That ambitious goal is one of the reasons why Copenhagen has been awarded the title of European Green Capital Throughout the year we are sharing ideas, solutions and know how to make cities around the world even greener. COPENHAGEN SHARES IN 2014 As European Green Capital 2014, Copenhagen delivers a unique sharing platform through city networks, digital platforms, pan-european educational programmes, master classes and through partnerships with businesses and cities across Europe. EVENTS AND FESTIVITIES IN COPENHAGEN The Copenhagen diary for 2014 is packed with events and festivities marking that Copenhagen is the Green Capital of Europe.

2 2/2 FOTO: TROELS HEIEN MASTER CLASSES A large number of master classes will put focus on Copenhagen solutions and co-sharing with other cities. A bike master class together with Amsterdam, one on noise and air quality with Bristol and on resource efficiency together with Frankfurt. VISITING PROGRAMMES Visiting programmes for both professionals, citizens and tourists with focus on for example the city s unique sustainable solutions, design and architecture will take place all through CITY-NETWORK The 18 finalist cities for the European Green Capital Award 2014 will share ideas and solutions to common challenges during 2014 and beyond. COPENHAGEN THEMES The year is divided into five themes: The good urban life of the future, resources and sustainable lifestyle, the blue and green city, green mobility and climate and green transition. 3 // EUROPEAN GREEN CAPITAL /2 LET S SHARE CPH THE WORLD S MOST LIVABLE CITY The Copenhagen harbour is so clean that you can swim in it, cycling is the favored means of transport, and the city boasts large recreational areas. These together with the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2025 are some of the reasons why Copenhagen is European Green Capital 2014, and why the city has been rated continuously among the most livable cities in the world. Copenhagen is a growing metropolitan with an ambitious approach to urban planning. New sustainable city districts are on their way, and with the architecture to match. Planning a city for life and cycling now goes by the term Copenhagenization.

4 2/2 CONTACT Kristian Holmelund Jakobsen Frederikke Møller Kristiansen FACTS ABOUT COPENHAGEN Carbon neutral capital Copenhagen will be the world s first carbon neutral city by 2025 The climate changes has been placed high on the city s agenda since the millennium and in 2009 Copenhagen s Climate Plan 2015 was approved A 2015 goal of a 20% reduction in carbon emissions compared to 2005, was already achieved by 2011 World s best city for cyclists 36% of trips to and from work are done by bike The goal is that 50% cycle to work or education by 2015 Cycle super highways have been established passing through several municipalities Green and blue capital Today, 96% of Copenhageners are within 15 minutes walking distance of a larger green or blue area Copenhageners can swim and fish in the harbour in the heart of Copenhagen a result of an increase in the water quality through investment in the sewage system and the sewage treatment plants 20,000 old lighting fixtures will be replaced with energy efficient LED light sources Clean and healthy city Noise reducing asphalt has been laid during maintenance of roads with more than 2,000 cars per twenty-four hours and with a speed limit of a least 40km per hour It has been made mandatory for heavy, dieselpowered vehicles to drive with particle filters in the city Work is being done to extend the environmental zone and to improve infrastructure for electrical and hydrogen cars Copenhageners go organic 75% of public kitchens serve organic food By 2015 the goal is 90% organic food served in public kitchens The new Nordic kitchen uses seasonal, local and largely organic produce, and one in three Copenhageners buy organic food

Cleaner air, less noise and a greener city will give Copenhageners a better daily life, while investments will ensure jobs and the new solutions will create the foundation for a strong green sector. The goal is that Copenhagen will become a green growth laboratory, where companies from the whole world can develop, try out and showcase innovative green solutions.

7 // EUROPEAN GREEN CAPITAL /2 COPENHAGEN A CITY FOR LIFE LET S SHARE CARBON NEUTRAL BY 2025 Copenhagen will be the world s first carbon neutral city by 2025 and has just launched a new holistic climate plan. The climate changes has been placed high on the citys agenda since the millennium and in 2009 Copenhagen s Climate Plan 2015 was approved. The plan started up a large number of concrete initiatives including retrofitting of the municipality s own buildings, conversion of the city s combined heat and power plants to biomass and concrete plans for large, new, on shore wind turbines which will be constructed in Copenhagen in The 2015 goal of a 20% reduction in carbon emissions compared to 2005, was already achieved by WORLD S BEST CITY FOR CYCLING The numbers speak for themselves. 36% of Copenhageners cycle to work or education, and cycling is as much a part of Danish culture as smørrebrød open-faced sandwiches on rye bread. Cycling is quick and convenient and makes for healthy citizens and clean air. The goal is that by % of Copenhageners will cycle to work or education. People taking their bike instead of their car is both a question of tradition and careful urban planning where cycling infrastructure is central. More and broader bicycle lanes, cycle super highways going through several municipalities, and improved design of intersections have created one of the safest cities in the world for cyclists.

8 2/2 CREATING BUILDINGS FOR LIFE Copenhagen is both historic buildings and new world class architecture. As we work on the goal of becoming CO2-neutral, being energy conscious when we build and renovate is a natural mindset and a good investment. One of the most interesting projects is the establishment of a new city district, North Harbour, the largest urban development area in Northern Europe. With a sustainable energy supply, low-energy buildings, and some of the best conditions for cyclists in the world, North Harbour will be Copenhagen s sustainable city district and showcase for Smart City technology. COPENHAGENERS GO ORGANIC In the City of Copenhagen the consumption of organic food in the public kitchens has been increasing since 2000, and today 75% of the food served is organic. As part of the City of Copenhagen s vision to become an eco-metropolis by 2015, the City Council has set the target of 90% organic food in all public kitchens in the city by the end of The public kitchens, including both schools, day care, elderly homes, cultural institutions, schools and more, have implemented new ways of preparing meals for example by using produce from scratch, making use of all parts of an animal and using seasonal products this without increasing the cost of public meals. Using seasonal and local produce is the pivotal point of the new Nordic kitchen, which has become more and more popular not only in Denmark but around the world. Urban gardening is also gaining popularity among Copenhageners and several gardens on roof tops and in neighbourhoods are turning into green recreational areas.
