Strategic Plan

We are Barnardos NZ Children Come First ko ngä tamariki I TE TUATAHI Our purpose: We support, challenge and empower families, communities and society to make Aotearoa New Zealand the best place to be a child Through our work: More children are safe from physical and emotional harm More children participate in learning More children are valued and respected in their homes and communities

The four values we bring to all of our work: Integrity, respect, success, passion OUR TOP FIVE priorities How we work: We nurture manaakitanga We educate whakamätauria We connect hononga tängata We advocate reo tautoko We innovate ahu whakamua Mä pango, mä whero, ka oti te mahi Regardless of whether we are the servant or the chief, working together we will complete the task

1. Services that make a difference for children We provide services for all children in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Our services include: Intensive social service support for children, including some of the most vulnerable and marginalised Affordable high quality early childhood services which are responsive to individual communities, whänau and tamariki, while providing a social dividend for Barnardos. Working with whänau/families and communities to empower their enduring support for their children. Our unique combination of early childhood education and social services gives us the strength and flexibility to meet children, whänau/families and communities where they are and to respond to their needs. Grow our ability to deliver intensive services, with a focus on the most vulnerable children Enhance our capacity to deliver foster and residential care across the country, with a focus on young people with high and complex needs and supporting transition from care Continually measure the difference we are making to children and families through our work Ensure we have quality, evidence-based practice Deliver preventative programmes for at-risk children and families, including using our early childhood services to deliver social services to vulnerable families Ensure Barnardos KidStart Childcare provides a professional, modern, responsive and consistent service Ensure all children receive high quality early childhood education and care

2. Working with others Collaboration, both within and outside our organisation, is key to our success. Working together makes it easier for families to find and access the services they need, makes the best use of the resources we all have, enables us to share knowledge and learn from each other, and creates better outcomes for children. We are already participants in key government and social service networks, and we are looking to identify new and innovative ways of working together. Grow relationships internally and externally to help children and families get the services they need Deliver services to children and families in partnership with government and non-government organisations across the education, social service, justice and health sectors Share our knowledge, research and practice expertise with others in the early childhood and social services sectors Work with others to advocate for the wellbeing of children

3. Working effectively with Mäori Ngä Pou e Whä sets out our commitment to build partnerships with and ensure participation by Mäori, and to be effective and responsive. To ensure we live Ngä Pou e Whä we need to continue to develop our skills and knowledge, deepen our partnerships, and support and respond to our Mäori staff and clients. In developing our capability to work with Mäori, we also develop our cultural intelligence and grow our ability to work in a culturally responsive way with all children and families, as a mainstream service offering Mäori a genuine and meaningful choice. Strengthen relationships with iwi and hapü to support positive outcomes for children Ensure our organisation and practice are culturally safe and inclusive Build our capability so staff in each of our services can work effectively with Mäori Invest in our Mäori staff to grow leadership and practice

4. Being a sustainable organisation To enable us to continue to deliver quality services for children and families, we need to be financially sound, organisationally resilient and environmentally sustainable. This means ensuring we are making the most effective and efficient use of our resources and planning for the future. We also want to enhance and diversify our income streams so we can reinvest in our services and infrastructure, and grow and innovate. Grow Barnardos KidStart Childcare to ensure a national presence, scale and profitability of operation Develop a contract for services revenue stream for Barnardos KidStart Childcare Invest in our infrastructure to ensure it is fit for purpose, effective and efficient Ensure services have sustainable funding Grow our social enterprise/investment methodology opportunities Grow our research capability so that we can respond to changing needs Share resources, infrastructure and support services with other organisations Support environmental sustainability

5. Being a great place to work Our staff are at the heart of what we do, so we need to ensure we can attract, grow and retain skilled and knowledgeable staff. This means providing an environment that is safe and supportive, where learning and development are fostered, and where our staff have the training, tools and resources they need to be successful in their jobs. Build on our culture of open communication, actively seeking staff input and feedback to improve the way we do things Provide training, development and career progression opportunities for our staff to grow our capability Grow our leadership capability to ensure we have strong and confident leadership Enhance our reward and recognition strategies to ensure we can attract and retain great staff Ensure we have an active health and safety culture throughout the organisation
