Page 12 A big thank to everyone who contributed to our community cohesion week. We had an excellent week learning about and sampling breads from around the world. Thank you to parents who came in and baked with the children, who supported their children to enter the bake off competition and the bread design competition entries. Also thank you to our school chefs Claire and Nicky, Anna - Chair of the HSA and Suzanne Astill from St. Paul s Church for judging the bake off. We were quite overwhelmed by the number of breads brought in and the creative ways in which children had represented their culture in some of their bakes. Thanks also goes to Hambleton Bakery for providing us with some amazing bread to taste during our grandparents afternoon. 2 HSA Christmas Update It has been a busy couple of months! First was the superhero disco which was a resounding success with both children (and staff) very happily dancing the night away while raising over 900. Then just a month later was the Christmas Fair. The Year 6s helped out running the stalls whilst the children were brought round to play the games and enjoy the delicious cakes. Santa with his assistant the Asda Elf visited all of the classes with some lovely gifts - there must have been some very good children this year! We had the Design A Christmas Jumper competition and were bowled over by the quality of the entries! The wonderful Asda Elf judged the competition and brought some festive Christmas stockings filled with prizes. The winners were announced at the sing-a-long after school where it was lovely to see a great turnout to hear the choir and recorders play. The Christmas Fair raised over 1200 which is fantastic! Thank you to everyone who helped by donating cakes, chocolates or some of their time to help run the event. It cannot be said enough how much your support means! 3 We have an exciting new long term fund-raising target! The mobile classrooms at KS2 are in the process of being taken down and in their place the School hopes to design and build a new eco area and garden. This will incorporate a new coop for the chickens. We have also funded a lot of smaller projects for School in the last term; 10 new music stands, a new sound system for the KS2 Hall, a set of Heymann T- shirts for sporting events, a flag banner and new chairs for the KS1 hall. This leads very nicely to the exciting news that the quiz will be held at KS1 this year! Save the day Friday the 22 nd of January, get your teams organised and ready! More details after the holidays. 4 Governor Update On Friday 4th December, we learnt all about the local history of West Bridgford. The day was full of fun, looking at pictures from the past and finding out about how West Bridgford has changed from a small village to a vibrant town! The new website went live last month and now contains an abundance of information for parents and prospective parents. It is very encouraging to have already received positive feedback following the launch. Please take a look at the safeguarding section on the website (Parent Information tab - 'Keeping Safe') which provides lots of links to various websites and on-line courses available to parents. This section also includes details about the PREVENT strategy - part of the government initiative for addressing radicalisation. At Heymann we have a link governor for safeguarding and in-house training took place during November to provide a number of other governors with an overview of the comprehensive policies and procedures in place within the school in relation to this important area. Other activities the governors have undertaken this term include reviewing behaviour monitoring systems and interventions, lesson planning and the new Assessment without Levels tracking system. As we draw a close on the Autumn term, on behalf of the governors, may I wish you and your families a happy and safe Christmas. Jennie Hullis Chair Staff Update Sadly at the end of term we say goodbye to Mrs O Loughlin and Mrs Poon our Reception Turquoise teachers. During the day, we were able to handle objects that were found around the fields of West Bridgford. There were toothbrushes made from animal bone, old glass lemonade bottles and even china toys! Mrs O Loughlin and Mrs Poon will be sadly missed by children, parents and staff. We wish them well for the future. Mrs O Loughlin will continue to teach in RT on Thursday mornings to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity for the class. 6 British Legion Poppy Appeal Many thanks to all those who supported the Poppy Community sing-a-long Friday 18th December 2.30pm. On the MUGA at KS2 Waddington Drive site weather permitting Appeal. We raised a grand total of across both sites. Parking St Paul s Church Christingle Services will be held on Christmas Eve at 2.30pm and 4.00pm. Full details are available on the church website Thank you to all of those who kindly observe our voluntary parking system at both sites and also to those who participate in the one way system used on Waddington Drive. May we remind parents not to park on Swithland Drive. Parking spaces are available at Stanhome Square to avoid using Waddington and Denton Drive. When parked please remember to switch off your engine and avoid double parking. These parking guidelines are not only during the school day but also for all after school activities and events. Sadly we have received an from a resident on Swithland Drive who was obviously distressed when a parent used their drive as a turning bay/circle. The car swept in the drive, past the front door and out the other entrance. Please consider the local residents when parking. Absence Reminder May we remind parents that if your child is absent from school it is important to contact the school office before 9.30am. A message can be left on the school answer phone if this is more convenient. Non-Uniform Day Our last day of term is Friday 18th December. It will be a non-uniform day, please bring in a voluntary contribution. Page 6 Page 7
