Nubiotics THE COMPANY Nubiotics is a privately held company based in Morrinsville. We formulate and manufacture a range of nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products by harnessing the power of natural ingredients to provide products that nurture life. The healing power of many foods has been understood for centuries. In our drive to create fast acting pharmaceuticals we have largely forgotten about the healing power of natural products and food. Nutraceuticals are defined as Foods that you take on a daily basis that have a positive impact on an individuals health, physical performance or state of mind, in addition to their nutritive value (Israel Goldberg; Functional Foods; 1994). Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food. Hippocrates ( BC) stated Nubiotics markets a range of nutraceuticals and Cosmeceutical; Intestinal Health Product Range based on Colostrum Cosmeceutical Skin Care Range, based on Colostrum, milk lipids and active manuka honey Active Manuka Honey Range. 5 Nubiotics INFANT FORMULA RANGE Nubiotics has developed its own unique range of infant formulae for mothers who for one reason or another are unable to provide their infant with breast milk. We have incorporated key ingredients to address some of the unique components in a mothers breast milk to help the infant develop and grow. The best nutrition for babies is a mothers breast milk. It is not possible to imitate a mothers breast milk with a manufactured infant formula. The evidence is clear, that breast fed babies are more healthy and get a much better start in life than formula fed babies. We do the best we can with what component ingredients that we have. Nubiotics Limited, 2013 Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 5
Nubiotics Infant Formula Range Every newborn baby is totally dependent on its mother for all its nutrition and support. A mothers milk is very complex and provides all the nutrition an infant needs during its first year of life. Nubiotics Limited, 2013 Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 6
Nubiotics INFANT FORMULA RANGE World leading breakthrough bioactive ingredients. Nubiotics are one of only three companies worldwide to introduce a breakthrough ingredient containing a range of bioactive lipids which help to support the infant s immune system and protect the intestinal environment from pathogenic attack by bacteria that cause diarrhea. This is a major problem for all babies who are formula fed. Nubiotics Limited, 2013 Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 7
Nubiotics INFANT FORMULA RANGE A mothers breast milk is very complex and contains many unique compounds important to an infants development. 23 OPO In human breast milk 50% of the dietary calories are supplied to newborns as fat. More than 98% of this fat is in the form of triglycerides. The fatty acids which make up the major part of the triglycerides are very specific in which position they occupy in the triglyceride structure. Palmitic (C-16) fatty acid makes up about 17% of the total fatty acids in human milk and is found specifically on the middle position, unlike in cows milk where it is found on either of the outside positions. OPO is a unique triglyceride component that imitates the position of palmitic acid in the middle position of the triglyceride. As a result the following benefits occur; Reduces stool hardness and related parental concern Reduced calcium soap formation More calcium is available for adsorption. Increased Calcium adsorption Larger skeletal mineral deposition Reduced excretion of saturated fatty acids, mainly palmitic acid Nubiotics Limited, 2013 Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 23
Casein Phosphopeptide (CPP) Casein Phosphopeptide, CPP, is harvested and purified after the hydrolysis (digestion) of bovine milk casein. It is a bioactive peptide shown to enhance the adsorption of minerals from food and beverage products. It therefore improves the consumers overall uptake of important minerals such as Calcium. Casein Phosphopeptide Forms a complex with soluble calcium Maintains Calcium levels in the lower intestine for longer periods of time Facilitates increased adsorption of Calcium, in particular Nubiotics Limited, 2013 Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 24
Lutein, poly-fructose, GOS Lutein Lutein is an important compound in the functioning of the eye. It is found in high concentrations in the retina. It is not manufactured in the body and must be gained from food. Lutein is an important ingredient for addition to infant formulae for improved eye health and function. poly-fructose and GOS Galcto-oligosaccharide and poly-fructose are important prebiotics. They are essential in infant formulae for the development of healthy bacteria in the lower bowel. They promote the growth of good bacteria and enhance the release of the important short chain fatty acids which are easily adsorbed in to the body and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Both GOS and poly-fructose promote growth of essential bacteria in the bowel. An important function to aid the immune system function. Nubiotics Limited, 2013 Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 25
Milk Phospholipids Bovine milk phospholipids are purified from butter milk collected during the butter making process. Milk Phospholipids are found in high concentrations in the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). They are natural emulsifiers but have some important biological functions. They are found in high concentrations in human breast milk and are known to have a protective effect in the intestine of the infant. Important milk phospholipids are Sphingomyelin and the Gangliosides, GD 3 and GM 3. Sphingomyelin is important in the effective function of cellular walls. It contains long chain fatty acids and when broken down by enzymes in the epithelia (lining of the intestine) it is converted to ceramide (a special lipid made from Sphingomyelin) which acts as a lubricant and a water barrier to stop loss of water. GD3 is very high in early milk while GM3 levels do not become significant until about 35 days after birth of the baby. GD3 and GM3 deliver important sialic acid (a very special sugar which found in high concentration in brain and nerve tissue, important in the function of these organs) to the body for the development of brain and nerve tissue. Both Gangliosides are found in very high concentration in the brain. The Gangliosides GD3 and GM3 are important in the development of the intestinal microflora. They are responsible for the removal of pathogens such as E. coli from the intestine reducing the incidence of diarrhoea. A mothers body is programmed to produce different levels of these important gangliosides. The graph on the following slide indicates the changes of these compounds in a mothers breast milk. While we cannot imitate a mothers breast milk, we can now add a lot of the components found in human breast milk to help improve the efficacy of infant formulae for those mothers who are unable to breast feed Nubiotics their Limited, babies Harnessing Nature to Nurture Life 26
Glosssary Bioactive peptide, peptides are part of proteins and some have a role in the biochemical pathways in the body hence bioactive peptides Bovine milk casein, the two main classes of protein in milk are casein (the white proteins) and whey Calcium soap, the triglyceride is separated from the glycerol and combines with Calcium to form soap and is no longer available for nutrition. Epithelia. Lining of the intestine MFGM the membrane that surrounds the fat globule in the milk, contains high levels of phospholipids Palmitic (C16), one of the many fatty acids that bind to glycerol to make up fatty acids, in OPO it binds in the middle position of the 3 fatty acids Pathogenic bacteria- bacteria that are bad for the body and cause sickness and disease, and can kill, particularly babies and old people; examples are Salmonella, E coli, listeria Prebiotics compounds, ingredients that promote the growth of good bacteria in the intestine Sialic acid (a very special sugar which found in high concentration in brain and nerve tissue, important in the function of these organs Skeletal mineral deposition, more deposit of calcium to form strong bones Triglycerides, the individual fat molecules that make up fat, comprised of glycerol and 3 fatty acid molecules.
