Financial statements are prepared, compared and analyzed with emphasis on using the statements. Analytical and decisionmaking abilities, communication skills and ethical considerations are also emphasized. 3 credit hours lecture. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Students will apply the rules of debit and credit in analyzing business transactions. 2. Students will demonstrate the ability to journalize business transitions. 3. Students will identify the correct placement of account balances on the financial statements. 4. Students will prepare a set of basic financial statements. REQUIRED MATERIALS: You will need to purchase the following materials for this course: 1. Accounting by Warren, Reeve, Duchac. 25 th Edition custom, loose-leaf (ISBN: ). 2. Printed Access code for CengageNOW (bundled for 2 semesters) (ISBN: ). NOTE: Items 1 and 2 are sold as a bundle (ISBN: ) in the MCC bookstore. You will not be able to return the books once the bundle has been opened. NOTE: These materials should be purchased through the bookstore authorized by your host college using the ISBN number listed above. Because these resources require special access codes, you may not be successful in purchasing books from generic book sites such as Amazon.com and others. You may also purchase the materials from the MCC Bookstore by calling MCC-THE1 or If you have any questions regarding these resources, please contact your instructor IMMEDIATELY as you will need these to complete the assigned work. MAKE-UP WORK AND EXAMS: There will be a mid-term exam and a final exam in this course. These exams will be proctored exams, which may be taken at any approved MSVCC proctor sites. The tests will be available only for a given time (see course outline for deadlines). There are no make-up exams. You should be sure to take the tests before the scheduled deadline. See below for more detail on tests. All homework and other assignments are given a definite deadline for completion. Work will not be accepted late for these assignments. You may work ahead, but you should not let yourself get behind. If you have any questions concerning the due date or availability of any homework or tests, please contact your instructor.

2 FINAL GRADE DETERMINATION: Mid-term Exam (35%) PROCTORED: The mid-term exam will cover chapters 1-4. Please refer to the course outline below for the due date. This exam will be made available at least two weeks prior to the deadline A test may be taken before the deadline, but tests cannot be made up once the deadline to take the test has passed. Students are expected to take tests within the assigned time. All tests will be accessed through CengageNOW at Final Exam (35%) PROCTORED: The final exam will cover chapters 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Children - No children will be allowed in the testing area or the lobby area of the Holladay Center for E-Learning **There will be some non-secure lockers in the lobby of the Holladay Center if the student wants to make use of them. Students may bring their own locks (or purchase a lock from the bookstore). The lock and contents must be removed at the end of the appointment. 3 Homework (25%): All homework must be submitted through CengageNOW, which is an online homework and testing tool. You should access CengageNOW through Canvas Modules. To register for CengageNOW, you must have the access code that came bundled with your textbook. See the separate handout on Getting Started Student Guide for CengageNOW. In order to receive full credit for homework assignments, you must complete the assignment by the due date and achieve a score of at least 75% on each assignment. If you do not score a 75% or greater on each assignment, you will be given the grade received. The homework exercises will be graded based on attempt of all assigned exercises through CengageNOW. In other words, if you attempt all exercises within the specified time (refer to course outline) and you receive a score of at least 75% on each exercise or problem, you will receive full credit for completing homework. Please note that you may attempt each exercise or problem multiple times in order to achieve at least 75%. All homework assignments must be completed and submitted before taking the test on the applicable materials. No homework will be accepted after the exam on the related chapters and no credit will be given for late work. Comprehensive Problem 1 (5%): Comprehensive Problem 1 can be found in your textbook on p at the end of chapter 4. You must complete this problem in CengageNOW using the online working papers. It may be helpful to print out the available spreadsheets and start the problem on your manual working papers first. Comprehensive Problem 1 integrates to concepts learned in chapters 1-4. This comprehensive problem covers the complete accounting cycle for Kelly Consulting for the month of April 2012, the second month of operation. The complete accounting cycle for the first month of operation is illustrated in the textbook on pages (objective 5). In order to receive full credit for this assignment, the student should attempt ALL parts of the assignment AND receive a 75% or greater on the assignment. The due date for this problem is listed below on the course outline and will be posted in CengageNOW. POLICY ON STUDENT DUE PROCESS PROCEDURES, DISCIPLINE, DRUG AND CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: All students are expected to read and understand the College s statement on student rights and responsibilities, discipline, drug use, and classroom behavior. These statements are found in the Meridian Community College Catalog and are also found in the Meridian Community College Student Handbook. STUDENT IDENTIFICATION POLICY: Students must display a current MCC ID card on his/her person at all times while on campus. ID cards are provided and validated by the Campus Police office, located on the first floor of Ivy Hall. The ID card must be worn on the person above the waist, which means it cannot be on a purse, book bag, etc. Individuals without an ID card in plain view will be stopped to verify their status as a student, staff, or authorized visitor. Displaying of the ID is also required for use of the MCC library and most other services and activities. Individuals who fail to display the identification card may be subject to sanctions and penalties including charges of trespassing and/or suspension from school. SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY: It is the policy of Meridian Community College, in keeping with efforts to establish an environment in which the dignity and worth of all members of the institutional community are respected, that sexual harassment of students and employees at Meridian Community College is unacceptable conduct and will not be tolerated. Any unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature is defined as sexual harassment. The College s sexual harassment policy and guidelines outlining procedures for filing a complaint are located in the Office of the Dean of Student Services. GRIEVANCE POLICY: A Student Grievance Process to provide students with a procedure to resolve grievances, complaints or concerns in an equitable, orderly and timely manner can be found in the on-line catalog or in the office of Mrs. Soraya Welden, Dean of Student Services. 5 ACADEMIC AFFAIRS ATTENDANCE POLICY: Meridian Community College believes strongly that the greatest single predictor of student success is attendance. Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled. NOTE on Distance Learning Classes: Attendance is still a requirement in the on-line environment. You must access the course site at least once a week to check for announcements, assignment changes, tests, etc. Meridian Community College instructors have the right to drop an excessively absent student from a class at any time during the semester. Excessive absenteeism in an on-line course means more than two weeks of inactivity in a semester. Inactivity may include failure to submit assignments timely, failure to complete scheduled exams and/or failure to access the course site within a specified time. If the instructor checks the course statistics and you have not accessed the site, nor have you made contact with the instructor, this may constitute a pattern of absenteeism. Additional information concerning attendance may be found in the current Meridian Community College Catalog. Please note that the last day to drop a course on the MSVCC is Friday, July 10. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: It is the student s responsibility to engage in actions that will assist in the successful completion of this course. Actions that will help a student s success in this class include, but are not limited to the following: reading and studying the assigned text, requesting additional help when needed, and completing all assignments on time! CONDUCT ON CAMPUS: MCC strives to preserve a learning environment on the campus which is free from disturbances and disruptions. Students are expected to exhibit self-reliant, acceptable and desirable behavior. The guiding principles to meet these expectations include respecting the rights of others, being truthful, not participating in unacceptable behavior, or violating federal, state and local laws and ordinances. The following code is applicable to any facility owned or operated by MCC. FINE IMPOSED UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR: The purpose of this section is to outline different situations and types of unacceptable behavior where a fine will be imposed. The following will be subject to a fine of $25 for the first offense, $50 for the second offense, $100 for the third offense and disciplinary action including, but not limited to, probation or suspension. 1. Public profanity, cursing or vulgarity 2. Smoking near any building entrance or smoking outside of designated smoking areas 3. Failure, refusal or inability to present a current MCC ID card upon request (must wear on visible location of one s person at all times when on College property) 4. Unauthorized entry to or use of College facilities 5. Unusually loud noise which creates a public disturbance including, but not limited to, shouting, use of portable radios, use of automobile radios, use of laptops or musical instruments TOBACCO POLICY: Meridian Community College has specific guidelines for the use of tobacco products on campus. MCC prohibits tobacco use inside any facility owned or operated by MCC. The use of tobacco products is limited to designated areas. See the campus map for the location of all designated tobacco usage areas. Smoking near any building entrance is prohibited. This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff and visitors. Refunds of fees are computed according to the date the student personally contacts the instructor, advisor, or records department to initiate the withdrawal process, not the last date of class attendance. Requests for exceptions because of extenuating circumstances must be submitted in writing to the Buisiness Office within 90 days after the end of the semester of withdrawal. Any exception to this policy must be approved by an administrative committee. The college will not refund fees originally paid by ch3heck until the check has successfully cleared the student s bank. WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURES It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw from any and all courses. The student should contact the instructor (in person, by phone or via ) to discuss the decision to withdraw. A student can request to be withdrawn from courses by completing the following steps: 1. Log on to Eaglenet and click on the My Student Services tab 2. Select the Registration tab 3. Select the Request to be Dropped from a Class link 4. Select the course or courses to be dropped 5. Select Update Drop Request The request must be submitted by the withdrawal deadline. Refer to the Academic Calendar in the online catalog at for withdrawal deadlines.
