The university s three campuses are located in New Brunswick s francophone regions in Edmundston, Moncton and Shippagan. Université de Moncton offers a variety of study programs, including at the master s and doctorate level. Fields of study include administration, arts, education, engineering, forestry, law, nursing, nutrition, psychology, sciences, social work, etc. More than 35 research centres, chairs and institutes have been established over the years. The student population originates mainly from New Brunswick but also from almost all countries of the international francophonie. 3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR I am delighted to present the Université de Moncton s Annual Report for , an important year that marks the 50 th anniversary of the institution. This document highlights the activities that occurred during this period, which extends until the end of June was a memorable year for the Université de Moncton. During the past ten months, we have celebrated in different ways the many achievements of the only French-language university in New Brunswick. From 1963 to 2013, our great learning institution carved out an increasingly enviable niche amongst post-secondary institutions in Canada. During the June 19 festivities, I recounted the giant steps taken by the Université de Moncton over the years. I will repeat these milestones here to promote a better understanding of the institution s journey. After having been resolutely administered by religious orders, in 1963, post-secondary education in the French language was taken over by the New Brunswick government. This assuming of responsibility was accompanied, not without struggle, by adequate funding for the smooth operation of the institution. With the support of the Acadian and francophone community, the Université then expanded with the establishment of three campuses located in the province s three major francophone areas. Programs specific to the campuses were later introduced, forestry in Edmundston and coastal zones study in Shippagan. These programs stimulated research in these sectors. At the Moncton campus, the law faculty was established and very recently, medical training was introduced in cooperation with the Université de Sherbrooke. These represent major developments; had they not been achieved, we would be lagging behind the rest of the country. I would also like to recall that the Université de Moncton has enabled many, many Acadians to launch successful careers, in fields such as the arts, administration, university education and research and the public school system, to name but a few. Without a French-language university in their own community, most of these Acadians would have established roots elsewhere. The Université de Moncton is now destined to develop and expand even more. Discussions being held here and there and greater openness and transparency on the part of management will enable us to go even further and begin the second halfcentury of its existence with great enthusiasm. A large number of international students now choose the Université de Moncton which also offers a wealth of on-line courses. In the past year, we launched a strategic planning process in an effort to fortify our university after fifty years of existence. Under the banner Strategic Planning 2020: Dare to Dream, faculty, researchers, support staff, administrators and all those involved in any way with the development of the Université de Moncton have been invited to participate in the planning process. With this exercise, our wish is to pursue the further development of our three campuses. In addition to reflecting on the major activities that marked the 50 th anniversary of the institution, this year s annual report features some of the achievements of faculty and staff, as well as students who exemplify our institution s professionalism as well as its progress and its success. I invite you to read this report to become better acquainted with what is happening in the university community and to continue to celebrate with us our journey of fifty years. 4 OUR STUDENTS STAND OUT Université de Moncton students distinguish themselves in various ways during the course of their studies. Listed below are some of their achievements between July 2012 and the end of June The Université de Moncton hosted the 2013 edition of the BiochGames. More than 250 participants from the Université de Montréal, the Université du Québec à Montréal, the Université Laval, the Université de Sherbrooke, McGill University, the Université de Moncton and St. Francis Xavier University took part in the sports, artistic and academic competitions held at the Moncton campus. The Université de Moncton delegation fared well; it won the Université à marier award, the personality-of-the-year award (Martin Chiasson, a 4 th -year B.Sc. student specializing in physics) and the photo rally award. The Université finished in third place overall. Pierre Lyons, a faculty of science student, finished 2 nd in the scientific poster presentation competition. Each year, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development awards five Queen Elizabeth II bursaries of $1,000 each to students registered in education programs. The bursaries for were awarded to the following education students: Kevin Arseneau, from Moncton, B.A.-B.Ed. (major in geography), Moncton campus; Michèle Hébert, from Edmundston, B.Sc.-B.Ed, (concentration in mathematics), Moncton campus; Phémie Maillet, from Bathurst, B.A.-B.Ed (elementary), Shippagan campus; Karine Noël, from Pointe-à-Tom, B.A.-B.Ed (elementary), Shippagan campus and Simon St-Onge, from Edmundston, B.A.-B.Ed (major in history), Edmundston campus. The Canadian Institute for Research on Public Policy and Public Administration (CIPPPA) awarded two bursaries of $4,000 each to Eric Thomas and Valérie Morin, master in public administration students, for their contribution to various research projects throughout the year. Chantal Gagné, a master in public administration student, was awarded the Donald-J.-Savoie scholarship for This $5,000 scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest average upon admission to the master in public administration program. Isabelle LeBlanc, a language sciences doctoral student, has been elected for a three-year mandate to represent graduate students on the board of the Association for Feminist Anthropology (AFA). She is the first student from a francophone minority community to have been elected to the AFA. A delegation of 81 business administration students participated in the 25 th edition of the Jeux du commerce held at HEC Montréal. The university team of entrepreneurs, Marie-Pier Mazerolle, Stéphane LeBlanc and Alex Normandeau, fared well by placing 2 nd. This is the first award since 2004 for the Université de Moncton. Each year, 13 Canadian universities come together to compete in the Jeux du commerce. 2 ANNUAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITÉ DE MONCTON

5 Julie Caissie, from Dieppe, was awarded a scholarship for academic excellence by the Baxter and Alma Ricard Foundation to complete her doctoral studies in education at the Université de Moncton. The scholarship is valued at about $35,000. Daniel Saulnier, a business administration student, was the recipient of the prestigious Frank H. Sobey Award of Excellence in Business Studies. He was also named Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champion by Enactus Canada, an organization promoting progress through entrepreneurial action. Daniel is co-owner of Memories2Go, a portable photo booth rental company that offers instant print souvenirs for special events. He manages the company with business partner, Pascal Degrâce, also a student at the Université de Moncton. Manon Jolicoeur, a Université de Moncton education doctoral student, is one of five winners of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHTC) Storytellers challenge. Launched for the first time this year, the competition aims at better communicating innovative research in human sciences. Ms. Jolicoeur submitted a short video introducing the participants to her project entitled Lire, ça compte (Reading Matters). Since 2009, she has been cooperating with Southeastern New Brunswick hockey coaches develop hockey club reading clubs. Six Université de Moncton students took part in the Northeast Undergraduate Research & Development Symposium (NURDS 2013) held at the University of New England, in Maine. Université de Moncton students fared very well at the international conference. Of note, Roxane Pelletier (chemistry) finished first in the oral presentations while Stéphanie St-Pierre (biochemistry) was among the ten best poster presentations. The other participants from the university, Pierre Lyons (biochemistry), Ann-Marie Bernier (biochemistry), Jérémie Bannister (biochemistry) and Martin Chiasson (physics) received very good observations. This was the first time that students from the Université de Moncton took part in this conference. Three multidisciplinary arts students and an Edmundston campus professor are members of the new Edmundston Youth Secretariat, a ten-member body. The students are Mathieu Lemieux, Stéphanie Beaulieu and Shawn Beaulieu and the professor, Jean-François Saucier, from the business administration department. During the 32 nd edition of the Atlantic Undergraduate Physics and Astronomy Conference (AUPAC 2013) held at the l Université de Moncton, Nicolas LeBlanc, a physics and astronomy department student, won first prize in the Photonics Award sponsored by Lamdba Guard for his presentation concerning the speed of light in a quantum vacuum. About 100 students from universities across Atlantic Canada participated in the conference. An article by doctoral student Samuel Haché, entitled Experimental evidence for an ideal free distribution in a breeding population of a territorial songbird, prepared under joint direction with the University of Alberta, was on the front page of the April edition of the American scientific journal Ecology (volume 94, no 4). Samuel Haché is supervised by department of biology professor Marc-André Villard. Three members of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues women s hockey team were honored during the Atlantic University Sports (AUS) championship game held in Sackville. Natacha Bergeron was named on the AUS rookie team; Kaitlyn Gallaway, on the second AUS all-star team and Marie-Pier Arsenault, on the first AUS all-star team. Alexa-Maude Mallais and Jason MacKenzie, were chosen Université de Moncton female and male athletes for 2012 during the annual gala held in April. Soccer player Donya Salomon-Ali, from LaSalle, Quebec, and hockey player Raphaël Pouliot, from Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, were named female and male rookie of the year. Athletics team pilot Steve LeBlanc was named coach of the year. A HALF-CENTURY OF SUCCESS 3

6 4 OUR FACULTY AND STAFF STAND OUT Université de Moncton faculty and staff members continue to distinguish themselves through their publications, organizational skills and participation in various forums and activities. Listed below are some of their achievements between July 2012 and the end of June The Shippagan campus was the site of a visit by both Canadian (University of Manitoba, University of Ontario Institute of Technology) and European partners (University of Pécs, Hungry, Université de Bretagne-Sud, France and Turku University, Finland) involved in an international information management mobility project (Cross Atlantic Partnership in Network Systems and Information Management). Monique Richard, a music professor since 2004, was the recipient of the Moncton YWCA Arts, Culture and Design Women of Distinction Award. Martin Filion, a biology professor, has edited a book entitled Quantitative Real-time PCR in Applied Microbiology with Caister Academic Press of Great Britain. Sandra Turcotte, a chemistry and biochemistry department professor, Canadian Cancer Research Institute chair and researcher in residence at the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute, received a Krescent New Investigator Award valued at $180,000 over a three-year period. Professor Turcotte will also benefit from infrastructure support in the amount of $25,000. The Krescent New Investigator Award is granted to ANNUAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITÉ DE MONCTON individuals who have demonstrated excellence during their doctoral and post-doctoral training in kidney disease. Corinne Gallant : une pionnière du féminisme en Acadie (Corinne Gallant : An Acadian Feminist Pioneer), authored by Simone LeBlanc-Rainville, is the first book of the Acadian Studies Institute collection Mémoire biographique, a series dedicated to recording the voice of Acadians who have contributed to the development of their society. Launched in the fall of 2012, this book profiles the life of Corinne Gallant, an influential feminist whose career is marked by many commitments to the evolution of the women s movement. Simone LeBlanc-Rainville is a Université de Moncton professor emeritus in education. She also was secretary general of the university from 1995 à An article by Edmundston campus professor Amel Kaouche will be published in the highly-regarded Pure Mathematics and Applications publication. Written in cooperation with Gilbert Labelle, Université du Québec à Montréal professor emeritus, the article is entitled Mayer and Ree-Hoover weights, graph invariants and bipartite complete graphs. In 2013, the mathematics and statistics department joined 805 universities, institutes and organizations in 95 countries to partake in activities to mark the officially-proclaimed International Year of Statistics. This was an opportunity to educate the public on the close relationship between statistics, the science of numbers and other related fields of study. Nine Université de Moncton professors are members of scientific committees led by 25 experts. They are: professors Fahim Ashkar, Jimmy Bourque, Éric Hervet, Gaetan Moreau, Viktor Freiman, Salah El Adlouni, Jules de Tibeiro, Ginette Bégin and Thu Pham-Gia. Alain Patoine, a bachelor in coastal zone management program professor, presented part of his research on the quality of Northeastern New Brunswick coastal waters during the Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research held in Windsor, Ontario. Ruben Sandapen, a physics and astronomy department professor, has been selected as one of the speakers for the Canadian Association of Physicists 2013 Lecture Tour. Professor Sandapen s lecture is entitled Could the hadron be the hologram of a vibrating string in a fifth dimension? It is based on a research published by him in 2012 in the prestigious Physical Review Letters. A new mathematics in motion project (Mathématiques en movement) has been introduced at the Université de Moncton under the initiative of mathematician and professor Donald Violette. The project consists in offering evening information sessions on mathematics intended for the general public and all those who share a love for mathematics.

7 Alain Simard, a chemistry and biochemistry department professor, received a $339,605 grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation to set up a laboratory for the study of neuroimmunology interactions and their role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. This funding comes from the Leaders Fund, a program offering options to fund infrastructure as well as project operating costs. He also is receiving operational funding in the amount of $300,000 for three years from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. During his sabbatical, Roger G. LeBlanc, a kinesiology and recreation school professor, taught and participated in research on the sociology of sports in Havana, Cuba. The Manuel Fajardo University for Sports Sciences (UCCFD) has more than 1,500 students and about 400 professors,ten of which solely in the area of sports sociology. Mr. LeBlanc also presented a mediated lecture in Spanish on the workplace well-being strategy at the International Conference on Physical Education and Sport Science with a focus on women and girls. Ann Beaton, a faculty of health sciences and community services school of psychology professor and a recently renewed, 5 year, tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Intergroup Relations, was named researcher of the month by the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation. The Foundation celebrates researchers for having achieved excellence and leadership in patient-oriented health research, applied medicine and innovation. In the last 12 years, Dr. Beaton has received over $1.5 million in research funding from agencies such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada Foundation for Innovation and Canadian Institutes for Health Research. She mentored close to 40 graduate students and contributed over 75 articles/book chapters, reports and presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Jalila Jbilou, a researcher at the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick (CFMNB), is participating as a co-researcher in a project entitled Personalized Risk Stratification for Prevention and Early Detection of Breast Cancer. The project is funded by Genome Canada s Large-scale Applied Research Project fund and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research through a Government of Canada grant. Chedly Belkhodja, a political science department professor, was in residence at Migrinter at Université de Poitiers. Migrinter is a research lab specializing in the study of international migrations and ethnic relations. Professor Belkhodja researches immigration issues related to medium-size cities located in regions with low immigration rates. He also prepares speeches and papers on cultural, religious and ethnic diversity. Two articles by Donatien Avelé, a faculty of administration accounting department professor, have been approved and presented at the International Conference of Critical Accounting, held in New York. The two articles were published respectively in the International Journal of Critical Accounting and the International Journal of Economics and Accounting. The documentary Scoring With Science was premiered in November 2012 on the Discovery Channel. Alain Haché, a physics and astronomy department professor, took part in the production of the documentary which explores how various advancements in science are helping hockey players improve their performance on ice and reveals how best to shoot a puck. 8 A NEW PRESIDENT AND A NEW CHANCELLOR ARE INSTALLED On the eve of its 50 th birthday, the Université de Moncton welcomed its eighth president and vice-chancellor, Raymond Théberge. The installation ceremony for the new president was held on October 26. A Manitoba native, Dr. Théberge holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from McGill University and has worked in a number of positions related to education, research and administration. At the ceremony, Dr. Théberge highlighted both the challenges and progresses that the institution serving the Acadian community can expect over the next fifty years. He also emphasized that, since its creation, the Université de Moncton has played a key role in the development of the Acadian community. He asked those in attendance if they could name a university that has done as much to support its community during its first half-century of existence. Over the last year, Dr. Théberge has become acquainted with the institution s faculty and staff as well as with many of his colleagues from other universities in the Atlantic Region. He also launched a strategic planning process to redefine the Université de Moncton s main priorities for the next decade. Amid the festivities surrounding the 50 th anniversary of the Université de Moncton s foundation, the board of governors appointed Jean-Claude Savoie as the eighth chancellor of this great Acadian institution. A native of Saint-Quentin, Mr. Savoie is a well-known entrepreneur who, with his father, in 1978 founded the Groupe Savoie, a business that has become a flagship of the New Brunswick forest industry. A leader in hardwood processing, it employs more than 550 people. The new chancellor holds a bachelor of science from Laurentian University and a bachelor of education from the Université de Moncton. He has been a board member for several regional and national professional associations. In 2004, l Université de Moncton conferred him an honorary doctorate in business administration, one of many distinctions awarded to him during his career as an entrepreneur. He admitted that his appointment as chancellor came as a pleasant surprise. Jean-Claude Savoie believes that the Université de Moncton is one of the great leaders of post-secondary education in Canada. He believes that it has enabled many Acadians to succeed and that it has contributed to a greater visibility of l Acadie beyond its borders. 6 ANNUAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITÉ DE MONCTON

9 THE UNIVERSITY AND THE COMMUNITY Convocation Three professors were granted emeritus status at the fall 2012 convocation ceremony at the Moncton campus. They are, Normand Gionet, professor emeritus in kinesiology, Noyan Turkkan, professor emeritus in engineering and George Wybouw, professor emeritus in business administration. Then, during convocation ceremonies held at the three campuses in May 2013, the Université de Moncton conferred five honorary doctorates to accomplished individuals who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields as well as emeritus status upon two professors. At the Shippagan campus, chancellor Jean-Claude Savoie conferred an honorary doctorate in education to retired senator Rose-Marie Losier-Cool, and one in engineering to entrepreneur Léopold Thériault. At the Edmundston campus, the chancellor conferred an honorary doctorate in education to Raymond Daigle, a provincial government career public servant, and emeritus status in education to Jean-Guy Poitras, a professor for 40 years at the campus. At the Moncton campus, an honorary doctorate in arts was conferred to filmmaker Phil Comeau, and one in engineering to astronaut Julie Payette. Emeritus status in nursing was conferred upon Jeannette LeBlanc, who taught at the school of nursing for 37 years. Partnership with the Correctional Service of Canada The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the Université de Moncton entered into a partnership for the establishment of the first French-language criminology minor program in Atlantic Canada. The agreement provides for the delivery by CSC of up to three criminology courses per academic year for the next three years. This partnership supports the efforts of the Government of Canada to enhance the vitality of official language minority communities and foster the full recognition of both English and French. The partnership will enable current and future students who have an interest in this field to study in French. CSC Regional deputy commissioner Thérèse LeBlanc and Université de Moncton president and vice-chancellor Raymond Théberge signed the agreement. Louis R. Comeau leaves his role as chancellor At its last meeting in 2012, the board of governors paid tribute to Louis R. Comeau who ended his mandate as the university s chancellor on December 31 st. In December 2004, Mr. Comeau succeeded Roméo LeBlanc, former governor-general of Canada, as the Université de Moncton s seventh chancellor. 10 THE UNIVERSITY AND THE COMMUNITY Alumni association activities At the Soirée Ovation 2012, the Association des anciens, anciennes et amis de l Université de Moncton, Moncton Campus honored two of its members, Édith Butler and Gaetan Lanteigne. Performer Édith Butler was awarded the Order of Merit for Université de Moncton graduates. This award recognizes the outstanding contribution of a member of the alumni who gives honour to her/his alma mater and profession, be it in the religious, political, social, economic, scientific or artistic field. The alumni association also awarded the Prix Émergence to Gaetan Lanteigne, who teaches small business management at the New Brunswick Community College Acadian Peninsula Campus. In Edmundston, the Cyrille-Simard benefit roast, organized in March 2013 by the Fondation Saint-Louis- Maillet at the Palais des congrès d Edmundston, raised $25,000. Mr. Simard is an entrepreneur and the mayor of the City of Edmundston. The Association des Anciens, Anciennes et Ami-e-s de l Université de Moncton, Shippagan Campus held its fall supper on October 28, 2012 as part of the university s 50 th anniversary celebration. President and vice-chancellor Raymond Théberge was guest speaker. The third edition of the conference series L Acadie 2020 of the Association des anciens, anciennes et amis de l Université de Moncton entitled L avenir économique du Canada atlantique passe par quoi? was held in March at the Moncton campus. Hosted by Jeffrey Simpson with the participation of Sophie Thériault, Sébastien Breau and Pierre-Yves Julien, the conference was an excellent forum to reflect and exchange ideas on issues affecting l Acadie, today and in the future, with the intent of better understanding how the world situation impacts our development here. Close to 200 people participated in the exchange which fostered perspectives that are different from those generally presented in the public arena as well as new insights on issues at the heart of our development as a society. International Week, a long-standing tradition Under the theme L UMCE, a campus with an international flair!, International Week was launched at the Edmundston campus on February 4, 2013 with the traditional flags ceremony before a packed audience of guests, students, faculty and staff members. At the Moncton campus, the international student association (the Association des étudiantes et étudiants internationaux de l Université de Moncton) presented the 37 th edition of the very popular international evening at the Ceps Louis-J.-Robichaud. Held on Saturday, February 16, the theme of the event was A view of the world... through the eyes of others. At the Shippagan campus, the 8 th International Week was held from February 4 to 9 and featured many activities. 11 Strategic planning: Dare to dream! On May 14, the Université de Moncton officially launched a strategic planning process under the theme Université de Moncton 2020: Dare to dream! Over the next few months, the university community, partners and New Brunswick francophone and Acadian community leaders will join president Raymond Théberge in group and one-on-one discussions on the future of the institution. The Université de Moncton launched the strategic planning exercise by initiating discussions on five major themes: 1) Recruitment and a culture of success for students, 2) Quality of education, 3) Internationalization, 4) Research, development, creation and innovation and 5) Community outreach. Over the next few months, university officials, groups, faculties as well as individuals and community leaders will be convened to meetings with the university president. The objective is to give a voice to all members of the university community and to hear from stakeholders. Université de Moncton and Mount Allison University welcome Chiasson as artist in residence Renowned Acadian artist and former New Brunswick lieutenant governor, Herménégilde Chiasson, is the first artist in residence at Casino New Brunswick. During his three-year mandate, his time will be shared between the Université de Moncton and Mount Allison University, two of his alma mater. The project is funded by Casino New Brunswick with a grant of $500,000. Income tax project At the Edmundston campus, on March 7 and 8, more than 265 income tax and benefit returns were prepared during the annual income tax project organized by the business administration program. The returns were prepared free of charge by about twenty volunteers from the second year tax course. The project was supervised by Jean-François Saucier, professor, Paul Cormier, from the Canada Revenue Agency, and Samar Effendi, a former student of the tax course. And, during a weekend in March, third and fourth year administration students from the Moncton campus volunteered their services to prepare income tax returns for 688 individuals who had simple tax situations and whose income was below $30,000. This was 54 more than the previous year. Between March 22 and 24, the students completed 395 returns. They also completed 256 returns in homes and institutions and made three house calls to accommodate handicapped individuals. An additional 34 returns were prepared for individuals with appointments. Moncton and Sherbrooke universities renew their cooperation agreement and inaugurate the CFMNB s new facilities On November 1 st, 2012, Université de Sherbrooke president Luce Samoisette and Université de Moncton president Raymond Théberge signed a new agreement which provides for continued cooperation in the area of medical training for French-speaking Acadian students under the Université de Sherbrooke s predoctoral medical training program. 12 THE UNIVERSITÉ DE MONCTON OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE COMMUNITY On Saturday, May 11, as part of its 50 th anniversary celebration, the Université de Moncton held open houses on its three campuses. The public was able to tour the facilities, laboratories and other attractions in which the institution takes great pride. This was also an occasion to meet those who are at the core of the university community. The Moncton Campus hosted a luncheon with entertainment for the entire family. Visitors could participate in guided tours with a choice of five circuits: culture, discovery, health, the Aigles and a potpourri. In Edmundston, the mood was festive. It was an occasion for community folks to discover the campus ultramodern facilities and to join alumni representation from each decade of the institution s history for a meal including a superb 50 th anniversary cake. 13 APPOINTMENTS Marthe Brideau was appointed chief librarian at the Bibliothèque Champlain located on the Moncton campus. The appointment is for a regular five-year mandate until December A native of Tracadie- Sheila, Ms. Brideau holds a bachelor of science with specialization in biology from the Université de Moncton and a master in library sciences from the Université de Montréal. Jacques Paul Couturier was appointed Edmundston campus vicepresident for a five-year mandate beginning July 1, Jacques Paul Couturier holds a Ph.D. and a master in history from the Université de Montréal. He also holds a bachelor of arts in history and a multidisciplinary arts degree from the Université de Moncton and studied at the Université de Poitiers, in France. Pierrette Fortin was appointed dean of studies at the Edmundston campus for a five-year mandate beginning July 1, Ms. Fortin holds a Ph.D. in philosophy and a master of arts in philosophy from the Université Laval as well as a bachelor of arts with specialization in philosophy from the Université de Moncton. Gino LeBlanc, assistant executive director of the Canadian Institute for Research on Public Policy and Public Administration (CIRPPPA) has been assigned to the president and vice-chancellor s office for a period of 18 months as special advisor, strategic planning and government relations. As part of his assignment, which started on January 2, 2013, Mr. LeBlanc s mandate is to guide and support the management team through a strategic planning exercise. He is also responsible for managing issues related to the institution s government relations initiatives. Edgar Robichaud, former assistant vice-president, academic affairs, was appointed vice-president, administration and human resources effective July 1, In his new role, Mr. Robichaud will be responsible for the management of human, material and financial resources for the institution as a whole. Mr. Robichaud holds a master and a Ph.D. in forestry from the University of New Brunswick as well as a bachelor of applied sciences from the Université Laval. Richard Saillant, former vice-president of administration and human resources, was appointed executive director of the Canadian Institute for Research on Public Policy and Public Administration (CIRPPPA) at the Université de Moncton. The appointment takes effect on July 1, Prior to joining the Université de Moncton, he was director general of investment review and strategic planning with Industry Canada. A federal public servant since 1997, he was also director of rail policy at Transport Canada and an economist with the Privy Council Office of Canada. Sid-Ahmed Selouani will become dean of studies at the Shippagan campus on July 1, A professional engineer with a master in telecommunications, Mr. Selouani was the recipient of a World Bank scholarship that led to the completion of a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer sciences from a renowned French research laboratory. 14 50 YEARS IS WORTH CELEBRATING! During the June 19, 2012 event commemorating the 49 th anniversary of the foundation of the Université de Moncton, Linda Schofield, 50 th anniversary organizing committee chair and executive director, university relations, unveiled the 50 th anniversary logo with president Raymond Théberge and student recruitment service graphic artist André Goguen who designed the logo. Then, through a videoconference, on October 5, 2012, President Raymond Théberge simultaneously launched the 50 th anniversary celebration on the three campuses during a colourful ceremony held at the Moncton campus. On this occasion, president Théberge announced that two graduates would preside over the 50 th anniversary celebration: lawyer and entrepreneur Monique Imbeault and renowned artist Herménégilde Chiasson. The variety of activities held throughout the year highlighted both past achievements and challenges for the year ahead. In fact, the 35 activities held during the anniversary year brought together 8,000 people and generated considerable media interest. On June 19, to bring this special year to an end, there were many activities held at the Université de Moncton s campuses. On this bright sunny day, faculty and staff, provincial and municipal elected officials, students as well as members of the francophone and Acadian community came together at the three campuses. In the morning, faculty and staff listened intently to various presentations through videoconferencing from the Moncton campus. After a superb rendering of the Acadian national anthem Ave Maris Stella, there were a number of guest speakers: Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Danny Soucy; Premier David Alward; co-chairs of the 50 th anniversary celebration, Monique Imbeault and Herménégilde Chiasson; Moncton mayor George LeBlanc; chairman of the board of governors André Richard and university president and vice-chancellor Raymond Théberge. Historians Maurice Basque and Marc Robichaud delivered a presentation on the history of the Université de Moncton. A meal was served to those gathered all three campuses during which awards were presented to faculty and staff members having completed 10 and 25 years of service, and best wishes offered to those who were leaving for a well-deserved retirement. At the Moncton campus, a commemorative event was held with humorist Luc LeBlanc and the band La Virée, while in Shippagan, participants enjoyed local artist Tommy Bulger.
