Excess of sexual material Easy access Highly addictive May involve violence

Luring is when predators use the internet to mask their identity They pretend to be children or young adults to attract children into situations where they could be abused physically or sexually

Internet chat rooms Webcams Blogs Cell phones Text messaging Online games Photos of real teenagers Geo-tagging

Cyberbullying is using electronics and/or the internet to repeatedly hurt someone s feelings on purpose.

I have posted/sent something on the internet that I regretted later. I have received a mean /im/text. I have become angry after having read an e- mail/im/text. I have felt uncomfortable about something that someone said to me online.

Personal information online is available to the public. This includes people who bully. The internet is an easy place to abuse information and to remain anonymous while doing so, which is perfect for bullying. Knowing how to keep yourself and your information safe and secure on the internet can help you to avoid cyberbullying situations.

Cyberbullying Video

Electronic social cruelty Large audience They think they won t get caught Can be difficult to identify Cannot escape the abuse

35% of children and youth have been threatened online, including death threats. 1 in 5 children and youth have had it happen more than once. About one-third of online teens (ages 12-17) have been cyberbullied. Girls are more likely to be targeted. (Lenhart A. Cyberbullying and Online Teens. Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2007.)

Difficulties with school work Missing school Stressed out Physical health problems Low self-esteem Depression Hanging out less with friends Social anxiety Loneliness Self-harm (cutting) Aggressive behaviour Suicide/bullycide

Not knowing the difference between right and wrong Difficulties in relationships More likely to use drugs Problems with completing school work Adult criminality Being bullied at the hands of others

Don t erase the messages Change addresses, usernames, and cell phone numbers Block them Do not lash back If you think it s a mean message, don t open it Tell an adult, and keep telling until it stops In serious cases, report it to the police

Cyberbullying Criminal harassment Assault (when a threat of harm occurs) Defacing websites Hacking Public Mischief

Safe Schools Act now includes cyberbullying Physical or online bullying is formally prohibited in all Ontario schools Students can now be suspended for cyberbullying A new law makes it mandatory for schools to report and respond to serious incidents and inappropriate behaviour including cyberbullying

Set up meeting with school Bring specific details in writing. Do not delete s or other evidence Work on safety plan with school Ask about procedures for child who has bullied If not adequately addressed contact school board (superintendent, trustee, etc.) In serious bullying cases, contact police

A combination of the words sex and texting Sending and receiving sexually explicit messages, nude or seminude photographs or videos by cell phone or other mediasharing technologies.

Reasons why teens have sent or posted sexually suggestive content: Most say it is a "Fun and Flirtatious" activity To improve social status As a perceived joke To feel sexy Girls will say they feel pressure from a guy, and to get noticed from the opposite sex To get positive feedback

Possession & Distribution, Accessing of Child Pornography Children under the age of 18 yrs old Luring Asking someone to do a sexual act over the computer, asking them the "Question Game" The questions are usually sexual in nature and the game is a tool used to measure the person's promiscuous behaviour. Defamatory Libel Is a matter published without lawful justification or excuse, that is likely to injure the reputation of any person by exposing him to hatred, contempt or ridicule, or that is designed to insult the person of or concerning who is published. Voyeurism Taking a picture or video without someone knowing Threats/ Extortion Telling someone you ll distribute their pictures unless they provide more

Delete the picture immediately after telling an adult. If they keep it, they ARE in possession of child pornography and can be charged criminally! Sometimes even the police cannot get those images back

How safe is your website?

Ask yourself: Does this make me feel uncomfortable? Someone you don t know invites you to a private chat You re asked personal questions about your identity A friend conversation starts to become uncomfortable Choose safe user names Don t give personal information out online Talk to your parents about what is safe Use netiquette Remember: the more time you spend online the more likely you are to come across hazards.

What Can Parents Do? Become more knowledgeable about the technologies that children are using Openly discuss this issue in an age appropriate way with children, including the consequences Monitor your children s online/cell phone activity and be transparent about it Cell phone curfew each night Discuss legal and social consequences Know your teen s Social Media accounts and passwords Make this a condition of their cell phone use! Parental Internet Monitoring Software: Net Nanny, Cyber Security, Family Cyber Alert

I have rules at home regarding the computer. I am not allowed on certain websites. My parents monitor what I am doing on the computer. I tell my parents about bad or uncomfortable situations related to the computer. I have posted/sent something that my parents would not be happy about.

but what?

Tell an adult What goes online stays online forever It s never anonymous Think before you click
