2 St. Barbara Parish, Brookfield Parish Life at St. Barbara Pentecost Vigil Some people may have never spent me in Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament. The ques on for some may be what does a person do? Perhaps the most important thing is to use the me for silent prayer and medita on before the presence of our Lord Jesus in the form of a consecrated host reposed in a special vessel known as a monstrance. During Adora on, a person can also use the me to pray the rosary, read the Bible or any other kind of religious material. St. Barbara Parish will be having Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament through the night during the vigil of Pentecost, June 7th. Hours will be from 6:00 p.m. Saturday to 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Pentecost Sunday, June 8th. During the evening, reconcilia on will be available from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. There also will be Praise and Worship music at 9:00 p.m. in church. Signup sheets are on the welcome table at the entrance of church. We need at least two people to be adorers for each me slot. We also need people to tend the fire. For more informa on, call Chicago Food Depository The missionary spirit team is planning St. Barbara s next service opportunity for Saturday, May 31st from 9:00 a.m. to noon. We will be heading to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, a nonprofit food distribu on and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. Volunteers may help repack bulk products to individual sizes, assemble boxes with assorted food, check expira on dates or label products. This is a great opportunity to spend a couple hours with St. Barbara friends while helping those struggling to put food on their tables. You must be at least 14 years old to par cipate in the service opportunity. There is space for 20 volunteers from St. Barbara. We will be planning to car pool for anyone interested. If you d like to sign up or have any ques ons contact the Missionary Spirit Team at missionaryspirit@stbarbarabrookfield.org or Noel at Page Two Vigilia de Pentecostés Alguna persona tal vez nunca ha pasado empo en la Adoración del Sacramento Bendecido. Para más información, llamar al Council of Catholic Women St. Barbara Council of Catholic Women will honor its living members with the celebra on of Mass on Sunday, June 8th, at 9:15 a.m. All CCW members are requested to a end to receive a blessing and acknowledge unity and support for our parish. 3 Sixth Sunday of Easter May 25, 2014 Page Three From the Pastor s Desk... Hopefully you have never had the need to hire a lawyer to defend you in a court case. If you have, however, then you know how much trust is required of you, as you depend on that person to serve as your advocate and to help you navigate your way through the complicated legal system. It is a scene repeated time and again in the movies and on T.V. shows. Upon being read his rights, the defendant declares to the authorities, I will not speak without my lawyer being present. The lawyer then appears on the scene and takes on the responsibility of providing wise counsel to the defendant, oftentimes providing a voice to those who feel voiceless. This is the image that Jesus gives to us regarding the Holy Spirit. Jesus promises to send us the Advocate, the Counsellor. The Holy Spirit will serve as our lawyer, providing voice to the voiceless, hope to the hopeless, and strength to the powerless. Our Advocate will help us to navigate our way through the many complications of life. St. Peter in the second reading this weekend exhorts us, Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear How is this possible? How can we defend our faith without being hurtful towards others and without becoming insensitive to the world around us? It is possible because our Advocate will offer us divine guidance and inspiration. As we face our daily trials, we trust that Jesus will provide us with the wise counsel of the Holy Spirit, so that, whether we find ourselves feeling acquitted or condemned in our life here on earth, we may know that God s Holy Advocate will defend us to the end of our days. With the Holy Spirit s guidance, we shall find our way to that Judgment Day that awaits us all, and hear the voice of Jesus declare the final verdict in our favor. Well done, good and faithful servant!... Come, you have my Father's blessing, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world." " (Mt 25: 21, 34).
