9 but what are Ultra Low Emission Vehicles? So what is an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle? Ultra low emission vehicles (or ULEVs ) are currently defined as any vehicle which produces 75g or less of CO 2 per kilometre from the tailpipe. At the moment this means a vehicle whose wheels are powered by electric motors. These motors may be powered by batteries or a hydrogen fuel cell. All current technologies have their benefits and drawbacks as shown below. Internal Combustion Engine Electric motor or Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) can turn wheels; Can be charged from mains; Limited all-electric range range (15.5 (32.5 miles Prius); Outlander); 600+ mile total 510 mile combined range (Prius); range (Outlander); Official CO 2 49g/km Official (Prius).
