Online Reputation Luke Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre (CEOP) Never give out your personal information Parents 1
When should I report to CEOP? How to report a problem...? If you are being asked to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable If someone is being insistent on meeting up Maybe inappropriate chat messages you are receiving Someone acted aggressively or threatened you online, or another child you know 2
How do you know who you are talking to is actually who they say they are? Even if they are sending you pictures and films in reality it could be anyone on the other end. Online sexual abuse is commonly conducted via webcams, instant messenger applications (such as Skype) and social networking sites Terre des Hommes (children s charity) carried out a sting, posing on video chat rooms as "Sweetie", a 10-year-old Filipino girl. Some 20,000 men contacted her, with 1,000 found to have offered her money. The names of these men - including 110 Britons - were passed to police. How do online predators engage youngsters? by using the sites that they use... Often posing as a child of the same age / gender. They will often purposefully present a very similar profile as the child. They are skilled at manipulating them into criminal sexual relationships 3
Online predators have terrifying tactics to get young people onto their webcams and within their sight often in the first two minutes of interaction. One in four young people will go to meet Internet friends in the flesh. Research suggests that young people take more risks online when they are with a friend Eight out of ten will take a friend for safety. Making things safer. Remember E-Safety includes video games Are friends on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network real friends? Make sure if you play online games you think about what you say and to whom Limit posts to be seen by friends and not public Click Protect my Tweets so only approved users can see them In Edit your Profile, change the Posts are Private feature to On Make videos private by adjusting Broadcast and Sharing Options 4
Settings Allowing Friends of Friends to see your posts means that you are allowing your own friends and all of their friends to see your posts. For example : If someone has 200 friends, and each of their friends have 200 friends, 40,000 users are then able to view person s posts Basic filtering means that anyone can send you a PRIVATE MESSAGE to your inbox. Maddie s post is PUBLIC, as shown by the globe icon. Any of the 1.5 billion users on Facebook can then see this post, as it is global. The 2 nd post illustrates how users are able to view another user s posts that they are not friends with. This allows other users who are not friends of Edison to contact him via Snapchat. post or send indecent images blackmailed / exploited By creating, sending or possessing indecent pictures of a person under 18 you are breaking the law. (Protection of Children Act 1978 / Criminal Justice Act 1988) 5
Find out how to deal with a sexting crisis Support and advice of what to do next Use ChildLine and IWF to remove images online Call ChildLine or save the number to your phone S-Start T-Telling O-Other P-People Report Save the evidence Be aware of what you share Try not to respond Block the Bully 6
Options if you are being bullied online Tell the HeadTeacher Under new laws, the head teacher of a school now has the power to enable them to police cyberbullying carried out by pupils even at home Tell CEOP If you think it is worthy of a CEOP report, then the police will listen to your problems and investigate accordingly Call ChildLine. ChildLine offer a 24 / 7 Helpline to explore thoughts, feelings & actions for children and young people who will treat them with respect about any issue - at their own pace - without giving their name A chance for a child to talk to a counsellor Chatline has now been developed on the ChildLine Website Many children prefer to talk about their problems online, where they feel more in control. Important messages for young people... Advice for young people It s never too late to tell. Someone CAN help you. There are lots of people who can help (e.g. Family / School / GP / Police) Be aware of what you share personal information Turn your privacy settings up to the highest level on your social networking sites Get support without giving your name. (ChildLine) Reporting online to CEOP is the same as reporting to the police. so all reports will be taken very seriously Only post things that you would be happy with your family seeing Turn off your Location Based Services If something happens, tell someone Home / School / ChildLine / CEOP 7
