2 This part of the session will Help you understand what children are doing online. Explain some of the safety issues you should be aware of. As a Rights Respecting School, we are working alongside Unicef with Rights of the child Children have a right to information (article 17) and a right to privacy, but also the right to be protected and kept safe. (Articles 34 and 36) We are aiming to give you practical activities that you can use at home. Help you and your children have conversations about online safety.

10 Parents and carers Parents and carers play a key role in supporting children to learn about how to stay safe online, and they are one of the first people children turn to if things go wrong. We know it can be difficult to stay on top of the wide range of sites and devices that young people use, so we hope that the following advice helps.

11 The 4 big internet providers in the UK BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media - provide their customers with free parental controls which can be activated at any time. They have come together to produce helpful video guides to help you to download and set-up the controls offered by your provider.

12 Computer consoles Children and young people love playing games. In fact, it is often through games that children first start to use technology. According to Ofcom, 41% of young people aged between 5-15 have a games console in their room.

13 Games From sport related games to mission based games and quests inspiring users to complete challenges, interactive games cater for a wide range of interests, and can enable users to link up and play together. Games can provide a fun and social form of entertainment often encouraging teamwork and cooperation when played with others. Just like offline games, they can have educational benefits, helping to develop skills and understanding.

14 Both handheld consoles like: Nintendo DSi, 3DS, Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the PS Vita. And consoles like: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii and WiiU, can access the internet wirelessly, and allow for playing games with others online. This means they carry a potential risk of Content, Contact, Conduct and Commercialism

15 Parental Controls All of the three main manufacturers (Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft) include parental control functions in their consoles that are linked to age ratings systems.

17 What else can I do? Talk with your child about safe and responsible gaming and agree a set of family rules. Perhaps you could agree rules with your child about how long they are allowed to play for, how they should behave towards other gamers and agree rules about not meeting up with people they have only met online. Remember that gaming devices like the Xbox 360, Wii and PSP connect to the internet, so the same advice and rules for keeping safe online apply.

18 SafeSearch and Parental Controls: What do they do? Age limits can be set so children only see content appropriate to their age. Timings can be set to limit how long children stay online and when they go online. Specific programs can be allowed or blocked, like instant messenger services, or hardware, like webcams. SafeSearch and Parental Controls Some systems will send alerts when something happens. SafeSearch helps keep adult content out of search results by screening websites that contain sexually-explicit content and removing them from the search results.

19 Summary: What you can do when you get Essentials checklist home THINK about how you guide your family in the real world and do the same in the digital world don t be afraid to set boundaries and rules for your child from a young age HAVE a go at some of the technologies your son or daughter enjoys play on the Wii together or ask them to help set you up on Facebook if you re not already a member TALK to your friends, family and other parents about how they help their children to manage their digital world you might pick up some interesting tips MAKE the most of tools like Parental Controls on computers, mobiles and games consoles, privacy features on social networking sites, and safety options on Google and other search engines TRY not to use technology as a babysitter too often we all do it sometimes but it s important to know what your child is doing MAKE digital issues part of everyday conversation show your child that you understand how important technology is to them and talk about all its amazing benefits, but don t shy away from difficult subjects like responsible online behaviour, bullying and pornography

20 Under 5 checklist START setting some boundaries now it s never too early to do things like set limits for the amount of time they can spend on the computer KEEP devices like your mobile out of reach and make sure you have passwords/pins set up on them for the times you might lend them to your child... or for when they simply get hold of them themselves! CHECK the age ratings and descriptions on apps, games, online TV and films before downloading them and allowing your son or daughter to play with or watch them EXPLAIN your technology rules to grandparents, babysitters and the parents of your child s friends so that they also stick to them when they re looking after your child REMEMBER that public Wi-Fi (e.g. in cafés) might not have Parental Controls on it so, if you hand over your ipad to your child while you re having a coffee, they might be able to access more than you bargained for SET the homepage on your family computer or tablet to an appropriate website like Cbeebies
