1 APPROVED BY Order No V-825 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 23 July 2015 DESCRIPTOR OF THE STUDY FIELD OF HISTORY AND THEORY OF ART CHAPTER I GENERAL PROVISIONS 1. The Descriptor of the Study Field of History and Theory of Art (hereinafter referred to as the Descriptor ) shall govern the special requirements applied to the study programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art. 2. The Descriptor has been prepared in accordance with the Law on Higher Education and Research of the Republic of Lithuania taking into account Resolution No 535 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania of 4 May 2010 On the Approval of the Descriptor of the Lithuanian Qualifications Framework, Order No V-2212 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 21 November 2011 On the Approval of the Descriptor of Study Cycles, Order No V-501 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 9 April 2010 On the Approval of the Descriptor of General Requirements for Degree-Awarding First Cycle and Integrated Study Programmes, Order No V-826 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 3 June 2010 On the Approval of the Descriptor of General Requirements for Master s Study Programmes, Order No V-2463 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 15 December 2011 On the Approval of Recommendations for Developing the Descriptor of a Study Field or Study Fields, Order No V-222 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 19 February 2010 On the Approval of the List of Branches Making the Group of Study Fields, Order No ISAK-1026 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania of 15 May 2009 On the Approval of the Descriptor of Full-Time and Part-Time Studies, Recommendations of the European Parliament and of the Council 2006/962/EC on Key Competences of Lifelong Learning. 3. Study programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art may be carried out only in universities. Descriptor shall be applied to the first and second cycle studies. 4. This Descriptor aims to: 4.1. Assist higher education institutions in preparing, updating and assessing the study programmes of the study field; 4.2. Give guidelines to experts who assess study programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art; 4.3. Inform students, employers and other stakeholders about the knowledge, skills and their levels acquired during studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art. 5. The study field of History and Theory of Art belongs to the humanities area. The study field of History and Theory of Art shall cover the following branches: Fine Arts Studies, Film Studies, Musicology, Theatre Studies, History and Theory of Architecture, as well as Choreology.
2 2 6. Upon completion of the studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art, the higher education qualification shall be acquired: 6.1. After completing the first cycle university studies, a Bachelor s degree in History and Theory of Art is acquired by issuing a Bachelor s diploma by the higher education institution; 6.2. After completing the second cycle university studies, a Master s degree in History and Theory of Art is acquired by issuing a Master s diploma by the higher education institution. 7. The awarded Bachelor s degree shall meet the sixth level, Master s degree the seventh level of the Lithuanian Qualifications Framework and respective levels of the European Qualifications Framework. 8. First and second cycle studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art may be organised on a full-time and/or part-time basis. 9. Where organising studies in different forms, the framework, scope, and structure of study programme, curriculum, and outcomes shall be equal. 10. Study field of History and Theory of Art may be a main and a minor field in the first cycle study programmes The descriptor of study programme, under which a double Bachelor s degree is awarded, shall cover the study options established by the university: the procedure and principles for opting for minor field (branch) studies or the precise list of minor fields (branches) or the specific minor field (branch); The requirements for the implementation of first cycle studies of minor study field (branch) shall be approved by the higher education institution. 11. General enrolment requirements shall be: Persons with at least secondary education shall be enrolled in first cycle study programmes of study field of History and Theory of Art in an enrolment contest, taking into account their learning outcomes, entrance examinations or other criteria established by the higher education institution. Higher education institutions shall establish a list of competitive subjects by field of study and principles for the award of contest points, the lowest possible entrance grade and other criteria, having received the assessment of student representation, and publish them no later than 2 years preceding the start of the school year; It is recommended to enrol the following persons in the second cycle studies by organising a contest: With higher education qualification and having completed the first cycle university studies in History and Theory of Art and Art Studies and meeting special requirements established by the higher education institution; With higher education qualification and having completed the first cycle studies of such other study area and (or) study field, also supplementary or minor studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art, and meeting special requirements established by the higher education institution. 12. The list of supplementary study subjects and curriculum shall be established by the higher education institution. CHAPTER II CONCEPT AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY FIELD 13. History and Theory of Art is the field of humanities covering the study of various branches of art (fine arts, architecture, music, theatre, dance, film, etc.). History and Theory of Art studies cover a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge;
3 3 therefore, the preparation of study programmes of the field of A History and Theory of Art should be based on national experience in the History and Theory of Art education, foreign examples of good practice, and the view of social partners. Curriculum should be modelled by taking into account the development trends of various arts, the latest news about the humanities, as well as formed practice. 14. History and Theory of Art studies shall aim at educating historians and theoreticians of art of broad expertise, who apply the acquired knowledge in solving problems relevant to modern society, who can independently carry out research of selected object, use sources of history, apply main theories and methods, interpret and assess works of art, work in the interdisciplinary team, convey knowledge of the artistic manifestation verbally and in writing to the audience of specialists and non-specialists, substantiate their view, learn independently and use modern information acquisition and classification techniques, who go by the principles of professional ethics at their work, assume social responsibility, actively participate in cultural processes, and conceptually assess changes, which take place in the community, the state, and the world. 15. Professional activities of historian and theoretician of art shall be perceived as research of art and cultural heritage (analysis, criticism, history, assessment, etc.) as well as influence on artistic processes and management thereof (initiation, mentorship, administration of art projects, etc.). 16. The object of research of History and Theory of Art is works of art, processes, and the players in the field of art from various eras (artists authors, mentors of the art, patrons of the art, users of the art, etc.). Aesthetic, communicative, educative, social, political, and institutional aspects of the art are important for History and Theory of Art. 17. History and Theory of Art comprises the following main fields: history, theory, and criticism. It covers research of different branches of art History of art analyses historical art objects and their relationship in the light of historical and socio-cultural contexts; Theory of art analyses the objects, manifestations, and processes of art from various ears by invoking theoretical and methodological foundation of the humanities; Art criticism analyses, critically assesses, and presents the objects, manifestations, and processes of art to the society. 18. History and Theory of Art covers a broad field of the types of practical activities related to the initiation, organisation, mentorship, coordination of art projects, events, processes, etc. 19. Fine arts experts, architectural historians, musicologists, theatrologists, choreologists, and film historians are prepared according to the study programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art. 20. Graduates of History and Theory of Art programmes can hold various positions in the areas of science, culture, art, education, business, mass media, cultural and art policy, cultural heritage and tourism, cultural and creative industries, as well as such other areas within public, non-governmental, or private sectors. CHAPTER III GENERAL AND SPECIAL LEARNING OUTCOMES 21. This chapter shall specify the underlying learning outcomes of the study field of History and Theory of Art, but they are not the specification of detailed curriculum of a study programme or study subjects.

After completing the first cycle studies of the university study field of History and Theory of Art, the following learning outcomes should be achieved by a person: Knowledge and its application: Ability to name and explain the consistent patterns of the evolution of cultural and artistic manifestation of the world; Ability to interconnect cultural manifestation and processes with historical and contemporary contexts; Ability to define the most relevant scientific theories, concepts, and methods of the studied branch of History and Theory of Art and apply the same to research of artistic and cultural manifestation; Ability to explain the general principles of history and theory of art related activities and apply the same in practice Research skills: Ability to independently define relevant problem of History and Theory of Art and formulate the aims, tasks, as well as hypotheses of research; Ability to refer to the conclusions of accomplished research, collect and analyse data on the researched art object, and evaluate its reliability by using modern information acquisition and classification techniques; Ability to select and consistently apply research methods in the analysis of artistic manifestation and art objects; Ability to generalise and interpret research conclusions by formulating the findings of research Special abilities: Ability to analyse, interpret, and assess the art objects and artistic manifestation in pursuance of the unsophisticated research of History and Theory of Art; Ability to independently select and apply theories as well as methods of History and Theory of Art science in pursuance of research of History and Theory of Art; Ability to assess a specific object, process, or manifestation of art within historical and cultural context; Ability to solve professional and organisational problems arising at work at cultural and art institutions Social abilities: Ability to promote and proclaim the information about culture and art by presenting relevant ideas as well as consistent patterns of evolution to specialists and society; Ability to state personal opinion about the art object or artistic manifestation in writing and verbally based on the requirements of the study field of History and Theory of Art; Ability to adjust the quality of activities by taking into account the analysis of activity results and recommendations of specialists; Ability to communicate and cooperate in the interdisciplinary team, which is engaged in the activities related to research and proclamation of art Personal abilities: Ability to purposefully improve professional skills and methodically develop cognitive competencies; Ability to take decisions in consideration of relevant social, scientific, and ethical problems. 23. After completing the second cycle studies of the university study field of History and Theory of Art, the following learning outcomes should be achieved: Knowledge and its application:
5 Ability to name and critically assess consistent patterns of specific cultural and artistic manifestation, the era, or problem by interconnecting with the latest research conclusions and theoretical assumptions; Ability to generalise and interpret the contexts of studied cultural manifestation as well as their causal relationship and originally apply such knowledge in analysing and assessing the artistic manifestation; Ability to interconnect the latest theories, concepts, and methods of History and Theory of Art and such other sciences and apply the same to the original research; Ability to demonstrate the knowledge of principles of specific field of activities of historian and theoretician of art in solving practical problems of professional activities Research skills: Ability to identify a scientific problem and formulate an original hypothesis of History and Theory of Art; Ability to analyse, synthesise, critically assess, and originally interpret the data; Ability to defend the hypothesis of research by applying contemporary methods and theory of History and Theory of Art; Ability to formulate the original research findings and recommendations by integrating contemporary knowledge of History and Theory of Art science as well as the conclusions of accomplished research Special abilities: Ability to formulate the original interpretations of the art objects and artistic manifestation and substantiate the same by carrying out the integrated research of History and Theory of Art; Ability to research the individually identified problems of theory and (or) practice of art by invoking theories and methods of contemporary sciences; Ability to assess the works of art and cultural heritage going by the principles of professional ethics; Ability to initiate, create, and realise the original history and theory of art related activities at cultural and art institutions with a view to influence cultural development Social abilities: Ability to convey knowledge of the manifestation of selected branch of art and the era, relevant context, theoretical foundations, and the original discoveries to specialists and society; Ability to work with and lead the interdisciplinary team, improve its activities, initiate, organise, and implement projects related to contemporary culture or cultural heritage Personal abilities: Ability to systematically and independently deepen empirical as well as theoretical knowledge and improve professional skills in the chosen direction of improvement; Ability to perform the history and theory of art related activities in an innovative manner going by the principles of (professional) ethics and assume moral responsibility for the social impact of personal activities; Ability to independently solve professional problems in an unfamiliar, everchanging, and interdisciplinary environment of cultural institutions. CHAPTER IV TEACHING, LEARNING, AND ASSESSMENT 24. Diverse and efficient teaching, learning, and student assessment methods, which help to achieve the provided outcomes of study programme corresponding to various styles
6 6 and needs of teaching/learning, should be used in the study programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art. 25. Teachers of programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art should provide for such study methods, which would best answer the purpose as well as outcomes of specific study programme and match the latest didactic tendencies based on the methodology of active student-centred studies. 26. Study methods used in the study programmes of the study field of History and Theory of Art should match the lifelong learning conceptual framework, therefore, student s abilities to work, study, improve independently, and flexibly react to the changes in science and art should be developed. 27. Teachers of the study field of History and Theory of Art should organise teaching activities by taking into account the needs of specific study programme, learning aims and outcomes, refer to the latest research conclusions, and interconnect theoretical aspects of subject (module) taught with practical examples of the country or the region. 28. By taking into account the outcomes of study programme, specifics of particular study subject (module), and different forms of organisation of study activities (lectures, seminars, counselling, independent work, practical training tasks, teamwork, practical training), the following teaching and learning methods should be used: Teaching/learning methods applicable during lectures, seminars, and counselling: presentation, explanation, illustration, and commenting on theoretical material; presentation, analysis, commenting, and discussion of practical examples; demonstration, viewing, listening, and commenting on video and audio records shall be attributed to the traditional conceptual framework of studies; Teaching/learning methods applicable during interactive lectures, seminars, practical training tasks, independent and team work: discussions; debates; brainstorming sessions; work groups; case studies; problem discussions in groups; independent analysis of study material; independent completion of individual assignments (oral presentations, paper writing, creative projects, etc.); completion of team assignment; presentation of independent and (or) team assignments in an oral or written form; public presentations, evaluations, and discussions of independent and (or) team works; role playing games; expert method; collegiate learning assessment; drawing of maps of ideas, insights, or conceptions; preparation of projects; preparation of the folder of learning achievements; reflection diaries; guided tours shall be attributed to the conceptual framework of studies oriented towards the active learning of students; Teaching/learning methods applicable through the use of virtual environment during traditional, distance, or combined studies: video and audio conferences; video and audio lectures; distance teaching/learning courses of the subject (module). 29. The same methods can be applied in studies of different cycles; however, the content and complexity of assignments or the expression of student s independence should vary. 30. The subject taught shall be described according to the subject descriptor form approved by the higher education institution, which shall cover the aims of the subject, anticipatory learning outcomes, teaching and assessment methods, procedure and criteria of assessment, topics of assignments, compulsory and supporting literature, as well as the scope and assignments of student s independent work. During the course of teaching of the subject, students shall be familiarised with the procedure, requirements, and assessment of the study subject, and after the examination session the study achievements shall be analysed and discussed. 31. Research works of History and Theory of Art, which help to develop the analysis skills, and practical training of History and Theory of Art studies, which encourages the
7 7 development and application of practical skills of historian and theoretician of art, should be provided in the teaching/learning process of the study programmes of History and Theory of Art. 32. Different techniques and methods of the assessment of study achievements (e.g., written and oral examinations, papers, oral announcements, reports on practical training, projects, and individual works, evaluation of the folder of learning achievements, selfevaluation, collegiate learning assessment, public discussions, computer-aided testing, etc.) can be applied in the studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art, however, the assessment of students achievements should be based on clear and defined criteria. The assessment of a particular subject (module) of the study programme of the study field of History and Theory of Art should be indicated in the descriptor of the subject (module) based on the results of the subject (module) and related to the methods of teaching and learning. 33. Students should be enabled to be a part of decision-making process as to the number and scope of assignments as well as the subject (module) assessment criteria. 34. The system of student achievement assessment should help to evaluate the achievement level of learning outcomes, get feedback from students, create the background for the improvement of the study programme as well as individual study subjects (modules), and develop new teaching/learning and assessment methods. CHAPTER V REQUIREMENTS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF STUDY PROGRAMMES 35. Subjects of the study field of History and Theory of Art as well as general study subjects can be taught by persons holding a minimum Master s degree or an equivalent qualification of higher education corresponding to the study field or academic study field of the taught study subject. 36. In the first cycle studies, at least half of the subjects of the study field of History and Theory of Art should be taught by persons who have an academic degree. 37. The following requirements are raised for the personnel implementing the second cycle study programmes: At least 80 percent of all subjects should be taught by persons who have an academic or doctor of fine arts degree or who are recognised artists; At least 60 percent (or 40 percent, when the study programme is oriented towards practical activities) of field subject teachers scientific activities shall comply with their taught subjects; At least 20 percent of all study field subjects shall be taught by teachers holding professor s position. 38. The scope of study field subjects (contact hours) in the first and second cycle studies shall be determined by the higher education institution pursuant to this Descriptor and the descriptor of the study programme The scope of contact hours: At least 20 percent of the scope of the first cycle study programme, and where teachers and students participate directly (face-to-face) at least 10 percent; At least 10 percent of the scope of the second cycle study programme and where teachers and students participate directly (face-to-face) at least 5 percent Student s independent work in the second cycle shall comprise at least 30 percent of the scope of each subject.
8 8 39. Student s independent work shall comprise at least 30 percent of the scope of each study subject. Studies of each subject or module shall be finished with the examination and (or) the evaluation of thesis (project) performed independently by a student. 40. First and second cycle studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art shall be finished with a publicly defended final thesis (project). 41. Final thesis (project) shall be subject to the same protection of intellectual property or (and) commercial secrets as a publicly available academic (art) work. 42. With the final thesis (project), a graduate, completing the first cycle studies of the study field of History and Theory of Art, shall reveal the ability to search for the information in various sources, process, analyse, systemise, and interpret the same based on knowledge and abilities acquired during the course of studies as well as the independently applied research. 43. The first cycle study programme of the study field of History and Theory of Art shall be completed by the assessment of graduate s competency during the defence of a final work (project), which receives at least 12 study credits. If a double Bachelor s degree is provided, final papers (projects) of the main study field (branch) and a minor study field (branch) shall be provided by attributing them at least 15 credits in total. 44. First cycle final thesis (project) and its defence evaluation commission should consist of competent specialists of the study field (branch) of History and Theory of Art scientists (recognised artists) and the representatives of social partners. At least 50 percent of the defence evaluation commission shall hold a doctoral degree. 45. Final theses (project) of the study field of History and Theory of Art of the second cycle studies shall be based on the independent theoretical or applied research, application of knowledge, or prepared as a project revealing the abilities conforming to programme aims. With the final thesis (project), a postgraduate shall demonstrate the level of knowledge and understanding, the ability to discuss the chosen topic, to assess the works previously performed by other individuals in the respective study field (branch), to carry out research, to provide interpretations of research conclusions, to describe the research work, to clearly and reasonably formulate research conclusions according to the requirements approved by the higher education institution. 46. At least 30 study credits shall be given to the preparation and defence of the final thesis (project) of the second cycle studies. 47. Second cycle final thesis (project) and its defence evaluation commission should consist of competent specialists of the study field (branch) of History and Theory of Art scientists (recognised artists) and the representatives of social partners. At least one member of the commission (preferably the chair of the commission) shall be a member of other academic institution. At least 70 percent of the members of the commission shall hold a doctoral degree or a doctoral degree in arts. 48. The procedure for evaluating Bachelor s and Master s final theses (projects) shall be clearly documented. 49. Subdivisions, which organise History and Theory of Art study programme, shall have sufficient material and information resources for quality implementation of the study programme. Successful implementation of the study programme requires the following material base: Auditoriums for theoretical lectures and individual practical training tasks shall meet hygiene and occupational safety requirements; Auditoriums shall meet acoustic requirements and be equipped according to the needs of a particular study programme or its branch: modern audio and video equipment, computers and software, as well as material base required for the practical training of art;
9 The number of computers with the text, quantitative and qualitative data processing, as well as innovative education software shall satisfy the self-study requirements of students; In libraries and reading-rooms with literary directories students shall be granted access to the international databases and digital catalogue. The target is that the study literature was digitalised and students could use literary directories at home; Library of audio and video records shall be equipped according to the needs of study programmes: directories of audio and video records as well as digital catalogue; Material base shall be renewed on a regular basis; Study related information (study plans, subject descriptors, timetables, etc.) shall be publicly available on the higher education institution s website. 50. An integral mandatory part of the first cycle History and Theory of Art studies shall be practical training. 51. Scope of practical training shall be not less than 15 credits. 52. Practical training shall be organised in accordance with the procedure for practical training organisation developed by the higher education institution, which shall define the requirements for practical training, specific practical training tasks, intended outcomes and the system for the assessment of learning outcomes, support for students during the practical training, as well as the criteria used to recognise and assess the level of skills acquired by a student during the practical training. 53. Practical training tasks are chosen according to the direction of professional development by linking student s academic preparation with the competence of practical training. Practical training in the Bachelor s study programmes should be organised in a way that during the period of studies a student could familiarise with various fields of activities and develop professional competencies from the role of the observer to the performance of independent functions under the supervision of a supervisor of the practical training institution. 54. During the process of organisation of practical training students shall be enabled to learn from experience by interconnecting professional activities, education, and personal growth. 55. Supervisors in an institution or organisation shall be involved in the process of improvement of the content of practical training tasks and organisation of practical training. 56. Higher education institution can offer the students a list of possible enterprises for practical training. A student may find his/her practical training location himself/herself. After selecting a practical training location, a tripartite agreement is signed between the student, higher education institution, and practical training institution. 57. Practical training in the second cycle studies can be carried out by taking into account the nature of the study programme and the requirements of higher education institution. 58. Students shall be provided an opportunity to get engaged in the academic and artistic activities performed by the higher education institution as well as broader cultural processes implemented with a view to encourage links between the humanities and practical training in the field of art. 59. Students shall be provided an opportunity to participate in the competitions to study the equivalent study programmes in higher education institutions in other countries and accumulate a portion of study credits of the programme. 60. Information about the programme (e.g., forms of studies, specialisations, financing, study aims, anticipatory learning outcomes, evaluation of outcomes, electives, timetables, mobility options, etc.) and any changes in the programme shall be made public. Students shall be granted access to the subject and educational-methodological information of the teacher.
10 Implementers of History and Theory of Art study programme, in cooperation with social partners, shall study the market demands and inform students of the same. Students shall be periodically advised on career opportunities. 62. Implementers of the study programme shall organise surveys of students, graduates, social partners, and employees on a regular basis; programme and its subjects shall be assessed and adjusted according to the survey results. 63. By taking into account the nature of studies, the organisers of the programme should take care of preferential terms for students to visit museums, archives, galleries, theatres, concert halls, cinemas, and such other institutions of culture and art. CHAPTER VI DESCRIPTOR OF LEVELS OF ACHIEVED LEARNING OUTCOMES 64. Study outcomes achieved by the students of the study field of History and Theory of Art are divided into the following achievement levels: Excellent achievement level; Typical (standard) achievement level; Threshold achievement level. 65. A graduate of the first cycle studies of the excellent achievement level shall demonstrate the excellent fundamentals of general university and special knowledge of History and Theory of Art and have the following abilities: Ability to apply the excellent knowledge of History and Theory of Art science and the latest principles of history and theory of art related activities in professional activities; Ability to carry out complicated research according to independently chosen methodology in an excellent manner; Ability to perform complicated professional assignments at the institutions of culture and art; Ability to present the opinion about the art object or artistic manifestation to the diverse audience in a professional manner; to take competent decisions working in the interdisciplinary team; Ability to critically assess and independently improve professional activities and assume responsibility for the consequences of activities performed. 66. A graduate of the second cycle studies of the excellent achievement level shall demonstrate deep understanding of conceptual framework provided in the study programme and dispose of significantly larger amount of information than provided during the study programme. Such graduates shall have the following abilities: Ability to apply the excellent professional knowledge and the most advanced history and theory of art related principles in solving specific history and theory of art related problems; Ability to identify relevant problems of History and Theory of Art science, apply the most efficient integrated research methods, and critically assess the reliability of research; Ability to initiate and perform original history and theory of art related activities at the institutions of culture and art and influence the evolution of contemporary culture; Ability to create conditions for the independent creative activities and lead a team implementing the projects in connection to contemporary culture or cultural heritage; Ability to independently identify new trends of improvement, apply the most relevant methods to achieve the aim, and assume responsibility for the influence of the results of activities on society, culture, and environment.
11 A graduate of the first cycle studies of the typical (standard) achievement level shall demonstrate good fundamentals of general university and special knowledge of History and Theory of Art and have the following abilities: Ability to apply sufficient knowledge of History and Theory of Art science and classic principles of history and theory of art related activities in professional activities; Ability to carry out medium complexity research according to the provided methodology in a good manner; Ability to perform usual professional assignments at the institutions of culture and art; Ability to formulate statements verbally and in writing in a correct and professional manner; to work in the interdisciplinary team; Ability to develop professional activities by taking into account the specialist recommendations and assume responsibility for the consequences of activities performed. 68. A graduate of the second cycle studies of the typical (standard) achievement level shall demonstrate good understanding of conceptual framework provided in the study programme and dispose of information acquired during the study programme.
