers. The deposit of $200 per session, per camper is for the purpose of securing my child s reservation at camp and as such is neither refundable nor transferable. The balance of the camp fee is due May 1. If registering after May 1, payment is due in full upon registration. Any refund of the balance will only be considered upon written request clearly stating the special circumstances (medical, emergency, etc.) why the camper is unable to attend camp. A camper leaving camp before the end of the session for medical (not homesickness or behavior) or emergency reasons will receive a pro-rated refund for the days missed.
