1 Jing Directions You will be using Jing along with PowerPoint or Keynote to create a five minute voice over presentation. Jing has a number of great tutorials to help you get started or to assist you if you get stuck. Remember, you can always call the Sakai Help Desk for assistance. QUICK PRODUCTION STEPS Read the following directions thoroughly. Write your script and organize your images. Develop slides that contain your images only. Do not record your narration in PowerPoint or Keynote. You will be using Jing to record the audio portion of your presentation and to capture your PowerPoint or Keynote content. Install and launch Jing ( Test your audio recording levels in Jing before attempting to record your presentation. See directions below. Create your presentation. REMEMBER: DO NOT attempt to record full motion video or animations or use transitions on your slides or your file size will be too large. Keep it simple. If your file size exceeds the 50 MB, it will not be accepted by Sakai. View your PowerPoint presentation by navigating to these places: PowerPoint (Windows): Slide Show tab > From the Beginning. PowerPoint (Mac): Click Slide Show menu item > View Slide Show Keynote: Play menu item > Play Slide Show Click on Jing s Capture button then click and drag over the part of the screen you want to capture. Click on Jing s Capture Video button and record your narration. To advance your slides, click anywhere on the screen or use the left and right arrow buttons on your keyboard. When you are done with your presentation click the Stop button. Jing will automatically stop if you run over 5 minutes. Click the Save button and give your file a name.

2 IMPORTANT GOTCHAS! Here are things that will cause frustration: After five minutes of recording, Jing will stop automatically. Don t go over the five minute limit. Do not attempt to record full motion video, slide transitions or lots of animations on your slides. Keep it simple. Your file size will exceed the 50 MB and will not be accepted by Sakai. Extremely large monitors (24 or above) may cause the final file size to be too large. Change to a lower resolution to prevent a bloated file. For detailed instructions, keep reading. INSTALLING JING Download and install the free version of Jing at Jing is a screen capture program that allows you to record both audio and the contents of your screen simultaneously. To complete the installation process, you will be asked to sign-in. After you have completed the installation and sign up process, look carefully around the top edges of your screen. On Windows, the Jing Sun Launcher location is at the top center of the screen. On a Macintosh, it s in the upper right corner. As you move over the sun three options will emerge. The most useful one is Capture.

3 SETTING UP YOUR AUDIO 1) Click More > Preferences. 2) Next, under Audio Input, click Select Device The first time you record a video, you are prompted to select an audio input device. Note that you should connect external audio devices like USB microphones before starting a Jing video. To select your audio input, complete the following steps: Jing will present available audio devices. Choose the one you wish to use, and click OK.

4 Tip: If you don't see a device you think should be in there, try investigating the audio settings in your Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac). Test your audio levels and adjust as needed using the setting in your systems audio control panel. CAPTURING YOUR VIDEO 1. Test your audio recording levels in Jing before attempting to record your presentation. You can do this by recording a test presentation. 2. Open your PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, and view your presentation PowerPoint (Windows): Slide Show tab > From the Beginning. PowerPoint (Mac): Click Slide Show menu item > View Slide Show Keynote: Play menu item > Play Slide Show 3. Jing can capture and share videos (up to five minutes long) from your computer screen. Once you have opened your presentation, click the Capture Video button.

5 4. Use the Jing cross hairs to click and drag across the portion of screen you want to capture. 5. Then click the capture video button. 6. There's a 3-second countdown before you begin recording your audio. The yellow filmstrip-like vertical bands start scrolling to indicate a recording is in progress. Click the Pause button to gather your thoughts or bring a new window or application into the recording area. Click the Restart button if you made a blunder and just want to start the recording over. At the four minute mark, the Jing progress bar will change from amber to red as a warning your five minute time limit is approaching. Click Stop to conclude recording.

6 Your video is displayed in the Jing Preview window. Check to make sure the audio sounds right and you recorded everything you meant to. SAVING YOUR JING MOVIE Now it's time to save and share your video. Click the Save button and give your movie a title. Jing movies are saved as.swf files. Now upload this.swf file into Sakai. Remember, you cannot upload files that exceed 50 megabytes (MB) in size. For tips on viewing your Jing movie, please refer to the directions provided under the heading marked VIEWING YOUR PRESENTATION displayed below. Upload the.swf file as directed in assignment instructions. Pat yourself on the back. Good work! VIEWING YOUR PRESENTATION View your.swf file using FireFox, Internet Explorer or Safari FIREFOX: 1. Open Firefox. 2. Select File > Open File. 3. Locate and click on your Jing.swf file. 4. Click on the Open button located in the lower right corner of the Open File dialogue box. INTERNET EXPLORER: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Select File > Open. 3. Click Browse and navigate to the folder that contains the Jing.swf file you created. 4. Under the Web Documents drop-down menu located to the right of the File Name: text box, select All Files. 5. Locate and click on the Jing.swf file you created then click Open > OK. 6. You may have to click on a button marked Allow Blocked Content to play the file.

7 SAFARI: 1. Right Click (CRTL Click if you have no right mouse button) on the Jing.swf file you created. 2. Select Open with > Other. 3. In the Applications folder, click on the Enable drop down menu and select All Applications. 4. Locate and click on Safari. 5. Click Open.
