1 Komvux Malmö Södervärn Komvux Malmö Södervärn is an important part of the municipal adult education in Malmö. The school provides municipal adult education at many different levels. We can offer courses in: Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) Basic adult education (9-year compulsory school level) Advanced adult education (upper secondary school level) We also have courses for adults with learning disabilities.

2 Adult Education in Sweden Adult education in Sweden is extensive and has a long tradition. The first public colleges for adults were introduced in late 1800s. Free and voluntary civic education began with the emergence of popular movements. Correspondence institutions began a comprehensive distance learning. Later came labor market training to combat unemployment and retraining of the Swedish workforce to the modern industrial society.

3 Municipal adult education was introduced in It evolved in the 1980s into a separate type of school with its own curriculum. During the 1990s, adult education became labour policy. Since 2006 adult education has followed the development of youth education. Adult education exists in many different forms and is organized by many different operators, from national and municipal adult education, to labour market training.

4 Who can study at Komvux? In the local adult education system you can start studying from the year you reach 20. There is no upper age limit. Adult education is intended for anyone who lacks knowledge or who has gaps in the knowledge that these courses aim to provide. A student who attends standard courses and studies fulltime has about hours of lessons a week. Students are also required to do homework. Our courses vary in both the number of classroom hours and the pace of work in order to accommodate all types of students. The education provided is free of charge.

5 SFI - Swedish for immigrants Immigrants who lack basic knowledge of the Swedish language have the right to study Swedish for Immigrants - SFI. The students develop basic language skills and learn about how Swedish society is organized and its most fundamental values. The goal is to give the students enough knowledge of Swedish to communicate effectively in everyday situations, in their social lives and at work. These courses are available both during the day and in the evening.

6 Study courses: Course 1 A+B (C+D) For students who have none or very short schooling from home. Course 2 B+C (D) For students who have up to eight years of schooling. Course 3 C+D For students who have nine years of compulsory education or more. A B C D Oral course Understand, speak, read and write very simple Swedish understand and be understood in simple Swedish, orally and in writing Has sufficient knowledge to work and / or study at the basic level

7 For SFI course D, there are national tests. Approved characters at SFI level D provides access to further studies in Swedish as a second language at a basic level. Five skills in SFI: Oral production Oral interaction Reading comprehension Listening Writing Grades A-F

9 Basic and Advanced adult education In Basic and Advanced adult education you can study various separate courses and subjects: Swedish Swedish as a Second Language Mathematics English Social and Political Science History Religion Natural Science You can study at different levels, full-time and part-time, day-time and in the evenings, intensive studies and flexible studies.

10 Basic and Advanced adult education We offer extra curricular activities for students who for different reasons need extra support during their studies: language-learning support pronunciation training conversation maths workshops

11 E2C Second Chance School E2C is a project initiated by the European Commission. E2C Second Chance School is aimed for young people aged who lack grades and qualifications and therefore are likely to have problems to access the labor market. The studies aim to improve these young people's motivation and give them a chance to improve their learning ability, their basic skills and their social skills.
