Participants will gain an understanding of Ireland and the strong Irish links with Britain and Continental Europe and its people. It is primarily aimed at teachers who have a desire to learn more about Ireland by experiencing Irish culture and traditions first-hand in an interactive and immersive setting. The course offers a range of practical and effective teaching ideas for bringing English to life through language and culture. Course Topics* include: Modern Irish history Gaelic culture Bring course material to life through drama Irish drama Storytelling and improvisation Traditional music The Celtic Tiger economy Contemporary Ireland *Course content may be adjusted depending on the needs and objectives of the participants. 2 Course Methodology Course Objectives This course aims to provide fresh ideas and best practice techniques for the teaching of English language classes by Europe teachers/those active in adult education through the prism of Irish history, culture and traditions. More specifically, the objectives of the course are: To allow participants the opportunity to practice and improve their own English language skills in an English speaking multidimensional and experienced training institute To study in a historical 250 year old Georgian listed building in Dublin city centre To encourage European multidisciplinary collaboration and team work To explain and disseminate key issues in teaching Irish culture in a European context To enhance teaching skills, teacher effectiveness and social awareness through the provision of interactive seminars/ workshops and lecture series To offer opportunities for exchange of ideas between the participants to encourage best practice dissemination To increase the awareness of Irish history and Irish culture and traditions and to provide participants with creative ideas for teaching language and cultural topics To provide participants with creative ideas for teaching language and cultural topics through drama To detail the current use of drama in English language teaching and illustrate the benefits of using drama as a teaching tool This CELT course is delivered through a variety of activities including drama workshops, classroom based teaching and collaborative team-work to allow participants to develop and refresh their own English language skills. Course content and approach is highly informative and stimulating. Participants will take part in seminars, interactive/immersive workshops, detailed lectures, open discussions and observation/site visits, all of which enhance language skills and knowledge of the fascinating culture, history, language and traditions of Ireland as well as providing practical ideas for introducing drama into the classroom. Training will aim to develop a contextual understanding of Ireland's history, cultural and traditions as educational resources in a comparative environment. Participants will be encouraged to compare and contrast new experiences between Ireland and their home country.

3 Location Dublin is a historical and thriving city for culture and entertainment with an extensive collection of museums, art galleries and world famous theatres. Dublin is also home to a great literary tradition, native sons include Shaw, Yeats, Wilde, Joyce and Beckett. Architecturally, Dublin boasts ancient medieval castles, traditional Georgian architecture and more modern buildings all within a short walk of each other. CELT Online and Course Materials We provide all students with comprehensive study materials unique to each course. Some of the materials will be made available electronically through CELT s online virtual blackboard or ed to each participant directly. These materials will be added to each day in order to provide students with a useful reference and study resource containing templates, checklists and exercises. In this way, your course doesn t automatically finish when you leave CELT Ireland. Course Objectives 1. To allow participants to practice their own English language skills. 2. 4 Course Participants The course is designed for practicing teachers of English where English is not their first language (native/mother tongue) Course Venue The courses are delivered in CELT Ireland s headquarters at 25 Mountjoy Square in central Dublin. CELT Ireland is the language division of Public Affairs Ireland (PAI). Our campus offers bright spacious and well equipped modern facilities, in an elegant and historic building close to the city centre. This 250 year old Georgian building was recently meticulously restored and now represents a prime example of traditional architecture. CELT Certification Participants who successfully complete the course will be awarded a CELT Ireland Certificate of Attendance.
