4 Faculty Biographies Course Chair Dr. Christopher Tarnay is the Director of the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Tarnay has extensive experience in minimally-invasive pelvic surgery and is an accomplished educator in the field of Urogynecology. He specializes in both vaginal and laparoscopic surgical techniques. He Co-Chairs the Committee on Robotic Surgery for UCLA Health System and helped introduce gynecologic robotic surgery to Southern California at UCLA performing robotic hysterectomies and sacrocolpopexies since His current research interests include health outcomes research in robotic surgery, medical education, and treatment of genitourinary fistula. Course Co-Chair Dr. Amer Karam attended medical school at the American University in Beirut. He completed his internship and residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of California Los Angeles and a fellowship in breast surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Karam has a vested interest in minimally invasive and robotic surgery with a practice centered on this approach for the treatment of patients with gynecologic malignancy and complicated pelvic surgery. He is currently an associate clinical professor at the Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Director of Robotic Surgery and Outreach in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. Erik P. Dutson, MD, FACS Dr. Erik Dutson attended medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School. After completing medical school, he remained in Norfolk, VA to complete his generalsurgery-residency training. Seeking to further his excellent clinical experience, he worked for one year as a Locum Tenens surgeon, which gave him the opportunity to participate in a variety of practices in different hospitals all over the country while helping out communities. An increasing interest in advancing surgical technologies guided Dr. Dutson to Strasbourg, France, where he worked for two years as a clinical and research fellow at the European Institute for Telesurgery at the University of Louis Pasteur. Upon returning to the United States, he joined the newly formed Minimally Invasive Section of UCLA s Department of Surgery in September He presently serves as the Executive Medical Director of UCLA s Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), a multidisciplinary laboratory with participation by the UCLA Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics. He is a regular panel reviewer for NASA s National Space Biomedical Research Institute. Dr. Howard Salvay graduated David Geffen School of Medicine in 1976 and completed residency at Kaiser Hospital Sacramento. He is director of Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery and Chair of OB/GYN at the Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center, Santa Cruz, a Division of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. His interests are Single Incision Surgery, Reduced Port Surgery, and Robotic Surgery. Additionally he has innovated techniques of contained morcellation for specimen removal so valuable in the present environment. Dr. Salvay was witnessed and participated in the evolution of Advanced Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery for over 30 years. His experience and video library demonstrate common and unique challenges along with the surgical techniques needed to approach the range conditions encountered in a benign gynecological practice.

5 Faculty Biographies Judith Turner, MD, PhD Dr. Judi Turner graduated from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed her residency training at UCLA in anesthesiology in Dr. Turner is the residency program director for anesthesiology. She specializes in anesthesia for liver transplantation and obstetrics and gynecology, and is the former chief of service for bariatric anesthesia. Dr. Turner assists faculty at each of the UCLA medical campuses in the perioperative assessment and anesthetic management of patients undergoing robotic surgery at UCLA. Dan S. Veljovich, MD, FACOG, FACS Dr. Dan S. Veljovich initiated the first robotic gynecologic oncology program in the Pacific Northwest in 2006 and began training fellows and residents in this minimally invasive platform later that year. He published the first paper in the peer-reviewed literature evaluating the use of robotic surgery in endometrial cancer staging in 2008 and has lectured on the topic for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the European Society of Gynecologic Oncology. He enjoys pushing the envelope with this new technology and teaching techniques to residents and fellows from the University of Washington at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.
