1 Komvux Municipal adult education (komvux in Swedish) is for those of you who need to take courses at the primary or secondary school level. For example, you can take one or more courses in order to continue studying at a university college or vocational college or to start working. What you can do in komvux: Take courses from primary and secondary school Earn a secondary school diploma (professional qualification or college preparatory degree) Supplement courses to increase your qualifications Get into a workplace-based programme (the programme, to a certain extent, is at a workplace) Retrain yourself (qualify for another profession) Review a course you want a grade in Have your knowledge assessed and documented in writing (validation) Would you like to know more? Who can study in komvux? Beginning July 1 of the year you turn 20, you can start komvux. To qualify, you must also be a resident of Sweden, not previously have mastered the knowledge the programme provides, and meet the conditions for successfully tackling the programme. You may be able to start even if you re younger than 20. Right to education at the primary level If you lack the knowledge usually attained in elementary school, you have the right to study in komvux at the primary level. You must also meet the other qualification requirements (for qualifications, see above). If your home municipality does not offer these courses, you have the right to study them in another municipality where the courses do exist.

2 When there aren t enough places at the secondary level If many qualified people are looking for education at the secondary level, the municipality may make a selection to determine who is admitted. In a selection, preference is given to those with the lowest levels of education and to those who: 1. want to finish a programme they ve started in accordance with a written individual study plan; 2. need to supplement their grades because they ve gotten into a reduced programme, or for other qualifications to fulfil entry requirements; or 3. need training for their current job or planned choice of profession. Right to education at the secondary level You have the right to study in komvux if you are qualified and have a degree from an occupational programme in upper secondary school, but during your studies didn t reach the basic qualifications to be allowed to study at a university college. No selection is then made; you are guaranteed a place in komvux. The basic qualification courses are: English 6, Swedish 2 and 3, or Swedish as a second language 2 and 3. This right applies only to these courses. Folk high school An alternative form of education Access courses and general courses at a folk high school can lead to qualifications such as the ones you can get at upper secondary school or in komvux.

3 On studying at komvux How the programme is organised Komvux municipal adult education should strive to adapt the programme based on your needs and requirements. You bring valuable knowledge and experience with you, and it is therefore important that these are made use of in your studies. There may be an opportunity to study part-time, or for distance learning. There may also be an opportunity to study certain courses, or parts of courses, at a workplace (workplace-based learning, or APL in Swedish). If you meet the entry requirements and the conditions for managing your studies, there may be an opportunity to combine studies at different levels and in different types of school. For example, you might combine studies at komvux with studies in a Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) programme. For those studying at komvux at the basic level who do not have sufficient knowledge of Swedish, there may be an opportunity to be allowed to take certain courses in your native language. At the same time, you can get instruction or training in Swedish. Contact your municipality for more information. Individual study plan As a student, you should have an individual study plan. Your school will design your individual study plan together with you. It indicates such things as: your educational goals (if, for example, your goal is to get an upper secondary degree, it should say which upper secondary programme the course corresponds to on the whole), and the scope of your studies. Your individual study plan can be changed if you want to take several courses or if you change your educational goals during the time you are studying. Grades Komvux uses the A F grading scale, the same as in elementary and upper secondary school. A is the highest grade, and F is a failing grade. You must have a grade for every completed course. You may also have your knowledge documented in a certificate.

4 Retrain yourself or supplement your grades An additional degree There is an opportunity for you to get a new degree in the form of a professional qualification, if the new degree has other content than the old one. This also applies to those who have a previous university preparatory degree and wish to study for a professional qualification. On the other hand, you cannot be given a new degree in the form of a university preparatory degree if you have a previous one from upper secondary studies. Supplementing qualifications There may be opportunities to take courses in order to obtain special entry qualifications to university college. Testing and validation Testing If you want grades from komvux and are a resident of the country, you have the right to take tests for all the courses in which grades are given. It is also possible to be examined in your upper secondary school project. The testing can only be done in a municipality that is organising the course in question. The opportunity to be tested also applies to those who previously received a grade in the course or their upper secondary school project. It is possible for the school to charge a fee for testing. The fee can be SEK 500 at most. A fee cannot be charged for students at komvux who received an F in the course the test applies to, or students at komvux who, as part of a course, are undergoing tests after validation. Testing for those attending upper secondary school If you are a student in upper secondary school, you can take a test at komvux if you are missing grades for the course or upper secondary school project in question, or if you did not pass. If you have at least an E, you can take a test only when you have finished upper secondary school.

5 Validation Have your prior knowledge assessed There may be opportunities for you to have your prior knowledge and experiences assessed and documented. The purpose of validation could be that you want to: start studying, and prior to the start, adapt the content and level of your studies so that you don t need to study what you already know, shorten the time of a programme in progress, or document your knowledge in order to demonstrate it (for example, during a job interview).
