The primary focus is improving comprehension and retention of college textbooks. Major topics include reading rate flexibility, vocabulary growth, learning style preferences, and critical reading skills. Candidates meet for classroom instruction, computer- aided instruction, and small group tutoring sessions to discuss and practice strategies. Grading is A, B, C, N/C, NAF. Course Objectives: A. Knowledge: The candidate(s) will: 1. Gain an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses as college learners. 1
2 2. Apply study strategies to textbook and workbook exercises in class with instructor, in small tutor groups, and to content area textbooks outside of class. 3. Improve self-management relating to the college learning process. B. Skills: The candidate(s) will: 1. Practice and adopt a variety of reading and study skill strategies for college learning, including note-taking, test-taking, and making visual study tools. 2. Work to improve reading rate and comprehension through computer assisted instruction. C. Dispositions: The candidate(s) will: 1. Learn to view him/herself as responsible for and capable of adopting strategies to increase his/her academic successes. 2. Consider the role of self-awareness, self-responsibility, and life-long learning in the learning process. 3. Focus upon his/her successes through specific goal setting steps. Students with disabilities must verify their eligibility for accommodations with CSP/Disability Services at (330) ; TDD (330) Classroom Policies: Tutoring: Tutoring is an integral part of the 1510A course. Attendance is mandatory. No make-up hours are permitted for the Reading Lab. Comprehension Tests: Pretest and post testing is mandatory and must be completed to successfully pass this course. Assignments: All assignments must be typed in 12 point font, be double spaced, and have 1 margins. Assignments are always due on the first class day (not tutoring) of the week indicated unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Please notify this instructor before missing class or within 24 hours of missing class due to an emergency. Attendance will be taken by any way deemed appropriate by the instructor. Late Assignments: Assignments will not be accepted late unless approved in advance by the instructor. Please notify your instructor in advance if you will not be able to turn an assignment in on time. Participation: Participation in class and tutoring is expected and necessary for your success in this class. Punctuality and Classroom Etiquette: These are essentials of success in this course. Students arriving late may be penalized. See Student Handbook regarding disruptive student behavior. **PLEASE PLACE CELL PHONES ON SILENT, PUT AWAY, AND NO TEXT MESSAGING!** Students are permitted to use cell phones and other electronic devices at the discretion of the 2
3 instructor or in emergency situations only. If you use your phone or other device during class, you may be asked to leave the class or device will be given to the instructor and returned at the end of the class. Academic Conduct: Cheating on exams, submitting work of other students as one s own, or plagiarism results in penalties ranging from an F on an assignment to expulsion, depending on the seriousness of the offense. Course Fees Each student registered for an RSS course is charged a $35 course fee to cover costs for items consumed in and or maintenance of the Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) lab, a required component of the RSS curriculum. **A mandated student may not withdraw from 1510A without withdrawing from the university.** Campus Assistance Students requiring additional academic assistance should consider contacting the following FREE campus services. If you need to miss class for any reason, please notify your instructor in writing or via before missing 3
4 class. In case of emergency, please contact your instructor immediately after the emergency is resolved. Documentation for missed classes will be expected by your instructor; however, points cannot be awarded for excused absences. You will receive 1 pt for each day of attendance. Point Value 60 My points Book & Binder Check You will be given credit for obtaining your book and a 3 ring binder in a timely manner. This assignment is important as you are expected to utilize your book for class every day. Point Value 50 My points Syllabus Quiz - Students need to be completely familiar with their class syllabus in order to achieve a passing grade in this course. Students will be quizzed on relevant information from their syllabus. Point Value 25 My points Reflective Journal This assignment will give you the opportunity to reflect on your experiences as a student; to tell your own temperature on class days. Reflective Journal is to be dated and approximately 1 page in length. It may be typed or hand-written. This journal will be checked once during the semester, at which time, five (5) of the thirty total points may be awarded. During Week 15 of class it will be collected for a final twenty-five points. Point Value 30 My points Response Journal- You will be required to complete four journal assignments, each in conjunction with a specific topic of discussion. Each assignment will be given one week in advance of its due date. Your response for each assignment should be thorough, covering all points of the assignment. This entry must be must be typed in 12 point font & be double spaced. Each journal can be worth 15 points. Point Value pts each) My points Use of Resources As an effective and successful student, you should be utilizing resources on campus such as the Center for Student Progress (Student Tutorial Services, First-Year Student Services, Supplemental Instruction), the Writing Center, the Math Assistance Center, and the Language Learning & Resource Center. You will receive 5 points for each visit to each service, up to 50 points. If the service does not have a method of notifying instructors (i.e. record of visit form), please ask the provider of that service to your instructor at vsrush@ysu.edu each time you use the service. Point Value 50 My points Student Prepared Study Guide The candidate will prepare a study guide in order to prepare for each examination. Points will be awarded based on the amount of information included in the study guide and the demonstrated amount of effort put into the study guide. Point Value pts each My points 4
5 Visual Organizer The candidate will create a mindmap or other visual organizer to demonstrate the ability to organize the information in a chapter from a textbook in another class. This visual organizer should look as though thought and time were put into its creation. This mindmap will be presented on the day the assignment is due. Point Value 20 My points Portfolio This is a three-ring binder which will have three dividers titled: 1.class notes/handouts 2.tutor work 3.graded work (student prepared tests/journals/etc). The final portfolio will be turned in to the instructor at conferences during Week 15 and will be worth 20 points. Point Value 20 My points Extra credit There are several opportunities to earn extra credit. The first way is to attend College Success Workshops and get an attendance verification slip from the presenter. This will be turned in at conference time. The candidate can earn ten points for each workshop, maximum of thirty (30) extra credit points, but attend as many as you wish. The second way is to attend campus events (social, educational, etc). In order to receive extra credit, you will need to write a half page summary of what you learned from the event or how you benefited from attending. Each written summary will be worth up to ten points. Grading Scale: A B C NC points points points fewer than 448 points (NO CREDIT) The instructor reserves the right to amend the syllabus based upon candidate progress.
