2 DUC 2006/643/100 HÖGSKOLAN DALARNA Local Degree Ordinance for Undergraduate Education at Högskolan Dalarna hese regulations shall apply to degrees awarded from July 1, 2007, if all the education covered by the degree certificate was completed before that date. hese regulations may also apply if the education covered by the degree certificate started on or before June 30, 2007 and was completed after that date. he regulations may also apply if a student was admitted to studies on or before June 30, 2007 but was allowed to postpone starting the studies until a time after that date. In this document the scope of studies is expressed in credit points. 1 credit point is equal to 1.5 higher education credits within the system that entered into force on July 1, his local degree ordinance will be in effect until June 30, Approved by the University Faculty Board and the University Faculty Board, eacher Education May 18, Revised April 3, With reference to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100), chapter 6, sections 4-5 and the degree ordinance in appendix 2 of the Higher Education Ordinance, this local degree ordinance has been approved by the University Faculty Board and the University Faculty Board, eacher Education of Högskolan Dalarna. Chapter 1 contains general regulations applying to all degrees. Specific regulations regarding degrees awarded in certain subjects can be found in chapter 2. Chapter 3 contains regulations regarding general degrees. Regulations regarding professional degrees can be found in chapter 4. 2

3 1. GENERAL REGULAIONS 1.1 A subject is defined as a demarcated area of knowledge with its own denomination. A main subject is defined as a subject in which Högskolan Dalarna may award a degree of Master of and/or Bachelor of. A subject s status as a main subject is decided by the University Faculty Board and the University Faculty Board, eacher Education after a special review. he main subjects in use at Högskolan Dalarna can be found in appendix At Högskolan Dalarna, courses that started before July 1, 2007 are categorised as follows: * Basic Course: 1-20 credit points (A-level) * Intermediate Course: credit points (B-level) * Advanced Course: credit points (C-level) * Specialized Course: credit points (D-level) 1.3 A student at Högskolan Dalarna can obtain a degree regardless if the studies have been pursued on an educational programme or on single subject courses, unless otherwise is stated in this document. 1.4 In order to be regarded as an educational programme the education must lead to one of the degrees mentioned in this local degree ordinance. A student is considered to have finished his or her education once the degree certificate has been issued. 1.5 In the degree certificate Högskolan Dalarna will specify the courses that are included in the degree, the number of credit points, grades and dates and, where relevant, previous education or activities that have been accepted for credit. he degree certificate may only include courses that have been passed and are entirely completed. 1.6 Degree certificates are issued in Swedish and English. 1.7 Degree certificates are issued by the Rector of Högskolan Dalarna, or by any other person to whom the right to issue degree certificates has been delegated. 1.8 he degree certificate is a document of value, of which only one (1) original copy will be issued. If a degree certificate has been lost, a duplicate may be issued on request. A set fee will be charged for this service. he amount of the fee is decided by the Head of Administration at Högskolan Dalarna. 1.9 Every degree certificate will be accompanied by a supplement in English, known as the Diploma Supplement, which provides information on the degree in question and its place within the Swedish educational system he Diploma Supplement is issued by the graduation officers at Högskolan Dalarna he Diploma Supplement is issued for all degree certificates issued from the year

4 1.12 If a Diploma Supplement is lost, Högskolan Dalarna may issue a new copy Students who have completed an educational programme may, on request, have the name of that programme stated in the degree certificate, in accordance with requirements specified in the syllabus of the programme in question A student may only be awarded more than one general degree at the same level if the titles of the degrees differ from each other 1.15 A student can only obtain one (1) Lärarexamen (Bachelor of Education/Master of Education) SFS 2001:23, even if the requirements for more areas of activities than one are fulfilled If the exact number of credit points for a Bachelor/Master of Education (Lärarexamen) can not be met, due to the fact that a student has obtained more credits than required for the degree, one course with an exceeding number of credits may be included in the degree certificate. he total number of credits of that additional course, however, will not be included in the total sum of credit points comprised by the degree. 2. SPECIFIC REGULAIONS For a degree with Business Administration and Management as the main subject, a minimum of 5 credit points in each of the three areas Marketing, Organization and Financial Control must be included. For a degree with Economics as the main subject, or when Economics is included in a Bachelor/Master of Science in Business and Economics, courses of at least 5 credit points of microeconomics and 5 credit points of macroeconomics are required. 3. GENERAL DEGREES 3.1 Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) A Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) may be awarded in subjects that have been given status as a main subject in a Master s Degree (see appendix 1), after the student has completed course requirements of at least 160 credit points. he main subject must comprise at least 80 credit points, including an independent project (degree project) of at least 20 credit points or two such projects of at least 10 credit points each. In the main subject at least 20 credit points must derive from specialized courses, including an independent project (degree project) of at least 10 credit points. Credit may be given for 40 credit points from doctoral studies in the main subject Master of Science (eknologie magisterexamen) he requirements for the Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) must be fulfilled (see 3.1). he main subject must belong to the area of echnology, as classified by Statistics Sweden (see appendix 1). he requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Högskoleingenjörsexamen) must also be fulfilled (see 4.5), or the student must hold a Bachelor of Science with the main subject belonging to the area of echnology, awarded by another institution of higher education. 4

5 In addition, a Master of Science with a major in Material Science requires at least 20 credit points of mathematics Master of Science in Business and Economics (Ekonomie magisterexamen) he requirements for the Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) must be fulfilled (see 3.1). he main subject must be Business Administration and Management or Economics. When the main subject is Business Administration and Management, at least 20 credit points of Economics must also have been completed. When the main subject is Economics, at least 20 credit points of Business Administration and Management must also have been completed. In both cases, a further 20 credit points must derive from courses belonging to the area Law, Social and Behavioural Science or Natural Science Master of Arts/Science (Filosofie magisterexamen) A Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) at Högskolan Dalarna will be issued as a Master of Arts (Filosofie magisterexamen) if the requirements for the Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) are met and the main subject belongs to the area of Humanities, Arts, Religion and heology (see appendix 1). A Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) at Högskolan Dalarna will be issued as a Master of Science (Filosofie magisterexamen) if the requirements for the Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesdjup) are met and the main subject belongs to one of the following areas: Law, Social and Behavioural Science; Fine and Applied Arts; Medical Science and Odontology, Natural Science or Health-related Science (see appendix 1). 3.2 Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesbredd) A Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesbredd) shall be obtained by a student who holds a degree of at least 120 credit points or an equivalent foreign degree, after completing course requirements totalling at least 40 credit points with a certain specialisation, in accordance with the syllabus of a course leading to a Master of (Magisterexamen med ämnesbredd). he student shall have completed an independent project (degree project) of at least 10 credit points within the framework of course requirements. he project must be substantially deepening/specializing professional skills. 3.3 Bachelor of (Kandidatexamen) A Bachelor of (Kandidatexamen) may be awarded in subjects that have been given status as a main subject in a Bachelor s Degree (see appendix 1), after the student has completed course requirements of at least 120 credit points. he main subject must comprise at least 60 credit points, including an independent project (degree project) of at least 10 credit points. In the main subject at least 20 credit points must derive from advanced courses, including the independent project (degree project). 5

6 3.3.1 Bachelor of Science (eknologie kandidatexamen) he requirements for the Bachelor of (Kandidatexamen) must be fulfilled (see 3.3). he main subject must belong to the area of echnology (see appendix 1). he requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Högskoleingenjörsexamen) must also be fulfilled (see 4.5). In addition, a Bachelor of Science with a major in Material Science requires at least 15 credit points of mathematics Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics (Ekonomie kandidatexamen) he requirements for the Bachelor of (Kandidatexamen) must be fulfilled (see 3.3). he main subject must be Business Administration and Management or Economics). A Bachelor of (Kandidatexamen) at Högskolan Dalarna will be issued as a Bachelor of Science (Filosofie kandidatexamen) if the requirements for the Bachelor of (Kandidatexamen) are met and the main subject belongs to one of the following areas: Law, Social and Behavioural Science; Fine and Applied Arts; Medical Science and Odontology, Natural Science or Health-related Science (see appendix 1). 3.4 University Diploma (Högskoleexamen) A University Diploma shall be obtained after completing course requirements totalling at least 80 credit points. At least 40 credit points must derive from courses within one subject, including at least 20 credit points of intermediate courses or courses at a higher level. 4 PROFESSIONAL DEGREES Professional degrees and their objectives are stated in appendix 2 (Degree Ordinance) of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100). 4.1 Graduate Diploma in Midwifery (Barnmorskeexamen) A Graduate Diploma in Midwifery shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of at least 60 credit points, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question. he student shall in addition be a qualified nurse and registered with the National Board of Health and Welfare. 6

7 4.2 Bachelor of Education for the Compulsory School (Grundskollärarexamen) (ransitional provisions to SFS 2001:23) A degree with specialisation in years 1-7 shall be awarded after completion of course requirements of 140 credit points in total, in accordance with the programme syllabus. A degree with specialisation in years 4-9 shall be awarded in accordance with the alternatives below, on completion of course requirements and in accordance with the programme syllabus. Alternative 1 requiring a total of at least 180 credit points. At least 60 credit points in subject studies in the main subject and at least 40 credit points in other teaching subject(s) are required. When art or music is included, there is a requirement of at least 80 credit points in that subject. If physical education or Swedish is included, there is a requirement of at least 60 credit points in that subject. Alternative 2 requiring a total of credit points mainly following the study programme syllabus for primary and secondary teacher education that was in force on 30 June 1993 (UHÄ ). he theory and practice of teaching part of the programme shall always constitute at least 40 credit points. In order to be awarded a Bachelor of Education for the Compulsory School, the student shall have completed a period of supervised teaching practice. he degree certificate shall state the type of teaching for which the education is intended. hese regulations are in force, with some reservations, until June 30, Master of Education for the Upper Secondary School (Gymnasielärarexamen) (ransitional provisions to SFS 2001:23) A Master of Education for the Upper Secondary School shall be awarded after completion of course requirements of in total at least 180, 160 or 100 credit points in accordance with the programme syllabus. At least 40 credit points of professional training and teaching practise, with respect to the subject or the subjects that are included in the degree, are always included in the course requirements Depending on the choice of combination of subjects or subject, completion of course requirements according to one of the following alternatives is also a requirement. Alternative 1 (at least 180 credit points): Subject studies of at least 80 credit points for teaching a core subject or a subject specific to a study programme, and subject studies in a second core subject or subject specific to a study programme of at least 60 credit points. Alternative 2 (at least 160/100 credit points): Subject studies of at least 60 credit points for teaching a core subject or a subject specific to a study programme and relevant vocationally oriented higher education courses of at least 60 credit points for teaching a subject specific to a study programme. Considerable vocational experience is also a requirement. If there are no relevant vocationally oriented higher education courses, these may be substituted by some other relevant vocational training. 7

8 Alternative 3 (at least 100 credit points): Relevant vocationally oriented higher education courses of at least 60 credit points for teaching a subject specific to a study programme. Considerable vocational experience is also a requirement. If there are no relevant vocationally oriented higher education courses, these may be substituted by some other relevant vocational training. When modern languages, natural sciences, civics or Swedish are included in any of the alternatives, at least 80 credit points are required in that subject. In-depth studies to at least the 60-credit point level are normally a requirement. In natural sciences, civics and Swedish, in-depth studies are only required to a 40-credit point level in one of the subjects included. Communication skills relevant to the teaching profession and familiarity with and experience of the culture and everyday life of the language area are an additional requirement in modern languages. In order to be awarded a Master of Education for the Upper Secondary School, the student shall have completed a period of supervised teaching practice. he degree certificate shall state the type of teaching for which the education is intended. hese regulations are in force, with some reservations, until June 30, Bachelor/Master of Education (Lärarexamen) A Bachelor of Education/Master of Education shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of 120, 140, 160, 180, 200 or 220 credit points in accordance with the programme syllabus. he programme shall comprise three integrated educational fields: -a general field comprising 60 credit points -a field with one or more areas of emphasis comprising at least 40 credit points specific to a subject or subject area and -a field with one area of specialisation comprising at least 20 credit points. In the general field, interdisciplinary subject studies shall comprise at least 30 credit points. o qualify for teaching and other educational activities in - preschools, pre-school classes, the lower level of the compulsory school as well as school-age child care and mother tongue tuition, at least 140 credit points are required, - higher level of the compulsory school and upper secondary schools, with the exception, however, of the upper secondary school s vocational subjects, 180 credit points are required, including one or two specialisation/s worth at least 60 credit points in the relevant subject/s or subject areas. o qualify to teach subjects specific to vocationally-oriented programmes in upper secondary schools 120 credit points are required. Instead of emphasis and specialisation, extensive professional experience as well as 60 credit points in higher education or other equivalent education are required. 8

9 o qualify to teach Swedish and civics in the compulsory school at least 60 credit points are required and at upper secondary school level at least 80 credit points in subject areas relevant to these subjects. In the case of mother tongue tuition, special focus on the relevant subject area comprising at least 60 credit points is required. At least 10 credit points in the general field shall relate to teaching practice. Likewise, in the field with one or more areas of emphasis at least 10 credit points shall refer to teaching practice. o qualify for a university degree in Education the student shall have completed an independent project (degree project) of 10 credit points. he degree certificate shall state the areas of emphasis and specialisation the student has completed and for what teaching or activities the training is intended. 4.5 Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Högskoleingenjörsexamen) A Bachelor of Science in Engineering shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of at least 120 credit points in total. A minimum of 50 credit points must derive from courses within a subject belonging to the area of echnology (see appendix 1), including a degree project of 10 credit points. he degree project must be an advanced course or higher and chosen after consultation with the examiner. Courses in mathematics, worth at least 10 credit points, must be completed. 4.6 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Sjuksköterskeexamen) A Bachelor of Science in Nursing shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of 120 credit points in total, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question. 4.7 Bachelor of Science in Social Care (Social omsorgsexamen) Högskolan Dalarna is awarding a Bachelor of Science in Social Care with orientation towards the Elderly, the Disabled and the Intellectually Disabled. he degree shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of at least 140 credit points, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question. 4.8 Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing (Specialistsjuksköterskeexamen) A Graduate Diploma in Pediatric Care Specialist Nursing, and in Elderly Care Specialist Nursing, is obtained after completion of course requirements totalling 40 credit points, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question. A Graduate Diploma in Primary Health Care Specialist Nursing is obtained after completion of course requirements totalling 50 credit points, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question. For a Graduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing a registration as a nurse by the National Board of Health and Welfare is also a requirement. 9

10 4.9 University Diploma in Dental Hygiene (andhygienistexamen) A University Diploma in Dental Hygiene shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of in total 80 credit points, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question Vocational University Diploma (Yrkeshögskoleexamen) A Vocational University Diploma shall be obtained after completion of course requirements of 80 credit points, in accordance with the programme syllabus in question. he diploma certificate shall specify the vocational area concerned. -/- 10
