1 K- Going Places Safely Essential Question: How do I go places safely on the computer? Students will: discover the Internet can be used to visit far- away places and learn new things; compare how staying safe online is similar to staying safe in the real world; explain rules for traveling safely on the Internet (frm video) Vocab: Internet- an electronic system that connects billions of people using computers, phones, or other devices like your ipad, and allows them to communicate w/one another Online- connected to the internet Website- a place you visit on the Internet 1 st - Ask students if they ve been on a field trip recently, or gone someplace with their family. What did they do to stay safe? (follow rules, stay with a partner, don t go anywhere w/out asking, don t talk to strangers, etc.) 2 nd - Watch My Online Neighborhood Video: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/videos/my- online- neighborhood *Ask students: What did Jeremiah like about the Internet? What kind of things did he like to do? *What 3 rules does he always follow? *Only talk to people you know; always ask an adult before you go online; stick to places you know 3 rd - Tell the students you re now going to take an Internet field trip and visit a website. The San Diego Zoo is a good one. visit the site and explore as time permits. 4 th - At end, have them tell you the 3 rules (from video)

2 How Do You Stay Safe Online? 1 st grade What does it mean to be safe? Ask for answers Vocab: Safe means to be free from danger or harm When you walk down the street or play outside without a trusted adult- how do you stay safe? Ask for answers- highlight these: don t go places you don t know, don t talk to strangers, stay out of trouble, and follow the rules Just like you stay safe in the real world, you need to stay safe in the online world. Give examples from how staying safe online is the same as in the real world. Teach 1- Watch the Jeremiah video: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/videos/my- online- neighborhood What did we learn? Always ask an adult, only talk to people you know, and stick to places that are right for you Teach 2 Have up a picture of the traffic light- what do the colors mean when driving a car? Now, we re going to learn to pick websites that are just right for you. Green- good. Sites that are green are: a good site for you to visit that is made for a kid your age, fun- for things to do and learn about, has words you can understand, doesn t let you talk to people you don t know. Can you think of any green sites? Yellow- caution/move slowly. Sites that are yellow are sites that you aren t sure are right for you, ones that ask for private information like your , address, name, a place where you can talk to people. The words might be hard to understand. Can you think of any sites like these? You need to ask parents before visiting a yellow website- have them check it 1 st. Red- stop. Red sites are not right for you, it s a place you might have gone by accident, and they are filled with things for older kids and grownups. If you go to a red site by mistake- you need to tell an adult right away. Activity- Do the Staying Safe Online sheet- project on the board if possible- remind the kids what the colors mean Just as you stay safe by following the traffic lights, you need to stay safe by choosing sites that are just right for you. How is staying safe in your neighborhood the same as staying safe online? What is a green website? What is a yellow or red website? What should you do if you come across one? *1 handout following this lesson (for your use only- )

3 Staying Safe Online- 1 st grade activity What is the correct color for each statement? Green = Good Yellow = Caution Red = Stop 1. This site is just right for you. 4. This site is not right for you. 7. You went to a website and a stranger asked you for your name and age. 10. Your teacher tells you about a site where you can learn about animals. 2. You should ask an adult you trust. 5. You d like to go there, but you should ask your parents first. 8. A site from your favorite TV show has fun games for kids your age to play. 11. There s a kids sport website that allows you to chat with other people. 3. These things are fun for you to see and do. 6. The site has things for older kids, but not for you. 9. You re on a game site and a pop- up screen asks for your address. 12. You are searching for puppy pictures, and you come across something that makes you uncomfortable.

4 Being Safe on the Internet- Grade 2 There are a lot of ways to keep you safe when you re using the Internet. Some of these ways include learning how to deal with strangers, knowing what personal information is, and keeping your computer safe. First we re going to learn what the Internet is: it s an electronic system that connects billions of people using computers, phones, tablets, and other electronic devices. These devices allow you to talk to one another. If you are online, you are connected to the Internet. What is a stranger? Ask for answers. Make sure the kids understand that a stranger is someone we don t know. What kind of things should we NOT tell a stranger? Address, phone number, full name, etc. What kinds of things are OK to tell a stranger? Favorite color, ice cream flavor. There are certain kinds of information that won t put you in harm s way Another way to be safe on the Internet is to keep your computer safe. How can we keep our computer safe? Never download without asking a grownup, don t go to unsafe websites, don t open s from strangers, make sure your passwords are strong (as for help from a parent) We re going to watch a video now that explains all of these things- to help you understandbetter.http://www.brainpopjr.com/artsandtechnology/technology/internets afety/ What did you lean from the video? Easy quiz after video- same website as video.

5 3 rd Grade- Public vs. private information, being safe online Objectives- compare online friends and real, face- to- face friends; understand that some information should not be given to anyone online w/out permission; learn how to respond if someone online asks personal questions Introduction- share experiences with being online- chatting, FB, Instagram, videogames, etc. Touch on how these people might be face- to- face friends, and they might be people they have never met. How can you know who they really are- you cant. *Talk about private information (information that can identify them) Have them name some (full name, address, school, phone numbers, photos, etc) *Go over this scenario w/the class- Steve likes to play video games online. He always talks to someone w/the screen name MeanMonster12. MeanMonster12 always says funny things online and has good advice. One day while talking, Steve says- my school principal is so strict- she makes up walk in straight lines in the hallway. MeanMonster12 answers- wow, mine isn t that strict. Where do you go to school? What should Steve say? (I d rather not say, that s private information, let s not talk about that, etc) What should you do if someone online is asking you for private information? (tell an adult, log off) *What information is safe to give out? Public Information. What information do you think is safe to give? (favorite subjects in school, pets, favorite foods, books, sports, etc) **Watch: Lee & Kim s video- stop in sections to talk about Lee and Kim- what they re doing wrong. 6 Cyber bullying/being a Good Digital Citizen- 4 th grade Do you remember what Public and Private information is? This is from your Internet lesson last year? Public- information that is SAFE to share- it can t identify you online Private- information that is NOT safe to share- it can identify you online Teach 1- Imagine you are online and someone has sent you a message. If you think the message is OK- but your thumbs up, if you think the message in not OK- thumbs down. You are an idiot I m having a party, and you re not invited I like your new haircut You are really ugly Thanks for the advice, but can you tell me in person next time- and not online? Did you finish your homework? Why is it taking you so long to finish? You are such a freak Kids like to go online and use cell phones, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc- but sometimes the language can get mean or scary. Messages that make people feel bad cross the line and that is called cyberbullying. Cyberbullying- is using technology tools to deliberately upset someone else Here are some steps you can do immediately if you are being bullied online: 1. Talk to a friend or a trusted adult 2. Sign off of the computer/device (ignore the attacks and walk away) 3. Don t respond or retaliate (if you re hurt or angry, you might say things you ll regret later, plus bullies are usually looking for a reaction- don t give them one) 4. Block the bully from your social media site 5. Save and print out the bullying messages (If the bullying continues, this could be proof) Digital Citizenship- practice safe, legal, and responsible use if information and technology

7 As a digital citizen you have responsibilities to yourself, your friends and family, and the larger community in the online world. This means YOU are responsible for YOUR behavior online and offline. One of the ways to be a good digital citizen is to treat others the way you would want to be treated- online and offline.
