It places specific emphasis on: The skills to participate effectively in the workplace An enormous range of learning opportunities and pathways Australia-wide recognition of qualifications and statements of attainment Assessment against national standards and benchmarks In competency based training, it is a requirement that learners are given opportunities to practice their skills wherever possible in a work environment. The language, literacy and numeracy skills required in a competency based training and assessment program need to be consistent with the skills required for the performance of that task in the particular industry or workplace. Competency based assessment is the process of collecting evidence and making judgements against set criteria. It is a requirement that competency standards must be demonstrated not just known. A leaner has to be able to demonstrate that they are competent in a variety of ways and over a period of time. When you start your course at Kidsafe Qld, your trainer will explain the assessment process in detail. Kidsafe Qld Page 6 of 9
7 7. Assessment Policy Assessments at Kidsafe Qld will take a variety of forms to provide a sufficient range of evidence that is valid, current, sufficient and authentic to enable judgements to be made about the learner s achievement of competency and follow the principles of validity, reliability, fairness and flexibility. Kidsafe Qld Assessments comply with the Assessment Guidelines included in the applicable nationally endorsed training packages or the assessment requirements specified in accredited courses. Kidsafe Qld Assessments provide for applicants to be informed of the context and purpose of the assessment and the assessment process and focus on the application of knowledge and skill to the standard of performance required in the work environment. Assessments may take various forms including, but not limited to: Written tests Case Studies Practical Demonstration Role Plays/Simulations All assessments are graded as competent or not yet competent. Kidsafe Qld has demonstrable experience and skill in providing or facilitating assessments to meet the various needs of participants. All assessors are qualified in workplace assessment processes. For further information on Training & Assessment access the individual Learning & Assessment Strategies for the unit of study you wish to undertake, available on the Kidsafe Qld website. 8. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) What is RPL? Where skills and knowledge have been gained through experience in the workplace or by previous formal training which meets the competency criteria of any unit or qualification, recognition of these skills can reduce or even eliminate the need for additional formal training to gain the required qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process which helps us to recognise the competencies which you have developed in any other context and which are supported by evidence from many sources. If you apply for RPL you will be asked to present evidence of knowledge and skills developed through: Work Personal activities Recreational activities; and/or Courses, workshops and seminars RPL will only be granted if you meet the outcomes identified in a full Unit of Competency. If you can demonstrate competency in one or more of the units of competency will receive a Statement of Attainment that will be recognised nationally. For more information on the processes and benefits of Recognition of Prior Learning visit the Kidsafe Qld website or contact Kidsafe Qld. 9. Code of Practice National Recognition Training undertaken with Kidsafe Qld under the auspice of Kidsafe WA as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is to a nationally recognised standard. Kidsafe WA also recognises qualifications issued by other Registered Training Organisations. Kidsafe Qld Page 7 of 9
