2 Motivation Productive Finnish forests resources and competitive wood supply are crucial for the vitality of Finnish forest cluster confidence in sustainable availability of domestic raw material competitive supply of domestic raw material Trends and challenges in wood supply Growth exceeds drain (utilization rate < 80 %) Structure of removals: decreasing proportion of final fellings, increasing proportion of thinning removals and removals from peatland forests Decreased intensity of forest management in private forest Forest ownership structure: increasing number of forest owners & decreasing size of forest holdings => significant effect on quantity and quality of raw material => significant effect on cost-efficiency of wood supply 2

3 Motivation to improve competitiveness of domestic wood supply we have to increase the efficiency of raw material production and procurement increase the utility value of raw material => Consider more intensive, cost-efficient and sustainable management and logging practices in those forests, where prerequisites for commercial wood and biomass production are favorable EffFibre intensified forest management and wood supply chain allows to produce more raw material on a given forest area produce a given amount of raw material on a smaller forest area => Intensification of wood production can improve the premises for the multipurpose utilization of forest resources enables increasing forest areas of less intensive wood production without decreasing raw material supply for forest industry 3
