1 STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS TIMELINE AND MILESTONES MAY 10, 2013 In January 2012 the strategic planning Leadership Council was appointed by President David Chicoine and chaired by Provost Laurie Nichols. 2 Over a 10-month period, the Leadership Council met nine times individually and was part of several more campus-wide dialogue and discussions. Leadership Council meetings occurred on: February 3, 2012 March 12, 2012 April 5, 2012 May 4, 2012 July 2012: Organizational meeting that included sharing the mission of the Leadership Council and strategic planning background. The council also reviewed the university s previous plan: Achieving National Distinction, Strengthening Local Relevance The South Dakota State University Plan, Review of peers and RFP to external firms to consult on development of the strategic plan. Debrief of departmental meetings and update on content analysis, in addition to debrief of dialogue and listening sessions. Planning statewide listening sessions schedule, locations and teams to send to each. Consultant proposals and selection. Leadership Council Retreat. Meeting topics and sessions included: Undergraduate recruitment and enrollment Diversity and inclusion Information technology Resource alignment SDSU Foundation Research, scholarship and graduate education Extended education and lifelong learning Academic affairs June 13, 2012 September 7, 2012 September 19, 2012 November 13, 2012 November 16, 2012 Debrief of statewide listening sessions, final review of dialogue and listening sessions and content analysis of department/unit meetings. Introduction of Pappas Review of initial draft of strategic plan with Pappas Review of updated draft of strategic plan with Pappas Discuss title, marketing ideas and Web presence for strategic plan. Pappas Consulting Group provided summary of feedback received from phase I and phase II of the vetting process. Final meeting with Pappas IMPACT
3 In addition to the work of the Leadership Council, several other campus initiatives and meetings occurred over a 10-month period during the development of Impact These included: November 2011: January 2012: February 2012: February-March 2012: Kick-off/keynote presentation: Bob Berdahl, president emeritus of the Association of American Universities, long-time chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and former interim president of the University of Oregon visited South Dakota State to share his thoughts on The Future of Higher Education. College Planning and Budget presentations. Environmental scan: R. Michael Tanner, Vice President of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities visited South Dakota State University to conduct discussions and an environmental scan of agents, forces and factors, relationships, and phenomena and trends that are changing the world in which public universities carry out their missions. Campus dialogue and listening session. Topics included: Academic Programs, Curriculum and Academic Quality Athletics Design, Master Plan and Campus Aesthetics Diversity and Inclusion Engagement and Outreach, Economic Development and Vibrant Communities Extended Education and Lifelong Learning Information Technology Research, Scholarship and Graduate Education Resource Alignment, Revenue and Budgeting Model Student Success Undergraduate Recruitment and Enrollment University Structures and Organization February-April 2012: Campus department listening and dialogue sessions: Admissions and Enrollment Services Agricultural and Biosystems Animal Sciences Architecture Biology and Microbiology Chemistry IMPACT
