5 Background during the years about teachers are going to retire (almost 1/3 of all teachers) About 10-15% of qualified teachers change their career to other working fields before 1997 the intake number of teacher education was insufficient 80% of the teachers are satisfied to their jobs 66% are suffering from stress 20% of the teachers have difficulties in keeping discipline Activities done Since 1997 teacher education has been increased INCREASED INTAKES GROUPS OF TEACHER EDUCATION IN BASIC STUDIES AND GENERAL UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION class teacher education special education languages mathematics and natural sciences fine arts and music physical exercise student counselling pedagogical studies INCREASED INTAKE IN VET TEACHER EDUCATION VET teacher education intake during the years total 9800 students (more than 70% of total number of VET teachers) ACTIVITIES AT THE SCHOOL LEVEL Principals role has been changed during past decades Now she/he is responsible not only to take care of the school s present day activities But also he/she had to be able to future thinking (vision, strategy work) whole school development staff development plan individual development plan THE ELEMENTS OF A PRINCIPAL S COMPETENCE IN FINLAND; CONFIRMED BY THE NATIONAL BOARD OF EDUCATION (2003) 5 / 7
