Republic of Sudan Ministry of Water Resources & Electricity Sudan Potentials, Opportunities and challenges in Energy field 10 th German-African Energy Forum-Hamburg, April th 2016
contents: Preface Power Generation Hydro generation Thermal generation Hydro & Thermal projects Renewable Energy Power Transmission
Sudan began the electricity industry in 1908, the first 100 KW generator was installed by English Electric Company and then raised to 500 kw at Burri Power Plant in Khartoum. Due to the demand growth, in 1925 contract signed with group of British companies for a period of thirty years for the development of electricity.
Steam generation was started in 1956 at Burri Power station (30 megawatts) 4 steam turbines. In 1960, the government Established Central Electricity and Water Corporation which began to extend electricity and water services in major cities in the country. Gas turbines generation began in 1968 at Kilo X Power station (15 MW) Fiat gas turbine.
Installed capacity Hydro 49% Combined cycle 14% Seam 31% Diesel 5% Gas turbines 1% Total installed capacity 3,227 MW
Total generation at 2105 is 13,133 GWh Hydro 64% Interchange 1% Steam 23% Gas turbines 0% Diesel 2% Combined cycle 10%

% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% Hydr Thermal
There are 13 thermal power plants with different type of generation :steam turbines, gas turbines, combined cycle and diesel. The total installed capacity ( grid +off grid) is about 1,650 MW.
Merowe Dam_ 1250MW
In 1962 it was a first Hydro power plant to generate electricity from Sinnar Dam with a capacity of 15 MW. Sudan has five hydro power plants with a total capacity of 1,593 MW,
Sinnar Power plant: consists of two units with total capacity of 15 MW(1962) Elgria Power plant: consists of three pumps Turbine and two units with a total capacity of 17.8 MW (1964) Roseires Power plant: consists of seven units with total ge capacity of 280 MW. (1971) Jabel Awlia Power plant: consists of 80 units with total capacity of the plant is 30.4 MW. (2005)
Merowe Dam Power plant : its recent and bigger dams which erected in 2009, it is consists of (10) units with total capacity of 1250 MW. Merowe Dam power evacuated via transmission of high-voltage (500 kv) for the first time in Sudan. Total Hydro generation now 1593 MW
Due to the electrical energy demand growth the ministry of water resources & electricity plans to increase the generation capacities with different sources as well as conventional and renewable energy. The short-term plan comprise of the following projects:
To use a available hydro potential for the following projects:
No Dam Capacity (MW) 1 Up Atbara - Sitat Kajbar Dagash Total 982
According to the short-term plan the following thermal power plants projects will implemented:
No Project Capacity (MW) 1 Red Sea Combined cycle 1,500 2 Red sea fired coal steam turbines Garri3 simple cycle phase Garri3 combined cycle phase2 240 Total 2,850
Alfula Project: three units each with capacity of 135 MW with a total capacity of 405 MW,the first unit is expected to synchronize in Transmission Lines to west of Sudan Region (Alfula- Babnosan Nyala Alfashir Alginana)
In order to meet the rapid increase of the demand, the ministry of WRE aim to provide many mobile gas turbines as fast track project. The first set comprise of six units with total capacity of 150 MW.
Port Sudan Project : Combined Cycle with total capacity of 1,500 MW Red Sea Project consist of three units steam turbine Coal fired with total generation capacity of 600 MW. Garri 3 Project :comprise of two phases :open cycle 510 MW, upgrading to combined cycle with total capacity 750MW

Renewable Energy Rural Electrification Program
RENEWABLE ENERGY Rural Electrification Program The project aims to provide the electricity service to the households in rural areas far from the grid by installing Solar Home Systems Target: installing 1.1 million W solar home system(shs) Period: million, 26% of population in rural areas Budget: 600million US $ 31
RENEWABLE ENERGY Rural Electrification Program Pilot project: a pilot project for 100 SHS in 4 different states was implemented. To insure the repayment of the loans on monthly basis (installments) by the beneficiaries, a prepaid meter has been designed and adopted. Currently 10,000 Solar home systems implementation ongoing 32
