1 Summer 2010 Welcome to Manchester College! My name is Michael Case and I am the Information Technology Services (ITS) director at Manchester College. I want to introduce myself and tell you about our campus technology services. You will need to access these systems before you arrive to familiarize yourself with them and to ensure that you hit the ground running when you arrive in August. Please feel free to report any problems you experience to helpdesk@manchester.edu or call ITS Help Desk Hours (when school is in session) Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Username & Password Chances are good that you have already been using your network username and password to access Gateway during the recruitment process. If so, you already know the information below and have probably already changed your password from the default. If you have problems remembering your username and password, please contact Help Desk (helpdesk@manchester.edu or ). Username = First Initial + Middle Initial + Last Name (your username is case insensitive) Initial Password for All Systems Except Help Desk = First Initial (capitalized) + 2- digit Birth Month + Last 4 Digits of Social Security Number (case sensitive) Steps to Complete at Home (Please Allow 3 Business Days from Your Advising & Registration Day) 1) Change your password: Access at Your address (and Windows Live ID) is in the form username@spartans.manchester.edu. 2) Review other new student information at 3) Access Gateway. Please visit to access Gateway. When prompted for your network credentials (user name and password) please use mc\username for the user name and your initial password. While there, click on the password change graphic (example below) at the top of the web page and change your password. 4) Set up a contact for the Emergency Mass Notification System (EMNS). This is how you

2 will be notified in the event of a campus-wide emergency. Log on to Gateway and find User Account in the WebAdvisor tab. Click on User Account and the EMNS link will appear. Click on that link, follow the instructions for entering off-campus addresses where you want to be contacted and press the Submit button. Password Note: The ITS department strives to use a single password approach so that you can use the same password on all ITS systems. Unfortunately, this isn t possible. Most of the systems are tied to one username and password. However, the student system ( has its own password. You can keep these the same but you will have to manually do that for both password (main network password and ). The ITS department provides many services to our resident students. Among these are: Network Storage Phone Service Cable TV Service Account ANGEL Internet Access Gateway Location on the network, backed up by ITS, to store your class files. Also known as your H:\ drive. Each residence hall room has one phone jack. You will need to bring your own phone, answering machine, and phone cord. To place long distance calls, you will need a cell phone or a calling card. You will be assigned a personal phone number that you will keep while you are a resident regardless of your room assignment. You will receive that number during orientation. We have more than 100 channels of popular and educational programming. You must bring a cable-ready TV and cable to connect the TV to the wall jack. You will be assigned an address. The format for your address is username@spartans.manchester.edu. You access your account via Microsoft Outlook or the Web at Manchester College s service includes spam filtering. ANGEL is our online classroom environment. Your professors may use the system to provide you course materials, take tests or quizzes, or turn in homework. You will have access to the Internet from your residence hall room. Sharing copyrighted material is illegal, prohibited, and illadvised. Our campus portal is available 24/7. Here, you will find a wealth of information. Use Gateway to access your schedule, midterm or

3 final grades, and transcripts. Gateway s My Site can be used to store your class work. SpartanPrint Students can print to several network printers around campus using our SpartanPrint system. Students can even print from their residence hall rooms. Students are provided with a $20 printing quota at the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. Money from this quota is not refunded nor does it carry over from semester to semester. Double-sided printing is recommended to save money. Black and white printing costs $0.10 per sheet while color printing costs $0.35 per sheet. A color printer is available in the library. If you need to print beyond your quota, or you want to make photocopies, money may be added to your student photo ID at the cash machine outside the Library lab. Labs There are labs in all residence halls, Clark Computer Center, and the library. Main Labs & Their Hours (Break & Vacation Hours Are Different) Clark Computer Center Monday through Thursday: 8 AM to Midnight Friday: 8 AM to 5 PM Saturday: CLOSED Sunday: 7 PM to Midnight Funderburg Library 7:30 AM to 1 AM, Monday through Thursday 7:30 AM to 10 PM, Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, Saturday 12:30 PM to 1 AM, Sunday Success Center 8 AM to 10 PM, Monday through Thursday 8 AM to 5 PM, Friday Closed Saturday 5 PM to 10 PM, Sunday Manchester College ResNET Acceptable Use Policy Highlights The College network has been designed as a computer medium in which faculty, staff and students can be productive. In order to maintain the network efficiently, Information Technology Services (ITS) has mandated an "acceptable use policy." Each user with access to the network is required to fully abide by this policy. This policy is subject to change without

4 notice. Users can review this policyonline at the Information Technology Services web page at: Users are not to provide rights or access to persons not given network privileges explicitly by the College. Forwarding access or sharing login passwords is potentially dangerous to the user s files as well as network integrity. This behavior will not be condoned. ITS will not support the use of personal machines loaded with any operating systems other than Microsoft XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. Machines running any older Microsoft operating system, Linux, Mac OS, Be OS, or any other operating system may be used on campus but will not be ITS-supported if connected to the College network. Users are not to use College resources, including the network, to distribute any copyrighted material or create duplicates or mirror Internet sites without express written permission from the copyright holder. Copyrighted files will be deleted without warning unless written copyright permission is provided to the Director of ITS or his/her designee. Users are not to damage, alter or steal College information resources, in the form of data, software or hardware, or take any other actions that may potentially impair the network including but not limited to the following: Users are not to use network resources to run a business or service for personal profit or other compensation. Users are not to alter or degrade the abilities of others to access the College network. This includes but is not limited to mass ings, restricting access to servers by any means or the spread of viruses, either through malicious activity or by neglect. Users are not to use network resources for applications that are bandwidthintensive or that circumvent our Internet traffic controls. This includes but is not limited to peer-to-peer file sharing and/ornetwork/multi-session game playing or any software tool designed to counteract the effects of our packet shaper. Users are expected to contact ITS for authorization and verification of questionable usage. Users may not establish any server on the College network including, but not limited to SMTP, Internet, FTP or file servers. Users are also forbidden from altering the network settings for any College-owned network-attached device. Any violation of the above policies may result in a disconnection from campus network resources, both on user-owned or College-owned machines. The above policy is only a broad guideline. Any unmentioned user action that hinders or jeopardizes the network may be used as grounds for termination of the user from the network.

5 Any penalties that result from the violation of the Acceptable Use Policy are determined by the Director of ITS. Users may appeal these decisions to the Vice President of Student Development. Guidelines for ResNet ResNet provides residence hall students network access to College resources and the Internet. For better connectivity and computer security, students who bring computers on campus must comply with the following: For Windows-based Equipment All service packs and critical/important patches must be installed. Optional patches are not required. A single anti-virus package must be present. The virus scanner and its definitions must be current. Most purchased virus scanners require an annual subscription. We support a large number of purchased and free virus scanners. Caution: Please have only one virus scanner installed. Installing multiple scanners will have undesirable results. The PC must be spyware free. Spyware impedes the computer from connecting to and utilizing the network. Several spyware scanners exist, but be careful: some claim to be spyware scanners but actually install spyware. More than one spyware scanner may be installed without repercussion. You can bring either a desktop PC or a laptop. Bring a laptop if portability is important to you. We recommend a machine with any of the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 Mac OS X 10.5.x or above Linux but ITS can only provide limited support Your computer should meet or exceed the minimum requirements for the above operating systems. To connect to our network, your desktop or laptop must have: An Ethernet network port A 15 or longer network cable For laptops to connect wirelessly where available, wireless network support for b or g A quality surge protector We also recommend that you bring all of your software and driver disks in case you need to reload your PC.
